    Notes: Summary A statistical investigation of the world-wide electric current-systems corresponding to s.c's has been carried out. The storm-time variationDst and the disturbance diurnal variationDs of s.c's are derived separately from the results of the average local-time variations in the magnetic field at different latitudes. A conspicuousDs current-system is found in the inner polar regions, and a concentrated current-flow is also confirmed along the geomagnetic equator resembling the current-system of an enhancedSq-field. The inner polar region currents flow towards the meridian at about 9h local-time and are supposed to complete their path along the outer auroral zone in opposite directions in the forenoon and afternoon hemispheres. It is of interest that the pattern of this atmospheric electric current-system is very similar to that caused by an electric doublet centred on the highiy conducting region near the pole. Some observed facts concerning the statistical nature of s.c's can be explained by these current-systems.

    Notes: Abstract A genetic map of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) integrating molecular markers with morphological and isozyme markers was constructed using a backcross population of 67 diploid potato plants. A general method for map construction is described that differs from previous methods employed in potato and other outbreeding plants. First, separate maps for the female and male parents were constructed. The female map contained 132 markers, whereas the male map contained 138 markers. Second, on the basis of the markers in common the two integrated parental maps were combined into one with the computer programme JoinMap. This combined map consisted of 175 molecular markers, 10 morphological markers and 8 isozyme markers. Ninety-two of the molecular markers were derived from DNA sequences flanking either T-DNA inserts in potato or reintegrated maize transposable elements originating from these T-DNA constructs. Clusters of distorted segregation were found on chromosomes 1,2,8 and 11 for the male parent and chromosome 5 for both parents. The total length of the combined map is 1120 cM.

    Notes: Abstract  The NTP303 gene of tobacco is expressed only in bicellular pollen. The minimal pollen-specific promoter of the gene is located between –103 and –51 upstream of the transcriptional start site. Using gel mobility shift assays, we demonstrated that this minimal functional promoter interacts with a leaf nuclear GT-1 binding activity. This finding suggests that ubiquitous transcription factors are involved in the pollen-specific expression of the gene in vivo.

    Notes: Abstract The Persistent Lisp language was defined and an implementation, UCL+P, 1 was designed and constructed. Persistent Lisp is a superset of Common Lisp which fully supports the development of programs manipulating persistent data while maintaining Lisp semantics across the storage/retrieval of values. Persistence features provided are concurrent atomic transactions, demand loading of values, and transparent load and store of persistent values. All Common Lisp data types (with the exception of streams) can be made persistent. Nonsymbolic values are initially created as transient values on the runtime heap. When a transaction completes, transient values which are reachable from a persistent symbol become persistent. The package mechanism has been extended to add a persistence attribute to packages. When symbols are interned in a package with the persistence attribute, they become persistent, as do values reachable from them. UCL+P was created to support these features, by making extensive low-level modifications to the UCL compiler and runtime system. A new runtime data structure, the indirection vector, was created to support the relocation of newly persistent values from the runtime heap to the persistent heap.

    Notes: Abstract  The Heimefrontfjella mountains, Western Dronning Maud Land (East Antarctica), are dominantly composed of Grenville-aged (∼1.1 Ga) rocks, which were reworked during the Pan -African orogeny at ∼500 Ma. Three discontinuity-bounded Grenville-aged terranes have been recognized namely (from north to south) the Kottas, Sivorg and Vardeklettane terranes. The terranes contain their own characteristic lithological assemblages, although each is made up of an early supracrustal sequence of metavolcanic and/or metasedimentary gneisses, intruded by various (predominantly granitoid) suites. No older basement upon which the protoliths of these older gneisses were deposited has been recognized. In each terrane the older layered gneisses were intruded by various plutonic suites ranging in age from ∼1150 to ∼1000 Ma. The Vardeklettane terrane is characterized by abundant charnockites and two-pyroxene granulite facies parageneses in metabasites, whereas the Sivorg and Kottas terranes were metamorphosed to amphibolite facies grade. P–T estimates show that peak metamorphic conditions changed from ∼600  °C at 8 kbar in the south, to ∼700  °C at 4 kbar in the northern Sivorg terrane. Regional greenschist retrogression of high-grade assemblages may be of Pan-African age. The Heimefrontfjella terranes were juxtaposed and pervasively deformed during a complex and protracted period of E–W collision orogenesis in a transpressive regime at ∼1.1 Ga. This is manifest as early, gently dipping thrust-related shear fabrics (D1), succeeded by the initiation of an important (D2) steep dextral shear zone (Heimefront shear zone, HSZ), during which the early fabrics and structures were steepened and rotated in an anticlockwise sense. The HSZ is a curvilinear structure which changes from a dextral oblique strike-slip lateral ramp in the north to a steep dip-slip frontal ramp in the south, where it forms the boundary between the Sivorg and Vardeklettane terranes. The Pan-African event is manifested as discrete, low- to medium-temperature ductile to brittle shears (D3) and numerous K/Ar cooling ages.

    Notes: Abstract ZnxMg1-xFe2O4 mixed oxide spinels (x=0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0) were prepared by conventional solid state reaction method. Bulk and surface characterization of these ferrites were carried out by different techniques. The ratios Zn/Fe and Mg/Fe determined by PIXE and AAS were nearly as expected from the synthesis mixture, i.e. following the substitution model. XRD shows only a spinel structure (fcc) with increasing lattice parameter as x increases from 0 to 1. The bulk ratios of tetrahedral to octahedral sites occupied by Fe cations measured by NGR are in good agreement with the theoretical bulk stoichiometry. LEIS results indicate a Mg substitution by Fe cations at the surface. Only octahedral sites are proposed at the surface. The transition from inverse to normal spinel was follow through NGR-spectra occurring at x=0.4.

    Notes: Abstract Plasma source ion implantation (PSII) is a technique for modifying stafaces that places the object to he modified directly into a plasma and then negatively pulse biases the object so as to implant positive ions. If the voltage is high enough, X-rays can he generated by electrons that are also accelerated by the pulse. This work describes techniques for imaging and characterizing the X-rays A pinhole camera was used to image the X-rays being emitted as electrons collided with surfaces in the chamber. The images show that X-rays are generated at the chamber walls and near the target. The time dependence of these X-rays during each pulse was examined using a PIN diode X-ray detector. Then, using another X-ray sensor and pulseheight analyzer, the spectra of the emitted X-rays was determined. The object is to relate the X-ray intensity and spectrum to the temporal and spatial values of the implantation dose so that it may he used as a process monitor and a control sensor.

    Notes: Abstract Secondary metabolism is restricted to specific places in the plant. The concentrations of precursors and end products are the determining factors in the metabolic control of synthesis and breakdown of the compounds involved. Molecular control operates at the level of enzyme amount and gene expression. If the secondary product contains an element in its molecule which is derived from a mineral nutrient in the environment, the operation of the control mechanisms can be studied by varying the concentration of that mineral. This is exemplified by thiophene metabolism in root cultures ofTagetes. The characteristic groups in the molecule are two five-membered rings with a sulphur atom. In the experiments, the rate of thiophene biosynthesis was manipulated by varying the sulphate concentration in the medium. Sulphur limitation led to preferential channeling of sulphur into primary metabolism and a concomitant drop in thiophene biosynthesis. The major part of the reduction was caused by a drop in enzyme activity. Substrate availability played a minor role. The results indicate that sulphur is involved in the molecular control of secondary metabolism inTagetes.

    Notes: Abstract Spinel ferrites are commercially important because of their excellent magnetic and catalytic properties. The study by Low Energy Ion Scattering (LEIS) can reveal atomic scale information on the surface. The surface of selected spinel ferrites was investigated by LEIS. It has been found that it is the octahedral sites which are preferentially exposed on the surface of the spinel ferrites. So the probable planes which are exposed on spinel ferrite surfaces are D(110) or B(111). This prediction using LEIS gives scope for tailor-making compounds with catalytically active ions on the surface for various catalytic reactions.
