    Notes: Abstract The kinetics of molybdenum sulfidation have been studied in H2S/H2 gas mixtures at 1173 K. Sulphur partial pressures were controlled by the equilibrium reaction between H2S, H2, and S2. Pure molybdenum metal was sulfidized at a fixed $$p{_S} _{_2 } $$ value of 133 Pa with varying H2S and H2 partial pressures, and at fixed H2S partial pressures of 5.06×10 pa4 and 5.06×103 Pa with varying hydrogen and sulfur partial pressures. The gravimetric sulfidation kinetics were parabolic under all conditions. X-ray diffraction analysis of the reaction product scale revealed the presence of MoS2 only. The sulfide scales were of uniform thickness, had a compact morphology, and were tightly adherent to the metal. The sulfidation rates at a fixed sulfur partial pressure increased with increasing hydrogen partial pressure. At fixed $$p{_H} _{_2} {_S} $$ values, the rate was almost constant at high $$p{_H} _{_2 } $$ values, but increased substantially as $$p{_H} _{_2 } $$ was decreased. Defect models for hydrogen dissolution in MoS2 are developed and compared with the experimental results. It is concluded that the sulfidation rate effects are due to hydride anion occupation of interlayer sites in MoS2.

    Notes: Abstract This paper reports the successful co-deposition of inclusion-free chromiummodified aluminide coatings using a pack-cementation process. The substrate used was the nickel-base superalloy, René 80H. The coatings were of the outward-diffusion type; however, unlike the usual outward-diffusion coatings, the present coatings were relatively free of pack inclusions. The coatings consisted of α-Cr precipitates in a matrix of β-NiAl. The morphology and distribution of the α-Cr precipitates could be adjusted to the extent that two types of coating structures could be obtained. The Type I coating structure contained lamellar α-Cr precipitates situated in the surface region of the coating, whereas the Type II coating structure contained small, spheroidal α-Cr precipitates distributed throughout the outer of a two-layered coating. Both coating types exhibited significantly improved hot-corrosion resistance in a 0.1% SO2-O2 environment at 900°C compared to a commercial aluminide coalting. A study of the corrosion behavior of Type I coatings containing pack inclusions showed that the inclusions were deleterious to the corrosion resistance of the coatings. The corrosion behavior of chromium-aluminide coatings was dependent on both the distribution and amount of α-Cr precipitates in the coating.

    Notes: Abstract The interface in clean glass fibre-polypropylene and silane-treated glass fibre-polypropylene pull-out specimens has been studied. The nature of the silane layer on the treated fibres was examined and the influence of agglomerates in the silane layer on the nucleating ability of the fibre surface has been considered. Transcrystalline sheaths of polypropylene were observed in the water-quenched samples but not the air-cooled and 50 °C oven-cooled samples. The nature of the interface and the plane of failure have been determined utilizing optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy of both the fibre and matrix-failure surfaces. The shrinkage stresses in the air-cooled and oven-cooled clean fibre specimens were relieved by the formation of kink bands. The results suggest the existence of an interphase. The different interfacial strengths in the silane-treated and clean fibre specimens can be explained in terms of the above findings.

    Notes: Abstract It is shown that the interfacial parameters of a composite system which include the interfacial shear strength, the interfacial coefficient of friction, and the shrinkage pressure can be determined using the proposed model for the debonding and pull-out processes. The effect of the matrix morphology and the fibre surface treatment on the interfacial parameters, and hence on the mechanical properties, for a glass fibre-polypropylene system was determined.

    Notes: Abstract The processes for debonding and pull-out in parallel-sided as well as tapered fibre composites are described. Models which can predict and account for all the reported experimental debonding and pull-out behaviour are developed. The effect of the interfacial properties on the plot of maximum pull-out force against fibre embedded length is elucidated. Knowledge of the interfacial parameters of a composite allows proper characterization and leads to better prediction of the mechanical properties.

    Notes: Summary A library of wheat genomic DNA HpaII tiny fragments (HTF), sized below 500 bp, has been constructed. Of the clones in the library 80% belong to the single/low-copy category, while 12% of the clones are nuclear repetitive sequences and 8% originate from the chloroplast and mitochondrial DNA. This result shows a substantial enrichment in the single/low-copy sequences of the wheat genome, which contains at least 80% repetitive sequences. Twenty-nine random single/lowcopy clones were analysed further for wheat chromosome location, cross-hybridisation to barley DNA and their association with rare-cutting, C-methylation-sensitive restriction sites. The results show that the HTF clones are associated more frequently than expected with NotI, MluI, NruI and PstI sites in wheat and barley genomic DNA. The 12% repetitive fraction of the clones contain both moderately and highly repetitive sequences, but no tandemly repeated sequences. The level of enrichment for single/low-copy sequences indicates that libraries of this type are a valuable source of probes for RFLP mapping. In addition, the close association of the HTF clones with rare-cutting restriction enzyme sites ensures that HTF clones will have a useful role in the construction of long-range physical maps in wheat.

    Notes: Abstract RAPD (random amplified polymorphic DNA) markers were used to fingerprint eight commercially available apple rootstocks (Nertchinsk, Northern Spy, Osman, Heyer 12, M.1, M.9, M.26 and MM.106), 10 winter hardy offsprings derived from the cross of Nertchinsk x M.9, six winter hardy offsprings derived from the cross of Nertchinsk x M.26 and one winter hardy offspring derived from each of the two crosses between Osman x Heyer 12 and Northern Spy x M.1. Phylogeny analysis using parsimony allowed us to draw the genetic relationship between these lines using only RAPD markers data. The resulting cladogram was compared to the true genetic relationship between these lines in order to assess the efficiency of RAPD markers in determining accurately the phylogenetic relationship. We also developed a DNA fingerprinting system based on 13 informative RAPD loci amplified by five RAPD primers that allowed the rapid identification of apple rootstocks.

    Notes: Summary Long-range physical maps of the small multigene family of the malt α-amylase genes (α-Amy-1) located on the long arms of wheat chromosomes 6A (the α-Amy-A1 locus) and 6B (α-Amy-B1) were generated by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis analysis. By using three methylation-sensitive rare-cutter restriction endonucleases, NotI, NruI and MluI, and an α-Amy-1 cDNA probe and four gene-specific genomic probes from the α-Amy-B1 locus, the size of the α-Amy-B1 locus was estimated to be about 700 kb and of the α-Amy-B1 locus to be about approximately 4300 kb. These two maps indicate clustering of GC-rich and C-methylation-sensitive restriction enzyme recognition sites. At least five regions reminiscent of ‘CpG islands’ are apparent in α-Amy-B1, and three in α-Amy-A1. Correlation between recombination frequency and physical distance within the α-Amy-B1 locus suggests that 1 cM approximates to 1 Mb in physical distance.
