    Notes: Abstract— In this investigation the Electron Channelling Contrast (ECC) technique in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was applied to reveal the dislocation structures in the vicinity of surface fatigue cracks in comparison to those of cyclically-deformed recrystallized polycrystalline copper. The plastic zone around a fatigue crack was found to consist of an innermost region containing cells, followed by a region containing dense veins and PSBs, surrounded by a structure of loose veins, bundles and loop patches typical of the cyclically deformed matrix. A relation between plastic strain amplitude values deduced from cyclic stress-strain investigations and the dislocation structures near fatigue cracks are given. Typical regions of damage accumulation were identified and plastic strain contours for surface fatigue cracks established. The essentially non-destructive ECC technique is particularly suited to identify the changes in mesoscopic dislocation structures from surface layers to the interior of specimens over large specimen areas.

    Notes: This paper examines how companies can achieve competitive advantage by fitting their business strategies to the way in which new technology implementation is managed. In particular, the inter-relationship between strategy, technology and performance is examined. Five strategic types and seven types of technological objectives were used to find combinations which were associated with high performance. It was found that companies pursuing a prospector strategy (a strategy based on product innovation) combined with technological objectives emphasizing marketing, image and technical development were the highest performing group of companies. The lowest performing companies were those where strategy was dominated by price competition.The general conclusion of the paper is that, in order to achieve competitive advantage, companies need to see technology objectives as an inherent part of strategy. The study was carried out on a sample of twenty companies within the polymer processing industry, but the findings should be applicable to companies in other industries, and particularly to smaller companies.

    Notes: Abstract— A number of fretting fatigue tests were carried out on CMV steel and INCO 718 alloys under closely controlled experimental conditions. A fracture mechanics-based lifing model was developed and the Paris Law employed to predict fatigue lives under a range of experimental conditions. An effective initial flaw size was used to describe initiation and early propagation of cracks. This approach was found to give good predictions of fatigue life of specimens for different values of bulk stress under the same fretting load.

    Notes: Abstract— Forged components of ferritic steel can be protected by a welded austenitic stainless steel clad. Intergranular cracking can take place in the ferritic phase close to the ferritic austenitic interface. After developing a technique for fabrication of these cracks, the formation conditions are studied. Auger electron spectroscopy investigations of specimens containing a real crack opened inside the vacuum chamber are used for interpretation. Sulphur segregations embrittle the grain boundaries which are cracked by residual and thermal stresses during the postweld heat treatment.

    Notes: Abstract A study was completed on irradiated and unirradiated (offcut) material from Pickering Nuclear Generating Station (NGS) A Unit 3 pressure tubes which were fabricated from ingots of 100% recycled material (quadruple-vacuum-arc-melted). The toughness of the material is shown to be generally higher than that of previous material fabricated from 〈 100% recycled material (double-vacuum-arc-melted). Fractographic and microstructural studies demonstrate that variations in toughness of the low chlorine (〈 1 ppm) material are predominantly due to preferential void nucleation at particles, in particular aligned zirconium phosphides. In the absence of such particles, very high toughness levels can be maintained after irradiation.

    Notes: Abstract An experimental investigation into the growth and closure behaviour of small corner cracks has been conducted on a low carbon steel (ASTM A516 Grade 70). This ferritic/pearlitic steel has been chosen to investigate the complexities of small crack behaviour in the dual phase material. Innovative procedures are used for compliance measurement and opening load determination. The closure and growth behaviour of the small corner cracks are presented in terms of shape and size. The results are divided into two stages, the first pertaining to the “stationary crack”, and the second dealing with the crack as it grows. The cracks are shown to exhibit an irregular growth rate, which is in part, shown to correspond with microstructural features of the material. In the short crack regime, the linear fracture mechanics parameter, ΔK does not correlate with the data and the use of a ΔKeff based on the effective applied load provided little improvement.

    Notes: This article examines the pricing of rental contracts for two types of renter households: those who are able to amass a large, up-front security deposit and those with little, or no, security to offer. Empirical tests are presented to suggest that, in dealing with renter households who have little, or no, security to offer, landlords earn at a similar rate of return as lenders who make riskier loans at a high interest rate to borrowers of dubious credit. The analysis suggests that this situation occurs in large part because of the problem of asymmetric information and moral hazard between landlords and renter households regarding the latter's use of the premises.

    Notes: Manufacturing firms have given management of the natural environment higher priority as public awareness and scrutiny has increased. To help understand management's role in this process, a basic conceptual model of environmental management within operations is developed. The model proposes that the general orientation of operations managers on environmental issues ranges from proactive to reactive, and this is intrinsically related to the investment pattern in environmental technologies. Results from an empirical validation of this model are presented for a sample of plants from the furniture industry. Three distinct groups were identified based on the linkage between environmental management orientation and investment in environmental technologies. Counter to the prescriptive environmental literature, which recommends that proactive orientation should emphasize pollution prevention (i.e., fundamental product and process changes), proactive managers implemented a balanced portfolio that also included a sizable proportion of pollution control technologies (i.e., traditional end-of-pipe controls and remediation). Contextual factors also differentiate among these three groups, thus suggesting options for senior management to assist plant managers to become more proactive and to improve environmental performance.
