Abstract: This book focuses on respiratory proteins, the broad hemoglobin family, as well as the molluscan and arachnid hemocyanins (and their multifunctional roles). Featuring 20 chapters addressing invertebrate and vertebrate respiratory proteins, lipoproteins and other body fluid proteins, and drawing on the editors’ extensive research in the field, it is a valuable addition to the Subcellular Biochemistry book series. The book covers a wide range of topics, including lipoprotein structure and lipid transport; diverse annelid, crustacean and insect defense proteins; and insect and vertebrate immune complexes. It also discusses a number of other proteins, such as the hemerythrins; serum albumin; serum amyloid A; von Willebrand factor and its interaction with factor VIII; and C-reactive protein. Given its scope, the book appeals to biologists, biomedical scientists and clinicians, as well as advanced undergraduates and postgraduates in these disciplines. Available as a printed book and also as an e-book and e-chapters, the fascinating material included is easily accessible.

Abstract: This book covers the latest findings of a wide variety of viral, prokaryotic and eukaryotic macromolecular protein complexes and builds upon the solid macromolecular foundations established by previous volumes of the Subcellular Biochemistry series. Thus, an almost encyclopaedic coverage of the broad field of protein complex structure and function has been established. The 17 interesting chapters included in this book have been organised into four sections: Soluble Protein Complexes, Membrane Protein Complexes, Fibrous Protein Complexes and Viral Protein Complexes. Significant topics present here are: Fatty Acid Synthase, the Fork Protection Complex, Ribonucleotide Reductase, the Kinetochore, G proteins, the FtsEX Complex, the Kainate Receptor, the Photosystem I-antenna, the Mycobacterial Arabinofuranosyltransferases, the the Bacterial Flagellum, the Actomyosin Complex, Motile Cilia, SLS Collagen Polymorphic Structures, and the Reovirus Capsid and Polymerase. Up-dates/expansion of chapter topics present in earlier volumes are now included in chapters here, e.g., those on Ferritin-like proteins and the Multi-tRNA Synthetase. The book is richly illustrated throughout, which is the result of an impressive integration of structural data from X-ray crystallography with that from cryo-electron microscopy. Functional aspects of protein-protein interactions are also given a high priority.

Abstract: This book provides an up-to-date overview of key areas of ageing research and bridges the gap between the subcellular events and the reality of ageing as seen in clinical practice. To this end, the reader learns about the historical development and progression of clinical ageing research. All chapters address the biochemistry or cell biology of various ageing events (to the extent that the data are available) and work their way to the clinical understanding we have of ageing. The focus of this volume is on how dietary restriction, virus infection and chronic inflammation affect the ageing process. Additionally, this book discusses how phosphate metabolism and metabolic dysfunction contribute to ageing events and how various organs and tissues (e.g. tendons, ears, heart muscle, and the endocrine system) age. This book follows on from Parts I, II and III of Biochemistry and Cell Biology of Ageing within the Subcellular Biochemistry book series and aims to bring the subcellular and clinical areas into closer contact by including interesting and significant biomedical ageing topics that were not included in the earlier volumes. Comprehensive and cutting-edge, this book is a valuable resource for experienced researchers and early career scientist alike, who are interested in learning more about the fascinating and challenging question of why and how our cells age.

Abstract: Virus-infected Cells is a comprehensive and technical exploration of the intricate interactions between viruses and host cells. This book delves into the molecular and cellular aspects of viral infections, providing a wealth of knowledge about various viruses and their effects on cellular mechanisms. The first part of the book covers general/technical aspects, introducing the reader to the field of virology and providing an overview of the techniques used to study virus-infected cells. It covers topics such as the visualisation of virus-infected cells by cryo-electron tomography and the assessment of necroptosis, a type of programmed cell death, in virus-infected cells. In addition, the book explores the role of apoptosis and phagocytosis as antiviral mechanisms, as well as the intricate process of viral membrane fusion and penetration. It also discusses the tracking of viral entry into living cells and the use of correlative cryo-imaging to study the biology of viruses in cells and tissues. Finally, the book examines the cytopathic effect induced by viruses, shedding light on the damage caused to infected cells. The second section of the book explores specific viruses and their interactions with host cells. Each chapter focuses on a specific virus and provides an in-depth look at its behaviour within infected cells. The book covers a wide range of viruses, including human papillomavirus, respiratory syncytial virus, Japanese encephalitis virus, African swine fever virus, coronavirus, influenza A virus and human endogenous retroviruses. Each chapter examines unique aspects of virus-host interactions, such as viral assembly, impact on the cytoskeleton, critical host-virus interactions mediated by viral RNA, mechanisms of cell entry, and the involvement of cholesterol in virus budding and scission. This volume in the Subcellular Biochemistry series is a valuable resource for researchers, virologists and students interested in understanding the complex dynamics between viruses and the cells they infect. With its detailed exploration of general and specific aspects of virus-host interactions, this book provides a comprehensive understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in viral infections.

Description: This comprises supplementary data from "Expression of Millennial-Scale Antarctic Warming Events in the Southern Ocean." and represents 14 sediment records from the Southern Ocean, 30°S - 60°S. These records have had their age models recalibrated and tied to EDC dD on the AICC2012 timescale to facilitate comparison across basins, and in order to create SST stacks for the Atlantic-Indian, Pacific, and Southern Oceans.

Description: This dataset includes radiocarbon, d18O, winter sea ice concentration (wSIC), and summer sea surface temperature (sSST) estimates for marine sediment core TAN1302-96 (59.09°S, 157.05°E, water depth 3099 m), and recalculated wSIC and sSST estimates for SO136-111 (56.66°S, 160.23°E, water depth 3912 m). TAN1302-96: The 364 cm core was collected in March 2013 using a gravity corer during the return of the RV Tangaroa from the Mertz Polynya in Eastern Antarctica. The core is situated in the western Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean, on the southwestern side of the Macquarie Ridge. The radiocarbon and d18O data were used to construct the TAN1302-96 age model, which suggests the core extends back to at least 140 ka, covering a full glacial-interglacial cycle. Diatoms were sampled every 3-4 cm throughout the core, and wSIC and sSST estimates were produced using the Modern Analogue Technique (MAT). Both LOG and CHORD MAT outputs are included within this dataset. SO136-111: The 680 cm core was collected from the Emerald Basin in the East Indian sector of the Southern Ocean, south of the modern Antarctic Polar Front. The age model was constructed using a combination of radiocarbon and d18O stratigraphy, which show the core extends back to 290 ka. Diatoms were sampled every 2-5 cm throughout the core, and wSIC and sSST estimates were produced using the MAT. Both LOG and CHORD MAT outputs are included in the dataset. For original SO136-111 data, see Crosta et al., (2004).
