Notes: Abstract Nonlinear transmission of a cylindrically symmetric weakly guiding single-mode optical fiber with a sharp change of core diameter is estimated in the approximation of weak nonlinearity of the fiber material and is calculated by direct numerical simulation of light propagation. It is shown that an increase or a decrease of nonlinear transmission in comparison with the linear value depends on the way in which the width of the radial mode distribution changes with changing diameter of the structure. Domains of fiber diameters corresponding to an increase of nonlinear transmission in comparison with the linear value are determined.

Notes: Summary Plasma membrane vesicles were prepared from chicken osteoclasts, and active calcium transport was demonstrated in a spectrofluorimetric assay using the fluorescent calcium concentration indicator, fura-2. Transport activity was inhibited by quercetin (10 μM), sodium vanadate (10 μM), and the anticalmodulin agents, compound 48/80 (20 and 200 μg/ml) and calmidazolium (10 and 20 μM). The transport rate (Vmax, 1.3 nmol/mg protein/min) was not altered in the presence of the protonophore, nigericin (1 μM), indicating that proton transport was not driving calcium transport. Release of accumulated calcium in the vesicles occurred with the addition of bromo-A23187 (5 μM) or ionomycin (5 μM). Increasing calcium transport occurred with increasing calcium concentration. Finally, the calmodulin content of the vesicles was demonstrated to be 54–134 U/mg protein. These results demonstrate that a calmodulin-sensitive, ATP-dependent calcium transporter is present in the osteoclast plasma membrane.

Notes: Summary We studied the earthworm distribution in a permanent polder grassland by making two detailed surveys in 1983 and in 1990. Geostatistical procedures were used to investigate the changes in species composition and to determine the dispersal rate. Attention was focused on two soil survey variables closely related to earth-worm distribution, the thickness of the Ah horizon and the number of burrows. The dispersal rate between the two survey dates was 13 m year−1 compared with 10 m year−1 before 1983. The difference was attributed either to the development of new population centres due to dispersal by cow's feet or tractor wheels, this altering the spatial dynamics, or to a lag phase in population development in the years following inoculation.

Notes: Conclusions 1. Over the compaction-pressure range investigated the mechanical properties of multihole ferrite plates increase with rising pressure. The best results were recorded at a pressure of 8 tons/cm2. 2. The coercive force of ferrite plates is strongly affected by compaction pressure. At constant chemical composition corresponding to ferrite 2VT it is possible to alter the coercive force from 2.2 to 1.5 Oe by varying compaction pressure. 3. The coefficients of rectangularity and squareness of the hysteresis loop are strongly affected by compaction-pressure variation at low pressures (up to 3.5 tons/mm2, but remain virtually constant at higher pressures.

Notes: Abstract X-ray diffraction, derivatographic analysis, and the BET method are used to study the processes of synthesis of sialons by carbothermal reduction and simultaneous nitriding of kaolin of the Kyshtymskoe deposit. The synthesis is performed by roasting a mixture of kaolin with colloidal graphite S-1 poured freely or pressed into specimens in a discontinuous-flow furnace with a graphite heater. The influence of the synthesis conditions on the phase composition, the specific surface of the powders, the gas permeability, and the pore size in sialon specimens is established. It is shown that when pressings fabricated from kaolin mixed with graphite S-1 are roasted in nitrogen, the resulting material can have a porosity of 60% with pores 〈 1 μm in size and a gas permeability of 0.02 – 0.08 μm2, which can become a basis for developing a technology of membrane materials.

Notes: Abstract Effects of coralline lime, in combination with 3 kg Cu ha−1 plus 3 kg Zn ha−1, on yield and nutrient uptake by peanut (Arachis hypogea) were studied at three locations in Western Samoa. Coarse (0–10 mm) coralline lime material containing 31.1% Ca and 1.7% Mg was used as lime at 0, 555, 2222 and 5000 kg ha−1. In the Togitogiga soil, which had the lowest level of exchangeable Ca, peanut yield increased by 6 fold after liming with 555 kg ha−1, relative to the unamended control. This yield increase was associated with reduced Mn toxicity as well as reduced Ca deficiency. The alleviation of Mn toxicity was not likely due to decreased Mn solubility because the lime application (555 kg ha−1) increased soil pH by 〈0.1 unit. Rather it was the increased Ca availability which reduced the Mn toxicity through a Ca/Mn antagonism. The critical range of exchangeable Ca for peanut growth was found to be about 1.5–1.6 cmol 1/2Ca2+ kg−1. A Ca/Mn-ratio 〉80 was required for a desirable Ca/Mn balance in peanut tissue. On the other two locations (with exchangeable Ca levels of 1.5–1.6 cmol 1/2Ca2+ kg−1), liming increased peanut yields by 15–20%. Additions of Cu plus Zn also increased the yields, although the increases were small (7%) and not significant at the 95% probability level.
