    Notes: The free-radical copolymerization of donor, acceptor and neutral monomers to ternary copolymers is studied. It is shown that the composition of the ternary copolymers can be calculated from their monomer feed, in case the reactivity ratio (r) values of the three binary subsystems are known. The calculation based on the copolymer equation only considers really existing propagation steps.

    Notes: The influence of the solvent on the reactivity ratios in free-radical copolymerization of donor monomers with acceptor monomers is very strong. The copolymerization reactivity ratios decrease with increasing donor number and dielectric constant of the solvent. This can be rationalized on the basis of the complex stability constant of the two monomers as compared with those of the monomers and the solvent.

    Notes: Anomeric O-hetarylation of tetra-O-benzyl- and tetra-O-acetylglucose (1a, b) can be directly performed with electron-deficient heteroaromatic/heterocyclic systems 2-14, which contain imide halide moieties. The reactions were carried out in the presence of a base and led, through an exchange of the halide by the glucopyranosyloxy moiety, to the products 2a-14a, 7b-14b. Predominantly or exclusively β-products were obtained. Systems bearing more than one imide halide moiety, such as cyanuric fluoride (15) or 5-chloro-2,4,6-trifluoropyrimidine (16), can be employed for successive anomeric O-hetarylations. Investigation of the glycosyl donor properties of O-glucosyl heteroaromatic imidates with 6-O- and 4-O-unprotected glucose derivatives 18 and 19 as acceptors and comparison of the results obtained with data for the corresponding β-trichloroacetimidates 17aβ and 17bβ, reveals that 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoropyridin-4-yl glucopyranosides 14aβ and 14bβ exhibit similar properties. For specific tasks, for instance α-glucopyranoside formation, 14aβ may even be advantageous.

    Notes: New fluorescent polymers for electroluminescent devices were synthesized and characterized. In order to obtain polymers for blue light emitting diodes (LEDs), two different structural concepts based on isolation of the active chromophore units within the polymer main chain were investigated. In the first approach non-coplanar units were used to reduce the conjugation length in poly(arylenevinylene)s. In a second approach copolymers having isolated chromophore units in the polymers main chain were investigated. For this purpose, copolyesters containing isolated 1,2-dinaphthylethene chromophore units were synthesized and characterized. The influence of the chemical structure on the photo- and electroluminescence is discussed. On the example of copolyester 2b, which shows bluegreen electroluminescence (λmax = 497 nm) in a LED configuration, it was demonstrated that these polyesters can be used as light emitting layer in electrooptical devices.

    Notes: A comprehensive analysis of the differences between the genomes of two closely related bacterial strains should give insight into the molecular basis of their individual phenotypic and genotypic characteristics. Here we present an integrative approach including two different strategies for the thorough investigation of genomic divergence. We have combined two techniques including genomic subtractive hybridization and comparative genome mapping by pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) techniques. The subtractive method for which a protocol is given herein results in the production of a library of specific DNA sequence tags present only in one strain, while the construction of macrorestriction maps of the bacterial chromosomes yields data about the overall genome organization and the arrangement and distance of gene loci. Comparison of the physical and genetic maps and determination of the map positions of the strain-specific DNA sequences reveals gross chromosomal modifications, insertions or deletions of additional genetic material, and transpositional events. The further investigation of the strain-specific regions yields information about the nature and origin of the acquired DNA and their influence on the evolution of the individual bacterial genome. The two methods were applied to differential genome analysis of clonal divergence in Pseudomonas aeruginosa choosing two clone C isolates from diverse habitats.
