    Notes: Magnetic properties R(Fe1−xCox)11.3Nb0.7 compounds have been investigated. All of the compounds crystallize in the tetragonal ThMn12 structure. The unit cell volume slightly decreases with increasing Co content for both systems. Curie temperature (TC) almost increases linearly with increasing Co content for both systems. The maximum of saturation magnetization (Ms) appears around x=0.2 in Ho(Fe1−xCox)11.3Nb0.7 and x=0.15 in Y(Fe1−xCox)11.3Nb0.7 compounds at 5 K. The easy magnetization directions of all compounds are along the crystallographic c axis at room temperature. Thermomagnetic analysis shows that there exists no spin reorientation in the whole ordering temperature range. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy field Ba of Y(Fe1−xCox)11.3Nb0.7 exhibits a maximum with x=0.10 at 5 K and x=0.05 at room temperature, while Ba of Ho(Fe1−xCox)11.3Nb0.7 decreases monotonically with the increasing Co content at room temperature. First-order magnetization process (FOMP) has been observed in Ho(Fe1−xCox)11.3 compounds at low temperature. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We suggest a new design of rapid single flux quantum (RSFQ) logic circuits which is based on a single superconducting layer and does not require a superconducting ground plane. Small inductances of about 10 pH, obligatory for RSFQ circuits, are formed as narrow slits of widths comparable to the London penetration depth ((approximately-equal-to)0.15 μm). The design allows us to decrease the geometric size of the RSFQ cell. Test circuits with YBaCuO grain boundary junctions on asymmetric 32° Y– ZrO2 bicrystals were used to measure the slit inductance per unit length and the mutual inductance of neighboring slits. A typical inductance of a 0.4 μm slit was found to be 0.7–0.8 pH/μm. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have fabricated and tested integrated magnetometers based on the superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). The magnetometer consists of two patterned films of YBa2Cu3O7, separated by an insulating layer of SrTiO3. A multiturn input coil was integrated on top of the SQUID, where the misorientation angle in a SrTiO3 bicrystal substrate was used to form the grain boundary junctions. The noise spectrum was characterized at 77 K and showed that above 10 Hz the magnetometer sensitivity is limited by a white noise level of around 4×10−5 Φ0/Hz1/2. In the 4 mm × 4 mm detection area of the input coil, this translates into a magnetic field sensitivity of 320 fT/ Hz1/2 at 100 Hz. Compared to the theoretical value of an optimized SQUID the white noise level of the magnetometer is two times higher. Below 10 Hz the noise is dominated by 1/f noise mainly due to the critical current fluctuations. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Slits patterned into a YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin film were observed to obstruct Meissner sheet currents leading to an imbalance in the local Meissner screening properties. The new phenomenon was studied with magneto-optic imaging where twin lobes of opposite flux polarity were seen to form near the slits and inside the Meissner region. The lobe closest to the sample edge is always polarized opposite to the applied field. At weak fields, the anomalous flux generation is reversible. At higher fields, but still sufficiently small to keep the vortex penetration front away from the slits, the anomalous current starts nucleating flux lines which become trapped when the field is removed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An integrated dc superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer has been fabricated using a YBa2Cu3O7−x–SrTiO3–YBa2Cu3O7−x multilayer process. The magnetometer consists of a 8.3 mm×8.6 mm pickup coil coupled inductively to a small washer-type SQUID with 9 Ω bicrystal junctions via an integrated 101/2-turn input coil. Using simple direct-coupled read-out electronics with additional positive feedback, a noise level of 9.7 fT/(square root of)Hz at 1 kHz and 53 fT/(square root of)Hz at 1 Hz was measured inside a magnetically shielded room. Due to the low noise level biomagnetic heart and brain signals with high quality and the very weak signals of the peripheral nerve system were recorded. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Sum-frequency surface vibrational spectroscopy was used to characterize H-terminated Si(111) surfaces prepared by different methods. It was found that flash heating of a sample to 1500 K followed by H2 dosing at 900 K yields a surface as good in quality as a wet chemically treated surface. Both surfaces are far superior than that prepared by atomic H adsorption. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Surface–specific sum–frequency vibrational spectroscopy and second-harmonic generation have been used to study the structure of a rubbed polystyrene (PS) surface and the orientation of 4′-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) liquid crystal molecules on it. The results show that the phenyl sidegroups are well aligned by rubbing in the direction perpendicular to rubbing but tilt from the surface normal with a broad distribution. Although the PS surface is nonpolar, the 5CB molecules appear to adsorb on PS preferentially with the terminal cyano group facing the PS surface. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report the asymmetry of longitudinal magneto-optical Kerr loops obtained from diffracted spots of a NiFe grating. The analysis of several series of diffracted Kerr hysteresis loops reveals that the unsaturated magnetic structure not only contributes to the shape change of Kerr loops, but also results in asymmetric feature of Kerr loops because of the nonzero value of second-order magnetic response. A suitable pattern dimension, which defines the form factor, is helpful to observe asymmetry Kerr loops. Our experiment indicates that out-of-incidence-plane diffraction may offer an alternative method to observe lateral edge domain movements in patterns. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Data are presented on high-power AlGaInN flip-chip light-emitting diodes (FCLEDs). The FCLED is "flipped-over" or inverted compared to conventional AlGaInN light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and light is extracted through the transparent sapphire substrate. This avoids light absorption from the semitransparent metal contact in conventional epitaxial-up designs. The power FCLED has a large emitting area (∼0.70 mm2) and an optimized contacting scheme allowing high current (200–1000 mA, J∼30–143 A/cm2) operation with low forward voltages (∼2.8 V at 200 mA), and therefore higher power conversion ("wall-plug") efficiencies. The improved extraction efficiency of the FCLED provides 1.6 times more light compared to top-emitting power LEDs and ten times more light than conventional small-area (∼0.07 mm2) LEDs. FCLEDs in the blue wavelength regime (∼435 nm peak) exhibit ∼21% external quantum efficiency and ∼20% wall-plug efficiency at 200 mA and with record light output powers of 400 mW at 1.0 A. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Sum-frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy was used to study how side alkyl chains of a polyimide are oriented at the air–polymer interface and how they are affected by mechanical rubbing and adsorption of a liquid crystal monolayer. The spectra of polyimides with various alkyl chain lengths all indicate that the chains protrude out of the polyimide surface with a very broad distribution. Longer alkyl chains appear to contain more gauche defects. While the polyimide backbones are aligned by rubbing, the side chain orientation is hardly affected. Adsorption of a liquid crystal monolayer on the surface significantly reduces the gauche defects in the alkyl chains. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
