    Notes: Abstract Field trials were carried out to study the fate of15N-labelled urea applied to summer maize and winter wheat in loess soils in Shaanxi Province, north-west China. In the maize experiment, nitrogen was applied at rates of 0 or 210 kg N ha−1, either as a surface application, mixed uniformly with the top 0.15 m of soil, or placed in holes 0.1 m deep adjacent to each plant and then covered with soil. In the wheat experiment, nitrogen was applied at rates of 0, 75 or 150 kg N ha−1, either to the surface, or incorporated by mixing with the top 0.15 m, or placed in a band at 0.15 m depth. Measurements were made of crop N uptake, residual fertilizer N and soil mineral N. The total above-ground dry matter yield of maize varied between 7.6 and 11.9 t ha−1. The crop recovery of fertilizer N following point placement was 25% of that applied, which was higher than that from the surface application (18%) or incorporation by mixing (18%). The total grain yield of wheat varied between 4.3 and 4.7 t ha−1. In the surface applications, the recovery of fertilizer-derived nitrogen (25%) was considerably lower than that from the mixing treatments and banded placements (33 and 36%). The fertilizer N application rate had a significant effect on grain and total dry matter yield, as well as on total N uptake and grain N contents. The main mechanism for loss of N appeared to be by ammonia volatilization, rather than leaching. High mineral N concentrations remained in the soil at harvest, following both crops, demonstrating a potential for significant reductions in N application rates without associated loss in yield.

    Notes: Abstract The phytotoxicity of culture filtrates of Fusarium solani f. sp. glycines, the fungus causing sudden death syndrome (SDS) of soybean (Glycine max), was tested with a viability stain of soybean suspension-cultured cells and a stem cutting assay of soybean seedlings. Suspension-cultured cells from a SDS-susceptible soybean cultivar were exposed to cell-free culture filtrates of F. solani f. sp. glycines or other F. solani isolates for 2, 4, 6, and 8 days and then stained with 0.1% phenosafranin. The percentage of dead soybean suspension-cultured cells was greater (P〈0.001) with filtrates prepared from F. solani f. sp. glycines than from other F. solani isolates, and dead cells increased over time and with higher concentrations of culture filtrate. Cuttings of soybean seedlings with their stems immersed in culture filtrates of F. solani f. sp. glycines isolates developed SDS-like foliar symptoms, but not when immersed in filtrates of other isolates. There was a positive correlation (r=0.94, P〈0.001) between soybean foliar symptom severity and percentage of stained soybean suspension-cultured cells. Both methods were used to determine the phytotoxicity of fungal culture filtrates.

    Notes: Abstract. It is documented that alkaline phosphatase (AP) plays an important role in bone mineralization. Considering that TN-AP is expressed in periodontal ligament fibroblasts, renal epithelial cells, and vascular endothelial cells, and that TN-AP is both a calcium-/phosphate-binding protein and a phosphohydrolytic enzyme, we hypothesize that membrane-bound AP also plays an important role in the initiation of physiological and pathological mineralizations in tissues other than bone and cartilage. To test this hypothesis, nonosteoblast cell lines, including a fibroblast line, a renal epithelial line, and a capillary endothelial line, were stably transfected to express high levels of rat bone AP on their cell surfaces. These rat bone AP-expressing cells were then cultured on filter membranes in the presence or absence of β-glycerol phosphate. von Kossa staining for calcium phosphate and transmission electron microscopy with electron diffraction analysis for minerals were employed to investigate the effect of membrane AP on extracellular calcium phosphate mineralization. Our results indicated that AP expression on these nonosteoblast-like cell surfaces have induced extracellular hydroxyapatite (HAP) mineralization. Our findings support the concept that membrane-bound AP contributes to extracellular apatitic mineralization by mechanisms that do not necessarily involve its hydrolase activity. They also suggest that AP might be important for the initiation of pathological mineralization in nonosteogenic tissues.

    Notes: Abstract.  Positron annihilation spectroscopy has been applied to measure the free-volume hole distribution in poly(ether urethane) as a function of temperature. The hole radius distribution determined from orthopositronium lifetime distribution is found to shift to a larger values with increasing temperature. This result, combined with the variation of ionic conductivity, suggests that carrier ions do not migrate naked but are bound to polymer segments through ion-dipole interaction forces, and the ion migration is controlled primarily by segmental motion of the polymer.

The films exhibit a step-like morphology and they are properly oriented along the (0 0 1) direction. Their normal-state resistivity measured along the tilt (off-axis (1 0 0) direction of the substrate) was, typically, 260 times higher than that along the (0 1 0) direction. Such films reveal a transverse Seebeck-effect which significantly exceeds that observed with YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO).

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, a new partition of unity – the synchronized reproducing kernel (SRK) interpolant – is derived. It is a class of meshless shape functions that exhibit synchronized convergence phenomenon: the convergence rate of the interpolation error of the higher order derivatives of the shape function can be tuned to be that of the shape function itself. This newly designed synchronized reproducing kernel interpolant is constructed as an series expansion of a scaling function kernel and the associated wavelet functions. These wavelet functions are constructed in a reproducing procedure, simultaneously with the scaling function kernel, by directly enforcing certain orders of vanishing moment conditions. To the authors knowledge, this unique interpolant is the first of its kind to be constructed, and to be used in numerical computations, both in concept and in practice. The new interpolants are in fact a group of special hierarchial meshless bases, and similar counterparts may exist in spline interpolation method, other meshless methods, Galerkin-wavelet method, as well as the finite element method. A detailed account of the subject is presented, and the mathematical principle behind the construction procedure is further elaborated. Another important discovery of this study is that the 1st order wavelet together with the scaling function kernel can be used as a weighting function in Petrov-Galerkin procedures to provide a stable numerical computation in some pathological problems. Benchmark problems in advection-diffusion problems, and Stokes flow problem are solved by using the synchronized reproducing kernel interpolant as the weighting function. Reasonably good results have been obtained. This may open the door for designing well behaved Galerkin procedures for numerical computations in various constrained media.
