Notes: In this paper the instructional method, case-based modeling, is presented and examined in practice. The model is built upon concepts and theories of constructivism and experiential learning. It represents an arrangement of instructional tasks and as the tasks are completed in an ordered sequence they help individuals learn how to shape and practice general and routine management skills. Case situations used with team research, study and practice provide the bases for skill identification and continuous improvement. The case-based modeling approach may be adapted to many different topics or business disciplines in which decision situations can be embedded in case material. The instructional approach and a brief study of its influences are demonstrated in this paper.

Notes: In the strategic management literature mission statements are said to be an inseparable part of corporate strategy. It has been argued that they have an impact on the performance of the organization, yet the evidence is unclear. This study is an investigation into the relationship between the financial success of hospitality enterprises and their mission statements. Mission statements of 30 top hospitality enterprises were evaluated. This sample is of significance as it represents some of the largest corporations, and about 200 of the largest brands in the hospitality industry. The mission statements were scored and these scores were tested for correlation with three financial performance indicators. The results indicated that while there was a statistically significant correlation between the mission statements and the annual turnover, there was no significant correlation with the net profit margin or the return on equity. The article concludes by considering how firms may improve their performance by better managing their mission statements.

Notes: Globalisation is one of the key economic, political, social and technological drivers of our age. Concurrently, outsourcing worldwide has topped US$1tn per annum.2 In the future, the strategic management of corporate real estate (CRE) will no longer be viewed in isolation from these trends, as the ethics of corporate governance demand that multinational companies view their property assets from the same global vantage point as any other factor of production. This paper looks at the compelling drivers towards an international approach to CRE management, the benefits of leveraging value across borders and key solutions to the apparent paradox of global consistency and cultural diversity. It draws on outsourcing research in other markets, pinpoints trends and directions and uses case study examples in order to propose a new holistic approach to strategic property management.

Notes: The overall performance of an electronic nose system will depend on the individual performance of its constituent elements. Although often overlooked, it is clear that careful design/selection of the front-end signal conditioning circuit is of critical importance if optimal performance of the odour sensing system is to be achieved. In this paper circuits are reviewed, which have been employed as front-end signal conditioners for resistance-based sensors in electronic nose systems, with many of the conclusions drawn being equally applicable to other resistor sensors. The relevant equations governing the behaviour of each circuit methodology are derived and advantages and disadvantages are discussed. The performance of the circuit is then quantitatively assessed in a specific test case, in which the maximum sensitivity of the circuit is calculated in relation to the task of interfacing to a theoretical thin-film conducting-polymer sensor.

Notes: This paper reports on an attempt to compare three distinct approaches to simulating the operations of a small enterprise in order to evaluate the appropriateness and effectiveness of each approach in modelling the enterprise and provide a means for improving its operational performance. The approaches considered are visual, interactive simulation using the WITNESS simulator, SIMNET II, a network-driven simulation language and queuing modelling using Operations Management Expert. Each approach was found to accurately model the company operations, provide a consistent indication of operational performance in terms of throughput and resource utilisation, and provide a basis for suggesting improved modes of operation.

Notes: This paper reviews the range of sensors used in electronic nose (e-nose) systems to date. It outlines the operating principles and fabrication methods of each sensor type as well as the applications in which the different sensors have been utilised. It also outlines the advantages and disadvantages of each sensor for application in a cost-effective low-power handheld e-nose system.

Notes: This paper discusses the digital hardware and software that is required for data acquisition in a portable electronic nose (e-nose) system. A review of current e-nose systems is presented highlighting the methods employed by these systems to acquire the data from the sensor head.

Notes: Information models for the representation of product data are being developed as an international standard. However, the current application protocols focus on the representation of homogeneous objects only. This paper suggests an information model to represent heterogeneous objects using the information modeling methodology developed for ISO 10303. The data planning model is then extended to represent the two-dimensional (2D) slice information using concepts from ISO 10303. The proposed formats are validated by physical realization of objects on two LM machines. This information model will help in providing a uniform base in the development of heterogeneous solid modeling systems. It will also equip the solid modeler with the ability to integrate with other applications and process planning in the domain of layered manufacturing.

Notes: Using the example of CJD in the UK, this article shows that the intensity of press coverage of this public health story is unrelated to actual deaths. Yet press coverage seems to have had a (negative) impact on the sales of meat. The perceived trustworthiness of sources of information on such health related topics are explored. The implications and opportunities for stakeholders including government and industry are considered.

Notes: This paper provides an empirical illustration of the potential of a cross-supply chain information system (CSCIS) in an automotive industry setting. Whilst dramatic reductions in downstream finished goods, work-in-progress and raw materials inventories have taken place in many automotive supply chains, this paper looks at how demand information can be made more transparent in order to improve the efficiency of upstream operations. The paper concentrates on the findings from a case study that used a prototype Internet-based system to convert original equipment manufacturer (OEM) demand into second and third-tier component requirements. A computer-based value analysis illustrates how this information might be used to significantly improve supply chain synchronisation in the lower tiers. The research demonstrates how information systems can be used to improve supply chain performance and provides further motivation for the development of more holistic supply chain planning information systems.
