Notes: Crosslinked samples of polyethylene were prepared by electron irradiation of both high- and low-density polymers in the crystalline state. A further crosslinked sample was obtained by curing a high-density polyethylene by reaction with dicumyl peroxide at 180°C. The stress-strain-birefringenece relations were obtained on specimens cut from these samples at temperatures between 130 and 250°C. All samples showed a substantial decrease in stress-optical coefficient with increasing degree of crosslinking and with increasing temperature. The stress-optical properties at each temperature were extrapolated to zero degree of crosslinking to give quantities characteristic of the Gaussian network. Comparison of these properties with the theory of networks of rotational isomeric chains with both independent and interdependent rotation allows estimates to be obtained for (1) the trans-gauche energy differences in rotation around skeletal bonds and (2) the difference in principal optical polarizabilities for the CH2 group in the elastomeric state. This latter quantity is shown to be more nearly given by Denbigh's than by Bunn and Daubeny's bond polarizability values.

Notes: Thermal degradation behavior of poly(1,3-phenylene isophthalamide) and poly(chloro-2,4-phenylene isophthalamide) was investigated with the aid of some appropriate model compounds. The pyrolysis products of these materials were identified by gas chromatography (GC), gas chromatography/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (GC/FT-IR), and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The residual chars were characterized by IR spectroscopy. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was applied to study the effect of end-group concentration on the degradation characteristics of the two polyamides. Kinetic parameters that describe the thermal degradation of the polyamides were also evaluated by TGA. The results of this investigation suggest that the thermal decomposition of these aromatic polyamides involves homolytic as well as hydrolytic cleavages of the amide units.

Notes: Polyperfluorobut-2-yne is prepared by a fluoride ion-induced polymerization of hexafluorobut-2-yne. The mass spectrum indicates a regular fragmentation pattern but the ESCA spectrum establishes the structure as a polyene, rather than a crosslinked system, and the occurrence of a shake-up peak assists in this assignment.

Notes: Optical-absorption, fluorescence, and Raman spectra for solutions, suspensions, and precipitates of poly(1,6-di-p-toluene sulfonoxy-2,4-hexadiyne) in and from nitrobenzene, acetone, and chloroform are presented. These are interpreted in terms of the occurrence of two forms of the polymer chain; a quasicrystalline form with properties close to those of single crystal polymer and a chain-extended form occurring in solution and colloidal particles, with an absorption energy of about 2.5 eV (20,000 cm-1). No evidence is found for the presence of very short polymer chains in partially polymerized monomer at low conversion. The relationship of these results to those for deformed single crystals is briefly discussed.

Notes: Poly(ethylene terephthalate) was exposed in vacuo γ-radiation from a Co60 source at a dose rate of 0.02 Mrad/min., and an ambient temperature of 47°C. Gaseous products were analyzed in a mass spectrometer and carboxyl groups estimated by titration with NaOH and by infrared analysis. Initial G values were —COOH = 0.77, CO2 = 0.17, CO = 0.11, H2 = 0.015, and CH4 = 0.003. All these values decreased markedly with increasing dose except G(CO)2, which, roughly, was maintained up to 5000 Mrad. It was considered whether the dependence on dose of the yields of the major reaction products could be accounted for by the following set of first-order reactions: It was found that the rate of formation of —COOH groups at low doses was much too high to fit this simple reaction scheme. However, a better fit was obtained over a range of higher doses (ca. 100-5000 Mrad). A final conclusion could not be reached concerning the validity of the above reaction scheme.

Notes: The electroinitiated preparation of equimolar copolymers of styrene and diethyl fumarate is described. The reaction medium consisted of these monomers dissolved in a methanol-zinc bromide solution. Rates of polymerization increased with increasing applied current and the copolymer yield increased linearly with the total number of Faradays transferred. The copolymer composition is 1:1 and is essentially invariant with the degree of conversion (〈15%), electroinitiation rate, and monomer feed ratios. A reaction mechanism involving donor-acceptor complexes and electroinitiated excitation of these complexes at the electrode is postulated.

Notes: A comparative analysis of photoinitiation and electroinitiation can help elucidate initiation processes in donor-acceptor charge-transfer copolymerization. The technique has been applied to the zinc bromide-catalyzed copolymerization of styrene and diethyl fumarate in methanol. The photocopolymer product was analyzed by GPC, NMR, and elemental analysis. The results showed that 1:1 copolymers were formed initially, but changes occurred in both the kinetics and products after the early stages of the reaction. Significant correlations found between the two initiation methods included the initial kinetic order with respect to the initiating process and the effect on product yield of equivalent increases in total initiation energy. The limiting value of zinc bromide for both initiation methods was found to be the same. The data obtained support the contention that the copolymerization proceeds through a donor-acceptor process and that photoactivation of the preformed complex, inducing electron transfer, is a likely initiation process.

Description: The detection of the J = 10 manifold of the pure rotational band of PH3 on Saturn is reported. The observations were made from the far-infrared cooled grating spectrometer. The wavelengths and observed brightness temperatures for the full disk plus rings are 89 + or - 3 K at 97.04 micrometer, 77 + or - 3 K at 102.72 micrometer, 77 + or - 3 K at 102.94 micrometer, and 83 + or - 3 K at 105.12 micrometers. The points of 97.04 and 105.12 micrometers establish the continuum level and the two points near 103 micrometers measure the depth of the PH3 manifold. After the flux due to the rings is subtracted, the depth of the feature is 16 + or - 6 K relative to the nearby 102 K continuum. These results are compared to theoretical models which parameterize the PH3 mixing ratio as x = x sub zero (P/P sub zero)(alpha) for P P sub zero and as x = x sub zero for P or = P, where P is the total pressure and alpha = H/h is the ratio of the dynamical scale height (H) and the scale height for decreasing the PH3 mixing ratio (h). The parameters x sub zero, P sub zero, and h were varied, as well as the H/He mixing ratio and the pressure-temperature profile. The data are well fitted using pressure-temperature profiles. The preferred values of h, P sub zero, and x sub zero imply that there is little or no PH3 above the thermal inversion and that the mixing ratio below the inversion is consistent with PH3 being 1 to 4 times overabundant relative to the solar P/H ratio.

Description: The Ames Research Center Pioneer 11 plasma analyzer experiment provided measurements of the solar wind interaction with Saturn and the character of the plasma environment within Saturn's magnetosphere. It is shown that Saturn has a detached bow shock wave and magnetopause quite similar to those at earth and Jupiter. The scale size of the interaction region for Saturn is roughly one-third that at Jupiter, but Saturn's magnetosphere is equally responsive to changes in the solar wind dynamic pressure. Saturn's outer magnetosphere is inflated, as evidenced by the observation of large fluxes of corotating plasma. It is postulated that Saturn's magnetosphere may undergo a large expansion when the solar wind pressure is greatly diminished by the presence of Jupiter's extended magnetospheric tail when the two planets are approximately aligned along the same solar radial vector.

Description: It is pointed out that the redeployment of ISEE 3 from its continuous monitoring of the solar wind in a large orbit about the upstream Lagrangian point to an extended magnetotail orbit has afforded an opportunity for deep-tail passage of October 1982, and in the radial range from 200 to 220 R(E) during the near-apogee part of the second tail passage in January-February 1983. Attention is given to instrumentation and data sets, spacecraft positions, and observational data.
