Notes: Charge exchange spectroscopy is one of the key ion diagnostics on the DIII-D tokamak. It allows measurement of impurity densities, toroidal and poloidal rotation speeds, ion temperatures, and the radial electric field. For the 2000 experimental campaign, we have replaced the intensified photodiode array detectors on the edge portion of the system with advanced charge-coupled device (CCD) detectors mounted on faster (f/4.7) Czerny–Turner spectrometers equipped with toroidal mirrors. The combination has improved the photoelectron signal level by about a factor of 20 and the signal to noise by a factor of 2–8, depending on the absolute signal level and readout mode. A major portion of the signal level improvement comes from the improved quantum efficiency of the back-illuminated, thinned CCD detector (70% to 85% quantum efficiency for the CCD versus 10% for the image intensifier) with the remainder coming from the faster spectrometer. The CCD camera also allows shorter minimum integration times: 0.33 ms while archiving to computer memory and 0.15 ms using temporary storage on the CCD chip. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report giant, nonlinear optical rectification in asymmetric quantum wells weakly coupled by an intermediate potential barrier. This phenomenon originates from (i) macroscopic displacements (30 nm) of carriers during optical transitions and (ii) large storage times of excited electrons because of a slow transfer mechanism between the wells (≈6 ps at 77 K). The resulting rectification coefficient is 1.62×10−3 m/V per well, more than six orders of magnitude higher than in bulk GaAs. These structures really behave as giant "quasimolecules'' optimized for infrared optical nonlinearities and their use may be envisioned for a new class of infrared detectors.

Notes: We report direct observations of all-optical mirrorless bistability associated with saturable absorption in three kinds of bacteriorhodopsin (BR) samples: wild-type BR in water solution and dispersed in thin films of a polymer matrix as well as water solution of the genetically engineered mutant BRD96N. The experiments are carried out with picosecond pulses at 532 nm. The values measured for the saturation intensity are explained in terms of the relaxation of the excited M state population to the B state of the BR photocycle for the three kinds of samples studied.

Notes: Abstract Molecular expression cloning techniques have revealed that patients with chronic Chagas' heart disease (cChHD) present a strong humoral response against the cloned C-terminal portions of the four Trypanosoma cruzi ribosomal P proteins TcP1, TcP2α (TcP2b), TcP2β (TcPJL5), and TcP0. This protein family presents several features that may be important in the immunopathology of Chagas disease. Their exposed location on the ribosome, and the amplification of their parasite-specific, Ser free C-terminal domain, generate a strong anti-parasite P response that may induce anti-P autoimmunity. Evidences indicate that the serological pattern of the anti-P response from chagasic patients may be the consequence of a chronic immunization with T. cruzi ribosomal antigens.

Notes: Abstract The influence of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphate source, along with concentration, was determined for effect on the weight average molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, and yield of pullulan produced byAureobasidium pullulans NRRL-Y 6220. Batch systems, scale-up batch, and continuous fermentations of 1 L and 10 L were also evaluated as were processing variables, including solvents, and extraction conditions. Products with weight average molecular weight from 1.0 × 105 to 4.0 × 106 were produced in 100-g quantities by varying fermentation conditions such as constituents of the culture medium, pH, and length of incubation. Three sets of culture conditions were defined for the formation of low (〈5.0×105), medium (1.0–2.0×106), and high (〉2.0×106) weight average molecular weight polymer. These defined molecular weight fractions of pullulan were used in further studies in producing films and fibers.

Notes: Abstract Current Navy signal processing requirements range from tens of millions to hundreds of millions of multiply-add operations per second. It is expected that these requirements will increase tenfold within the next ten years. To accommodate these expanding requirements, the Navy is building the Signal Processor (AN/UYS-2). The AN/UYS-2 design is driven by the fact that it is the Navy standard signal processor. Being a stantard, it must satisfy more requirements than just high throughput. It must be programmable, modular, expandable, flexible supportable, reliable and provide this capability for the next 20 years to support existing and future users. In order to make it programmable (and therefore reduce the total life cycle ownership cost), the AN/UYS-2 utilizes a Navy developed signal processing graph language methodology called PGM. The implementation of PGM on AN/UYS-2, provides the AN/UYS-2 user with a convenient and cost effective way of specifying the signal proccessing algorithms to be executed for a given application. The AN/UYS-2 desgin approach is to implement PGM and to develop a modular, multiprocessor that could meet a wide range of air, sea, and shore signal processing applications. In order to meet this requirement, a hybrid control-flow/data-flow architecture was chosen to enable evolutionary technology infusion. VLSI component technology is required to implement the primary processing engine in the architecture. The AN/UYS-2 architecture consists of a variable combination of multiple types of Functional Elements (FEs), a data transfer network, a control bus, and a built-in-test (BIT) control bus. This paper provides a review of AN/UYS-2 basic design and growth potential.

Notes: Abstract Hydroponic and rhizotron studies were conducted to determine the effect of V on soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] and bush bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) biomass and mineral nutrition. In the hydroponic study, 6 mg V L−1 (as VOSO4) in the nutrient solution drastically altered soybean nutrition, and significantly reduced plant biomass. Vanadium accumulated in the roots but not in the aerial portions of the plants. The data support the hypothesis that tissue V and Ca contents are related with high concentrations of both elements in the roots, and low concentrations in the aerial portions of the plant. Analysis of data with the Diagnostic and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS) identified Ca as deficient in aerial tissues. The changes in Ca concentrations induced by V treatment may also have antagonized the concentrations of others macronutrients, most notably K and Mg. DRIS also indicated that K, Mg, and Zn levels were relatively high. The rhizotron study, which dealt with bush beans grown in metal-treated soils, further showed that V was primarily concentrated in the roots of the plants, with very little accumulated in the aerial portions.

Notes: Abstract Some results are given involving the controllability of a nonlinear evolution equation of the formx′(t)+A(t,u(t))x(t)=B(t)u(t). The underlying space is a real Banach space with uniformly convex dual space. A method involving ranges of sums of two nonlinear operators is employed along with the Leray-Schauder degree theory to establish sufficient conditions for controllability. A result is also given characterizing a type of reachable sets of certain evolutions. Finally, the lack of exact controllability is shown for quite a large class of nonlinear evolutions with compact perturbationsB(t). The responses are actually straight-line segments emanating from the origin. However, several results herein can be extended to cover a variety of control problems with other known types of responses.
