    Notes: Abstract Fresh whole leaves and solvent–water leaf extracts of the hedgerow plant panax, Polyscias guilfoylei (Bull), were tested for their attractiveness to male and female Oriental fruit flies, Bactrocera dorsalis, in laboratory flight tunnel and cage olfactometer bioassays. Fresh mature whole panax leaves were found to be attractive to mated female oriental fruit flies in the flight tunnel. Response of males and virgin females was low and in most instances not significantly different from controls. Attraction of mated female flies to the layers resulting from a methylene chloride–water partition or a hexane–water partition of freshly ground leaves using small McPhail traps was greatest in the methylene chloride fraction. When methylene chloride and water layers were tested competitively in a multiple-choice rotating olfactometer, the methylene chloride fraction was more attractive. Tests involving the methylene chloride–water interface (an emulsion of the two partitioned layers) with and without a standard attractant NuLure, showed the emulsion layer to be significantly more attractive than the other fractions or NuLure. In outdoor cage olfactometer assays of methylene chloride and water fractions, activity was greatest in the methylene chloride fraction. The results suggests that volatile semiochemicals from this nonhost plant are attractive to mated female Oriental fruit flies. The results are discussed in relation to the chemical ecology of B. dorsalis and the potential use of this nonhost plant for detection and control of female Oriental fruit flies in the field.

    Notes: High quality nanoscale, phase-pure hexagonal gallium nitride (GaN) crystallites have been synthesized by the thermal induced detonation of molecular precursors of the type (R3N)Ga(N3)3 (R=CH3, C2H5, etc.). The method allows the control of the particle size regime from 2 to about 1000 nm. X-ray diffraction and Rietveld simulations revealed an anisotropic platelet-like shape of the particles. The obtained GaN material was as well characterized by transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction, photoluminescence spectroscopy, SEM, IR, RAMAN, thermal gas effusion/mass spectrometry, thermal analysis, elemental analysis. Gas absorption measurements (BET method) showed a specific surface area of about 90 m2 · g-1. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: The mechanisms of wear in ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) acetabular cups were investigated on both laboratory simulator-tested cups and a clinically retrieved component. Two different levels of wear process were identified: one characterized by the formation and detachment of platelet-like flakes from initial machining marks, and the other by the formation of fine ripples and fibrils by repeated passes of microscopic asperities on the femoral head. Both wear processes could be described by a criterion of critical plastic strain. A theoretical model was developed to account for the generation of the microscopic wear particles based on such a critical strain criterion. Its predictions of the dependence of the UHMWPE wear rate on surface roughness and applied load were in excellent agreement with previously published experimental correlations. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Permittivity ∊′ and dielectric loss ∊″ of novolac have been determined in the temperature interval from  - 150 to 150°C and in the frequency interval from 102.5 to 106 Hz. Novolac exhibits a main and a secondary relaxation process. For the main relaxation a master curve of ∊″ was calculated, the shape of which was described by the Havriliak - Negami function (HN). The parameters of the HN fit were interpreted by a model that relates the values to the polymer structure. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the dielectric relaxation times was analyzed by a WLF approach for the main relaxation and an Arrhenius approach for the secondary relaxation. The dielectric relaxation times of the main relaxation were correlated with the electrical conductivity and the melt viscosity.

    Description: Entry into anaphase and exit from mitosis depend on a ubiquitin-protein ligase complex called the anaphase-promoting complex (APC) or cyclosome. At least 12 different subunits were detected in the purified particle from budding yeast, including the previously identified proteins Apc1p, Cdc16p, Cdc23p, Cdc26p, and Cdc27p. Five additional subunits purified in low nanogram amounts were identified by tandem mass spectrometric sequencing. Apc2p, Apc5p, and the RING-finger protein Apc11p are conserved from yeast to humans.     Description: In response to specific ligands, various STAT proteins (signal transducers and activators of transcription) are phosphorylated on tyrosine by Jak protein kinases and translocated to the nucleus to direct gene transcription. Selection of a STAT at the interferon gamma receptor as well as specific STAT dimer formation depended on the presence of particular SH2 groups (phosphotyrosine-binding domains), whereas the amino acid sequence surrounding the phosphorylated tyrosine on the STAT could vary.     Description: A nonlinear, time-dependent, ideal MHD code has been developed and used to compute the flow induced by nonlinear Alfven waves propagating in an isothermal, stratified, plane-parallel atmosphere. The code is based on characteristic equations solved in a Lagrangian frame and is highly accurate. Results show that resonance behavior of Alfven waves exists in the presence of a continuous density gradient and that the waves with periods corresponding to resonant peaks exert considerably more force on the medium than off-resonance periods; this leads to enhanced flow. If only off-peak periods are considered, the relationship between the wave period and induced longitudinal velocity shows that short period WKB waves push more on the background medium than longer period, non-WKB, waves. The results also show the development of the longitudinal waves produced by the finite amplitude of the Alfven waves. The longitudinal wave becomes strong as the Alfven wave relative amplitude grows above 10 percent and will lead to strong damping of the Alfven waves.

    Description: A careful analysis of a 6-hour time sequence of vector magnetograms of AR 6659, observed on 1991 June 10 with the MSFC vector magnetograph, has revealed only minor changes in the vector magnetic field azimuths in the vicinity of two M-class flares, and the association of these changes with the flares is not unambiguous. In this paper we present our analysis of the data which includes comparison of vector magnetograms prior to and during the flares, calculation of distributions of the rms variation of the azimuth at each pixel in the field of view of the active region, and examination of the variation with time of the azimuths at every pixel covered by the main flare emissions as observed with the H-alpha telescope coaligned with the vector magnetograph. We also present results of an analysis of evolutionary changes in the azimuth over the field of view of the active region.

    Description: Estimates of solar normal mode frequencies from helioseismic observations can be improved by using Multitaper Spectral Analysis (MTSA) to estimate spectra from the time series, then using wavelet denoising of the log spectra. MTSA leads to a power spectrum estimate with reduced variance and better leakage properties than the conventional periodogram. Under the assumption of stationarity and mild regularity conditions, the log multitaper spectrum has a statistical distribution that is approximately Gaussian, so wavelet denoising is asymptotically an optimal method to reduce the noise in the estimated spectra. We find that a single m-upsilon spectrum benefits greatly from MTSA followed by wavelet denoising, and that wavelet denoising by itself can be used to improve m-averaged spectra. We compare estimates using two different 5-taper estimates (Stepian and sine tapers) and the periodogram estimate, for GONG time series at selected angular degrees l. We compare those three spectra with and without wavelet-denoising, both visually, and in terms of the mode parameters estimated from the pre-processed spectra using the GONG peak-fitting algorithm. The two multitaper estimates give equivalent results. The number of modes fitted well by the GONG algorithm is 20% to 60% larger (depending on l and the temporal frequency) when applied to the multitaper estimates than when applied to the periodogram. The estimated mode parameters (frequency, amplitude and width) are comparable for the three power spectrum estimates, except for modes with very small mode widths (a few frequency bins), where the multitaper spectra broadened the modest compared with the periodogram. We tested the influence of the number of tapers used and found that narrow modes at low n values are broadened to the extent that they can no longer be fit if the number of tapers is too large. For helioseismic time series of this length and temporal resolution, the optimal number of tapers is less than 10.
