    Notes: Summary Strain identification in Zea mays by restriction fragment length polymorphism should be feasible due to the high degree of polymorphism found at many loci. The polymorphism in maize is apparently higher than that currently known for any other organism. Five randomly selected maize inbred lines were examined by Southern filter hybridization with probes of cloned low copy sequences. Typically, several alleles could be distinguished among the inbred lines with any one probe and an appropriately selected restriction enzyme. Despite considerable polymorphism at the DNA level, 16 RFLP markers in three inbred lines of maize were examined for six to 11 generations and found be stable. Mapping of RFLP markers in maize can be accelerated by the use of B-A translocation stocks, which enable localization of a marker to chromosome arm in one generation. The use of recombinant inbred lines in further refinement of the map is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The local chromatin structure of the Shrunken-1 (Sh) gene of maize was probed by analyzing DNase I hypersensitivity. Sh encodes the gene for sucrose synthetase, a major starch biosynthetic enzyme, which is maximally expressed in the endosperm during seed maturation. In addition to general DNase I sensitivity, specific DNase I hypersensitive sites were identified in endosperm chromatin that mapped near the 5′ end of the Sh gene. The pattern of hypersensitive sites and their relative sensitivity were altered in other non-dormant tissues that produce little or no enzyme. However, some changes in chromatin structure appear to be independent of Sh gene expression and may reflect general alterations associated with plant development. The chromatin structure of several sh mutations, induced by Ds controlling element insertions, was also analyzed. Although the insertions perturbed expression of the gene, there were no notable effects on local chromatin structure.

    Notes: Abstract This paper gives a unified analysis of the effects of multipath dispersion and Doppler spreading due to fast fading in OFDM systems, deriving simple closed-form expressions for intersymbol and interchannel interference in the most important cases. It shows also why sine wave carriers are in general the optimum bearers for the sub-channels. The expressions for interference are used to estimate the BER performance of coded OFDM, showing that the use of forward error correction (FEC) coding and a guard period are both essential for optimum performance. As an example it is shown that a 64 sub- channel OFDM system can achieve a data rate of 6.4 Mbit/s on a typical urban mobile radio channel.

    Notes: Abstract. The subject of this paper is a characterization of the $\Sigma_1$ -definable set functions of Kripke-Platek set theory with infinity and a uniform version of axiom of choice: $KP\omega+(uniform\;AC)$ . This class of functions is shown to coincide with the collection of set functionals of type 1 primitive recursive in a given choice functional and $x\mapsto\omega$ . This goal is achieved by a Gödel Dialectica-style functional interpretation of $KP\omega+(uniform\;AC)$ and a computability proof for the involved functionals.

    Notes: Summary  Continuum Damage Mechanics has been applied successfully to technical problems since the idea was introduced by Kachanov almost 40 years ago. In keeping with the traditions of mechanics, the formulation was based on the results of mechanical tests on specimens whose size is measured in centimeters. To model the observations which describe the deterioration of material properties it was found necessary to introduce internal variables referred to as ‘damage’. The approach is phenomenological, with only a minimal attempt to provide a physical interpretation of damage. For this reason the approach has had little appeal to those whose interest is in the physical mechanisms which cause material deterioration. In this presentation a description is given of attempts to develop continuum damage mechanics so that the relationship with the physical mechanism approach is less abrupt. The procedure is illustrated with reference to ceramic matrix composites.

In this paper we report the results of cloning a 10-kb segment of genomic DNA which includes the region flanking the 5′ end of the spiny dogfish CPSase III gene. A total of 1,295 base pairs of sequence straddling the start codon was obtained. Primer extension experiments revealed that the transcription start site is the G located 114 residues upstream of the translation start codon ATG. The first exon has 240 base pairs, including the 5′ untranslated region, the coding sequence for the signal peptide (38 amino acids), and the four N-terminal amino acids of the mature enzyme. The boundary of the first exon and the first intron of the CPSase III gene is concordant with that of rat and frog (Rana catesbeiana) CPSase I, which have been suggested to have evolved from CPSase III. The putative TATA box sequence, TACAAA, is located at position −31 with an uncommonly found C at the third position. Two C/EBP binding site sequences, ATTCTGCAAG (−405 to −397) and GTGCAGTAAG (−168 to −160), were identified in the promoter region, which suggests that spiny dogfish CPSase III might be subjected to transactivation of transcription by C/EBP-related proteins, as has been reported for rat CPSase I. The preparation and binding of a recombinant RcC/EBP-1 protein (theR. catesbeiana homolog of the mammalian C/EBPα) to the two spiny dogfish C/EBP binding sequences are described. Two putative heatshock binding elements were also identified in the promoter region.

    Notes: Abstract A survey was conducted to determine the distribution and determinants of environmental and blood lead levels near a conventional and several cottage lead smelters and to assess the relationship between environmental and blood lead levels in a tropical, developing-country setting. Fifty-eight households were studied in the Red Pond community, the site of the established smelter and several backyard smelters, and 21 households were studied in the adjacent, upwind Ebony Vale community in Saint Catherine Parish, Jamaica. Households were investigated, using questionnaires, soil and housedust lead measurements, and blood lead (PbB) measurements from 372 residents. Soil lead levels in Red Pond exceeded 500 parts per million (ppm) at 24% of households (maximum-18,600 ppm), compared to 0% in Ebony Vale (maximum 150 ppm). Geometric mean PbB in Red Pond, where 44% of children 〈6 years of age had PbB levels ≥ 25 micrograms per deciliter (μg/dL), was more than twice that Ebony Vale in all age groups (p 〈 0.0005). Within Red Pond, proximity to backyard smelters and to the conventional smelter were independent predictors of soil lead (p 〈 0.05). Soil lead was the strongest predictor of PbB among Red Pond subjects under 12 years of age. The blood lead-soil lead relationship in children differed from that reported in developed countries; blood lead levels were higher than expected for the household-specific soil lead levels that were observed. These data indicate that cottage lead smelters, like conventional ones, are a hazard for nearby residents and that children exposed to lead contamination in tropical, developing countries may be at higher risk for developing elevated blood lead levels than similarly-exposed children in developed countries.
