Notes: Abstract Two new N-glycosidase type-1 ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPs), denoted petroglaucin 1 and petrograndin, respectively, were isolated from the plantsPetrocoptis glaucifolia (Lag.) Boiss sp.viscosa (Rothm.) Laínz andPetrocoptis grandiflora Rothm. These new RIPs do not share H2N-terminal amino-acid sequence homology with petroglaucin (now denoted as petroglaucin 2), the only other type-1 RIP to be isolated fromP. glaucifolia (Arias et al. (1992) Planta186, 532–540). Petroglaucin 1 shares amino-acid sequence homology with RIPs from Cucurbitaceae while petroglaucin 2 and petrograndin do so with saporins and dianthin 30 (Caryophyllaceae). The new RIPs strongly inhibited protein synthesis at subnanomolar concentrations in rabbit reticulocyte lysates and other eukaryotic cell-free systems, but they were inactive on bacterial ribosomes.

Notes: Abstract Petrocoptis glaucifolia, a paleoendemic member of the Caryophyllaceae from the North of Spain, was found to contain at least five proteins that inhibit protein synthesis in a rabbit reticulocyte lysate. One of them, for which the name petroglaucin is proposed, was purified to apparent electrophoretic homogeneity by chromatography through S-Sepharose Fast Flow, Sephadex G-75 and CM-Sepharose Fast Flow. The apparent Mr of the preparation was 27500. This protein does not contain appreciable glycan chains and displays 45.8% of NH2-terminal amino-acid sequence homology with some ribosome-inactivating proteins from Saponaria officinalis, another member of the Caryophyllaceae. Petroglaucin shows the following functional properties: (i) it strongly inhibits the rabbit-reticulocyte-lysate system and Vicia sativa cell-free extracts, both coded by endogenous messengers, and also inhibits poly(U)-directed polyphenylalanine synthesis by Vicia sativa cell-free extracts and purified rat-liver ribosomes; (ii) it shows much less inhibitory capacity in wheat-germ, Cucumis sativus and rat-liver cell-free systems coded by endogenous messengers; (iii) the inhibitory effects on purified rat-liver ribosomes were irreversible; (vi) it promotes the release of adenine from purified rat-liver ribosomes. The total activity of this translational inhibitor has been found to increase up to 11-fold during its purification, indicating that some regulatory factor that normally blocks the translational inhibitory activity of the ribosome-inactivating protein in crude extracts of the plant is removed during purification.

Notes: Synopsis We examined the reproductive pattern of an aggregating grouper, the red hind,Epinephelus guttatus, in Puerto Rico. Macroscopic and histological examination of gonads confirmed that, although mature, ripe ovaries are found over a three-month period, spawning activity is limited to about 2 weeks each year. Females are determinate spawners and individuals are able to spawn more than once during the course of the annual spawning season. The red hind is protogynous and 50% maturity is attained at 215 mm fork length. In western Puerto Rico, spawning occurs in aggregations at several sites within loosely defined areas located towards the edge of the insular platform. Sex ratios of individuals taken by hook and line at one of the aggregation areas over a consecutive six-year period, suggest considerable intra- and inter-annual variation most likely attributable to a combination of differential ingress and egress by males and females during the course of an aggregation and to fluctuations in recruitment, differential mortality by sex and sex change among years. A comparative assessment of the reproductive patterns of seven western AtlanticEpinephelus spp. suggests that aggregation-spawning is associated with medium- to large-sized groupers, while smaller groupers do not aggregate. Mating systems vary among congeners in association with trends in male-female size dimorphism, sexual pattern and sperm competition. The short-term, localized, nature of spawning aggregations renders species with this reproductive mode particularly vulnerable to fishing pressure at spawning sites. Aggregating species, therefore, may require special management consideration.

Description: We report on combined ultraviolet and optical observations of early stages of the outburst of Nova Cygni 1992. We show that the initial optical rise and decline were produced by the dramatic increase in UV line opacity and its gradual subsequent lifting as the ejecta expand. The source of the M(sub v) - t(sub 3) relation is easily understood in light of these low-resolution UV spectra. The multiwavelength data confirm the theoretical prediction that a nova evolves at a constant bolometric luminosity in the early stages of outburst. We verify the prediction for this nova for at least the first month of the outburst. The detection of far-UV radiation with the Voyager Ultraviolet Spectrometer and the detection of an increasing X-ray flux with Roentgen Satellite (ROSAT) imply that this phase lasted for more than 6 months.

Description: IUE (International Ultraviolet Explorer) observations were made around the orbits of three Algol-type binaries: R Arae, U Cephei and Algol. These stars were selected to represent, respectively, the rapid, moderate and slow phases of mass transfer and mass loss in Algols. The data was obtained to derive maps of gas flow and mass loss, to study accretion processes and kinetic heating, and to investigate the importance of magnetic fields in these systems. Continuous observations were made from GSFC and VILSPA over 4 1/3 consecutive days during 10 to 14 Sep. 1989. A total of 100 spectra are obtained. This is the first time that Algol systems are observed continuously over their orbits with IUE. Initial results from this program are discussed.
