Notes: A falling head permeameter is described in which pairs of infrared emitters and detectors on a sight tube are used to measure the flow rate associated with the passage of water through a granular solid under the action of a diminishing pressure head. An equation relating pressure head to elapsed time is derived from which permeability may be calculated. In order to verify the accuracy and sensitivity of the instrument, permeability measurements carried out on a graded quartz sand are compared to those obtained by the more conventional constant head measurement. Excellent agreement is obtained between the permeability values obtained using both measurement methods. Experimental results are also reported for the measurement of the permeability of a range of sieved sand fractions. The falling head permeameter described here is particularly suitable for the measurement of the hydraulic conductivity of granular solids such as sands and soils through which a high flow rate may be expected. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have investigated the effect of ion modification of multilayer growth and ion etching of multilayer interfaces on perpendicular anisotropy and giant magnetoresistance in sputter deposited Co/Pt and Co/Cu multilayers. These two properties are thought to be particularly sensitive to the form of the interface profile in multilayers. We find that the ion-assisted deposition conditions used degrade both perpendicular anisotropy and GMR through interface smoothing and mixing. In contrast, thermal annealing and first experiments in ion etching show that GMR can be increased by smoothing of the Co/Cu interfaces.

Notes: Photoluminescence excitation (PLE) measurements allow one to obtain direct information on the absorption processes in porous Si leading to the strong visible luminescence which has recently been reported. This technique does not need a free-standing porous Si sample, but the effect of layer thickness should be included in the interpretation of PLE data. In our PLE spectra, two separate absorption edges are observed and the initial one shifts to higher energies with storage time. The trends of these changes are consistent with the quantum wire model.

Notes: Isolates of Erwinia herbicola, obtained from flowers and leaves of hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), were screened as potential control agents of fire blight disease (caused by Erwinia amylovora) using an immature pear fruit assay. Selected isolates were subsequently tested for disease control by infection of hawthorn blossom in the laboratory, and by shoot infection of hawthorn plants grown under controlled (glasshouse) and fluctuating (polythene tunnel) environmental conditions.Although the immature pear fruit assay provided a general screen for the selection of antagonists for the control of both blossom and shoot blight, it had two major limitations when quantitatively applied. Firstly there were inconsistencies in the relative effects of different isolates on the pear-slice surface, with some isolates being more suppressive than the standard antagonist Eh252 in the first screening and less in the second. Secondly the assay was not able to predict accurately the level of control in the intact plant-as no correlation occurred between the level of control in the pear fruit assay and the percentage control of either blossom blight or shoot blight. Two isolates of E. herbicola, WL9 and WL40, reduced both blossom- and shoot-blight. WL9 provided over 80% control of blossom blight, equivalent to that provided by chemical agents, and also gave total control of shoot blight when applied at a WL9: pathogen ratio of 10:1.

Notes: Returning adult salmon caught at the mouth of the River Dee, Aberdeenshire, were transferred to tanks in the laboratory. For fish placed in fresh water, sea lice remained attached for up to 6 days, though most lice were lost in the first 48 hours. Few lice were lost from salmon maintained in sea water. The experiments were conducted in water within a temperature range of 12·8 to 16° C, equivalent to summer river temperatures in the Aberdeenshire Dee.

Notes: The contamination of dental unit water lines (DUWL) is an emerging concern in dentistry. The aim of this study was to use an in vitro DUWL to model microbial contamination and evaluate the decontamination efficacy of tetraacetylethylenediamine (TAED) solutions. A DUWL biofilm model used to simulate clinical conditions was used to generate a range of biofilms in DUWL. Three distinct biofilms were generated: (1) biofilm from water, (2) biofilm from a mix of water + contaminating human commensal bacteria, (3) biofilm from water with contaminating oral bacteria added after biofilm formed. The contaminating oral species used were Streptococcus oralis, Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus. Decontamination by simple water flushing or flushing with TAED was evaluated (2, 5 and 10 min intervals). The DUWL tubes were split and samples were plated onto a range of media, incubated and bacteria enumerated. Water flushing did not reduce the number of microorganisms detected. Bacteria were not detected from any of the TAED sampling points for any of the biofilm types tested. Interestingly, if contamination was introduced to new DUWL along with the waterborne species a biofilm was formed containing only the waterborne species. If however, an existing biofilm was present before the introduction of “contaminating” bacteria then these could be detected in the biofilm. This implies that if the DUWL are new or satisfactorily cleaned on a regular basis then the associated cross-contamination aspects are reduced. In conclusion, TAED provides effective control for DUWL biofilms.

Notes: A heavy chain variable region cDNA sequence of the channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) prototypical for a new VH family (approximately 20 or more members) is presented. The nucleotide and inferred amino acid sequences differ by 32–52% and 41–68%, respectively, from those for the already described catfish VH families.

Notes: Abstract Surface-associated material (SAM) from Porphyromonas gingivalis was tested for in vitro biological activities that may be relevant to the pathogenesis of chronic periodontitis. SAM was found to stimulate bone resorption at a concentration of 1.0 μg/ml and this was inhibited by indomethacin, interleukin-1 receptor antagonist protein and anti-tumour necrosis factor antibody. At a concentration of 10 ng/ml, the SAM inhibited DNA and collagen synthesis in osteoblasts and murine calvaria and DNA synthesis in fibroblasts, monocytes and epidermal cells. Therefore, easily solubilised surface components from P. gingivalis could play a role in the pathogenesis of chronic periodontitis if these activities operate in vivo.
