    Description: The Indian Ocean Experiment (INDOEX) was an international, multiplatform field campaign to measure long-range transport of air pollution from South and Southeast Asia toward the Indian Ocean during the dry monsoon season in January to March 1999. Surprisingly high pollution levels were observed over the entire northern Indian Ocean toward the Intertropical Convergence Zone at about 6 degrees S. We show that agricultural burning and especially biofuel use enhance carbon monoxide concentrations. Fossil fuel combustion and biomass burning cause a high aerosol loading.     Description: The Mediterranean Intensive Oxidant Study, performed in the summer of 2001, uncovered air pollution layers from the surface to an altitude of 15 kilometers. In the boundary layer, air pollution standards are exceeded throughout the region, caused by West and East European pollution from the north. Aerosol particles also reduce solar radiation penetration to the surface, which can suppress precipitation. In the middle troposphere, Asian and to a lesser extent North American pollution is transported from the west.     Description: It is commonly believed that fine texture soils developed on carbonateparent material are well buffered from possible acidification. There areno data, however, documenting resistance of such soils to acidicdeposition exposure on a time scale longer than 30-40 years.In this paper we employed a rare opportunity of directly testinglong-term buffering capacity of 19th century forest soils developedon calcareous silt loam. A comparison of chemical analysis of archivedsoils with modern soils collected from the same locations ~100 yearslater indicate varying degrees of acidification of forest soils in taiga andthe forest steppe regions. Reforestation and increases in precipitationcontributed to acidification, as well as acidic deposition. The acidificationof forest soil was detected through decreases in soil pH, and changesin concentrations of exchangeable calcium and aluminum, whichcorresponded with changes in communities of soil microfauna. Althoughacidification was found at all 3 locations that were analyzed, the trendsin soil chemistry were greatest where the highest loading of acidicdeposition had taken place.

    Notes: Architecture at the Maya archaeological site of Uxmal in Yucatan, Mexico has been documented since the 17th century by historians, archaeologists, illustrators, photographers, and most recently photogrammetrists. This paper reviews the work of the major contributors to recording of architecture at Uxmal with a particular focus on the 19th century stereophotography of Alice and Augustus Le Plongeon who worked to record all the standing architecture at Uxmal, and the close range stereophotogrammetric projects that recorded the Adivino Pyramid during the late 20th century.

    Notes: It is believed that atomic-scale surface steps cause defects in single-crystal films grown heteroepitaxially on SiC substrates. A method is described whereby surface steps can be grown out of existence on arrays of device-size mesas on commercial "on-axis" SiC wafers. Step-free mesas with dimensions up to 200 μm square have been produced on 4H-SiC wafers and up to 50 μm square on a 6H-SiC wafer. A limiting factor in scaling up the size and yield of the step-free mesas is the density of screw dislocations in the SiC wafers. The fundamental significance of this work is that it demonstrates that two-dimensional nucleation of SiC can be suppressed while carrying out step-flow growth on (0001)SiC. The application of this method should enable the realization of improved heteroepitaxially-grown SiC and GaN device structures. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The functional causes of life history trade-offs have been a topic of interest to evolutionary biologists for over six decades. Our review of life history trade-offs discusses conceptual issues associated with physiological aspects of trade-offs, and it describes recent advances on this topic. We focus on studies of four model systems: wing polymorphic insects, Drosophila, lizards, and birds. The most significant recent advances have been: (a) incorporation of genetics in physiological studies of trade-offs, (b) integration of investigations of nutrient input with nutrient allocation, (c) development of more sophisticated models of resource acquisition and allocation, (d) a shift to more integrated, multidisciplinary studies of intraspecific trade-offs, and (e) the first detailed investigations of the endocrine regulation of life history trade-offs.

    Notes: Abstract There is ample clinical evidence, as well as evidence from animal experiments, that Mycobacterium tuberculosis can persist in tissues for months to decades without replicating, yet with the ability to resume growth and activate disease. Our knowledge of both macrophage physiology and the nature of tuberculous lesions in man and animals suggests that hypoxia is a major factor in inducing nonreplicating persistence (NRP) of tubercle bacilli. In vitro models reinforce this conclusion and provide insights into mechanisms that make NRP possible. There is evidence from in vitro models that the strategies employed by the bacilli to permit hypoxic NRP include restriction of biosynthetic activity to conserve energy, induction of alternative energy pathways, and stabilization of essential cell components to lessen the need for repair or replacement.

    Notes: Abstract We develop the general theory for a new functor K e on the category of C *-algebras. The extremal K-set, K e (A), of a C *-algebra A is defined by means of homotopy classes of extreme partial isometries. It contains K 1 (A) and admits a partially defined addition extending the addition in K 1 (A), so that we have an action of K 1 (A) on K e (A). We show how this functor relates to K 0 and K 1, and how it can be used as a carrier of information relating the various K-groups of ideals and quotients of A. The extremal K-set is then used to extend the classical theory of index for Fredholm and semi-Fredholm operators.

    Notes: Abstract The paper reviews and presents attributes of emerging polymer-ceramic composite electrolytes for lithium rechargeable batteries. The electrochemical data of a diverse range of composite electrolytes reveal that the incorporation of a ceramic component in a polymer matrix leads to enhanced conductivity, increased lithium transport number, and improved electrode-electrolyte interfacial stability. The conductivity enhancement depends upon the weight fraction of the ceramic phase, annealing parameters, nature of polymer-ceramic system, and temperature. The ceramic additive also increases the effective glass transition temperature and thus decouples structural and electrical relaxation modes which in turn increases the lithium transport number. The ceramic additives also provide a range of free energy of reactions with lithium. A few of the ceramic materials (MgO, CaO, Si3N4) have positive free energy of reaction and they should not passivate lithium electrodes.
