    Notes: Abstract The crystal and molecular structure of a series of 3,7-bis(arylazo)-1,3,5,7-tetraazabicyclo[3.3.1] nonanes (1a–d) have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. All four compounds have the same feature, that the tetraazabicyclononane unit assumes a cage-like structure with the aryltriazene moieties lying parallel to one another so that the aryl rings are held together by π – π stacking. Crystal data: 1a C17H18N10O4, triclinic, space group P − 1, a = 9.8899(10), b = 13.0845(13), c = 16.458(2) Å, α = 94.095(2)°, β = 107.004(2)°, γ = 111.027(2)°, V = 1863.5(3) Å3 and Z = 4; 1b, C19H18F6N8, orthorhombic, space group Pbca, a = 15.3210(8), b = 10.9512(6), c = 24.5698(13) Å, V = 4122.4(4) Å3 and Z = 8; 1c C19H18N10, monoclinic, space group P21/n a = 6.3742(6), b = 13.7343(13), c = 21.542(2)Å, β = 97.738(2)°, V = 1868.8(3) Å3, and Z = 4; 1d, C19H18N10, monoclinic, space group P21/c, a = 18.205(2), b = 17.398(2), c = 12.784(12) Å, β = 109.480(2)°, V = 3818.0(6) Å3, and Z = 8.

Notes: Abstract 2-Benzoylpyridine N4-methyl-N4-phenylthiosemicarbazone, HBz4MePh, monoclinic,P2(1)/n a=9.141(2),b=18.507(4),c=11.401(2) Å, β=110.58(3)o,V=1805.6(9) Å3,Z=4, μ=1.655 mm−1. HBz4MePh crystallizes in a hydrogen bonded Z isomeric conformation with respect to the C7−N2 bond. The intramolecular hydrogen bond is between N3−H...N1, and the S atom isZ to the azomethine nitrogne, N2.

Notes: Abstract. During recent years parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) research has been focused on the physiological functions of different fragments of the PTHrP molecule. Here we demonstrate that PTHrP (1–37) induced cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) response in primary human osteoblast-like cells, which were well characterized by the presence of alkaline phosphatase activity and osteocalcin production after stimulation with 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3. However, there was no cAMP response to PTHrP (58–77). Furthermore, the response to PTHrP (1–37) was dose dependent, with a significant increase at 1 nM. The presence of PTHrP (1–37)-induced cAMP response in human osteoblast-like cells implies that aminoterminal PTHrP fragments may exert important functions in the bone.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes the construction of categorical models for thenu-calculus, a language that combines higher-order functions with dynamically creatednames. Names are created with local scope, they can be compared with each other and passed around through function application, but that is all. The intent behind this language is to examine one aspect of the imperative character of Standard ML: the use of local state by dynamic creation of references. The nu-calculus is equivalent to a certain fragment of ML, omitting side effects, exceptions, datatypes and recursion. Even without all these features, the interaction of name creation with higher-order functions can be complex and subtle; it is particularly difficult to characterise theobservable behaviour of expressions. Categorical monads, in the style of Moggi, are used to build denotational models for the nu-calculus. An intermediate stage is the use of a computational metalanguage, which distinguishes in the type system between values and computations. The general requirements for a categorical model are presented, and two specific examples described in detail. These provide a sound denotational semantics for the nu-calculus, and can be used to reason about observable equivalence in the language. In particular a model using logical relations is fully abstract for first-order expressions.

Notes: Abstract Fractal and multifractal techniques have been applied to various types of solar data to study the fractal properties of sunspots as well as the distribution of photospheric magnetic fields and the role of random motions on the solar surface in this distribution. Other research includes the investigation of changes in the fractal dimension as an indicator for solar flares. Here we evaluate the efficacy of two methods for determining the fractal dimension of an image data set: the Differential Box Counting scheme and a new method, the Jaenisch scheme. To determine the sensitivity of the techniques to changes in image complexity, various types of constructed images are analyzed. In addition, we apply this method to solar magnetogram data from Marshall Space Flight Center's vector magnetograph.

    Topics: Biology
Notes: Abstract The new species Penicillium discolor, frequently isolated from nuts, vegetables and cheese is described. It is characterised by rough, dark green conidia, synnemateous growth on malt agar and the production of the secondary metabolites chaetoglobosins A, B and C, palitantin, cyclopenin, cyclopenol, cyclopeptin, dehydrocyclopeptin, viridicatin and viridicatol. It also produces the mouldy smelling compounds geosmin and 2-methyl-isoborneol, and a series of specific orange to red pigments on yeast extract sucrose agar, hence the epithet discolor. P. discolor resembles P. echinulatum morphologically but on basis of the secondary metabolites is also related to P. expansum, P. solitum and P. crustosum.

Notes: Abstract  The gene (vgb) encoding the hemoglobin (VtHb) of Vitreoscilla sp. was cloned into a broad-host-range vector and stably transformed into Pseudomonas putida, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Xanthomonas maltophilia. vgb was stably maintained and expressed in functional form in all three species. When growth of the P. aeruginosa and X. maltophilia transformants in Luria-Bertani medium was compared with that of each corresponding untransformed strain, the VtHb-producing strains reached slightly higher maximum viable cell numbers, had significantly increased viability after extended times in culture, and, like E. coli that produces VtHb, had significantly lower respiration rates. The VtHb-producing strain of P. putida also reached a slightly higher maximum viable cell number than its corresponding untransformed strain, but was significantly less viable after extended times in culture and, unlike the case in E. coli, had a generally higher respiration rate than the untransformed strain. When growth was monitored by absorbance, the results were similar to those obtained with viable cell counts.
