Notes: Bloch line (BL) propagation with a field-access scheme is necessary for the memory with low power consumption and high storage density. Previously we reported the field-access propagation using Co-Pt bit patterns.1 In these propagation patterns, (a) the drive field margins depend on the BL propagating direction to the magnetized direction of Co-Pt patterns and (b) the operating bias field margins are different at each corner of the stripe domain. The purpose of this paper is to solve these two problems. A new propagation method has been investigated using film thickness modulation patterns.2 The materials used here were magnetic bubble garnet films with composition of (YSmLuCa)3(FeGe)5O12. Fundamental characteristics of the samples are as follows: saturation induction 4πMs 200 G, anisotropy field Hk 1700 Oe, stripe width w and thickness h 5 μm. The thickness modulation patterns with an amplitude of about 1000 A were fabricated with the ion milling method. The stripe domains were stabilized around the 100% etched grooves, and aligned with 18 μm period. BL pair was propagated in the all part of the stripe domain walls at 500 kHz frequency, applying the triangular bias pulsed field with 50 ns rise time and 1000 ns fall time. As the result of the experiments, it has been found that the drive field margins are independent of BL propagation direction and the difference in the operating bias field margins at the each corner of the stripe domain becomes smaller. The BL propagation around the stripe domain was achieved with 5% bias field margin at the drive field of 8.5 Oe.

Notes: An n=1 mode global motion on a field-reversed configuration (FRC) plasma is observed by means of a newly developed optical system. The deviation of the FRC from the coil axis reaches 20%–40% of the plasma radius. In order to push back the FRC to the equilibrium position, a multipole field (quadrupole or hexapole field) is applied. The n=1 motion can be easily controlled by the quadrupole field, the critical field strength of which is required to be about 15% of the confinement field. It is found that the n=2 rotational instability can also be stabilized by strength of the same order. The critical strength for the n=1 motion is theoretically obtained from a model such that the driving energy of the motion given at the formation phase balances with the work done by the multipole field. The theoretical estimation agrees within a factor of 2 with the experimental results. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The active centers of NiFe hydrogenase from Desulfovibrio vulgaris Miyazaki F have been located in the electron-density map calculated at 4 Å resolution. The electron-density map based on five heavy-atom derivatives showed four strong peaks which were clearly distinguished from the protein region. These strong densities have been successfully assigned to three iron–sulfur clusters and one Ni atom by a difference Fourier technique with coefficients of the best phases from the multiple isomorphous replacement (MIR) method and structure factors obtained at five wavelengths (1.040, 1.487, 1.730, 1.743 and 1.750 Å) with the use of a synchrotron radiation source. Four active centers are approximately lined up at a distance of ca 13 Å, which seems reasonable if they are connected with the electron-transfer chain.

Notes: Abstract Mixed oxide catalyst prepared by co-precipitating magnesium oxide and calcium oxide showed an excellent activity for the oxidative coupling of methane. The high performances were presumed to arise from the high basicity of the mixed oxide.

Notes: Abstract The initiation temperature of methane partial oxidation was markedly lowered by platinum wire placed upstream of a high pressure reactor. Added hydrogen in the reactant gas promoted the methanol selectivity. The radicals formed on the platinum surface were desorbed from it and initiated the reaction.

Notes: Summary Histamine content in the rat hypothalamus was lower at 4°C and higher at 31°C compared to that at 21°C. Pretreatment with α-fluoromethylhistidine, a ‘suicide’ inhibitor of histidine decarboxylase, attenuated both the increased level of hypothalamic histamine and rat adaptive behavior at 31°C. Increase of histamine content in the hypothalamus appears to be an important factor contributing to rat adaptive behavior to high environmental temperature.

Notes: Abstract Using the sites of Pagbilao, the Philippines and Pohnpei Island, the Federated States of Micronesia, zonation and development process of mangrove habitats on tidal flats situated in the geomorphic environment excluding estuary, delta, and lagoon or backmarsh behind barrier or beach ridge were discussed from the viewpoint of geomorphology. Zonations of the mangrove forests were observed from seaward to landward in both areas. Most of the zones correspond with the variations of the ground level or deposit. Mangrove peat which has a thickness of about 2 meters was deposited in the main part of the mangrove habitats in both areas. On the other hand, some large Sonneratia alba were observed in the Rhizophora apiculata habitat on Pohnpei Island. The authors presumed that some of the large S. alba have survived by regeneration from fallen stems since the mangrove forest developed on the present site. The maximum depth of the mangrove peat layer reaches 1.7 meter below the present sea level in Pagbilao and over 2.5 meters at Pohnpei Island. The bottom of the mangrove peat was dated at about 2,000 y.B.P. in both areas by the radiocarbon method. The mangrove peat depositional areas have not been moved during the last 2,000 years. Therefore, the mangrove forests seem to have grown in the present sites since 2,000 y.B.P. and accumulated peat in connection with the subsequent sea-level rise. xx]Nomenclature: Scientific names for mangroves follow Tomlinson (1986). xx]Papers presented at the Vth INTECOL Congress at Yokohama 1990.
