    Description: Apoptosis is implicated in the generation and resolution of inflammation in response to bacterial pathogens. All bacterial pathogens produce lipoproteins (BLPs), which trigger the innate immune response. BLPs were found to induce apoptosis in THP-1 monocytic cells through human Toll-like receptor-2 (hTLR2). BLPs also initiated apoptosis in an epithelial cell line transfected with hTLR2. In addition, BLPs stimulated nuclear factor-kappaB, a transcriptional activator of multiple host defense genes, and activated the respiratory burst through hTLR2.     Description: The epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs) are products of cytochrome P450 epoxygenases that have vasodilatory properties similar to that of endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor. The cytochrome P450 isoform CYP2J2 was cloned and identified as a potential source of EETs in human endothelial cells. Physiological concentrations of EETs or overexpression of CYP2J2 decreased cytokine-induced endothelial cell adhesion molecule expression, and EETs prevented leukocyte adhesion to the vascular wall by a mechanism involving inhibition of transcription factor NF-kappaB and IkappaB kinase.     Description: The generation of cell-mediated immunity against many infectious pathogens involves the production of interleukin-12 (IL-12), a key signal of the innate immune system. Yet, for many pathogens, the molecules that induce IL-12 production by macrophages and the mechanisms by which they do so remain undefined. Here it is shown that microbial lipoproteins are potent stimulators of IL-12 production by human macrophages, and that induction is mediated by Toll-like receptors (TLRs). Several lipoproteins stimulated TLR-dependent transcription of inducible nitric oxide synthase and the production of nitric oxide, a powerful microbicidal pathway.     Description: The leukocyte-specific adapter molecule SLP-76 (Src homology 2 domain-containing leukocyte protein of 76 kilodaltons) is rapidly phosphorylated on tyrosine residues after receptor ligation in several hematopoietically derived cell types. Mice made deficient for SLP-76 expression contained no peripheral T cells as a result of an early block in thymopoiesis. Macrophage and natural killer cell compartments were intact in SLP-76-deficient mice, despite SLP-76 expression in these lineages in wild-type mice.     Notes: Envelope instability is investigated in a storage ring using particle simulation. A typical distortion pattern of the instability is observed in transverse phase planes of cold ion beams considering the storage ring both with and without ring periodicity perturbations. The dependence of the blow-up rate of the instability on the single particle phase advance of the storage ring is calculated. Typical e-folding blow-up times of the envelope instability increase from 10−5 s to 10−2 s when the single particle phase advance is smaller than 90°. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A high precision mirror for measuring the storage ring beam size is under fabrication for the APS diagnostics beamline. The mirror, which will be located at 12.9 meters from the bending magnet source, is required to maintain less than 1.6 microradian slope error. The mirror design consists of a slot in the center in order to reduce incident power from the 300-mA, 7-GeV beam during normal operation. Water channels with fins are machined in the GlidCop mirror body to protect it against extremely high heat loads under accidental beam deviations. The mechanical design of the mirror, and results from a thermal analysis are presented in this paper. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We designed, created, and tested a device for measuring electron bunch length in the picosecond region. The basic idea behind the method is a circular scanning of the electron bunch in the rotating magnetic field of a TM110 rf cavity. As a result, the longitudinal position of the electrons is transformed into an angular position in a plane orthogonal to the axis. The resolution limit of the instrument is 4 ps (rms). © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present development of microfocusing Kirkpatrick–Baez mirrors GeoSoilEnviroCARS. The mirror is made of single-crystal silicon and the desired elliptical shape is formed by elastic bending with a two-parameter bender. We present data from long trace profiler measurements of the bent shape, which verifies the design principle, and motivates a new bender design. We tested the re-engineered mirror bender focusing white radiation from a National Synchrotron Light Source bending magnet, achieving a 2.5 μm focus with a gain (using only one mirror) of 91. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
