Notes: A zinc sulfide concentrate was leached microbiologically by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in a continuous stirred tank reactor. A model was developed to predict, the leaching kinetics when the bacterial growth rate was not limited by any substrate other than the zinc concentrate, and it was modified to explain the observed results.Stable steady sates were obtained over a range of dilution rates from 0.0171 to 0.1038 hr-1. Because a solid substrate was used, the specific growth rate of the bacaeria was not a unique function of the subastrate concentration, and conventional contnuous culture theory based on the Monod equation did not apply to this system. The leaching rates and bacterial growth rates were first order in mineral surface area cocentration.

Notes: The hydrodynamic behavior of paper pulp slurries in vertical laminar flow has been observed and modeled. Radiotracers were used to tag both the liquid and solid phases of slurries flowing in 4 and 30 cm pipes. Residence time distributions were determined for each phase and were used to derive and compare several flow models. A model consisting of a central core in plug flow circumscribed by a clear Newtonian annulus provides a good representation of the observed slurry behavior. Correlations between the model parameters and the Reynolds number and slurry consistency are presented, and implications of the results on the design of slurry flow reactors are discussed.

Notes: The intrinsic viscosity of cellulose triacetate (CTA) in chloroform-methanol, chloroform-butanol, chloroform-propanol, tetrachloroethane-butanol, dimethyl formamide-methanol, and nitromethane-methanol mixtures is found to increase initially with the amounts of alcohols in the mixture, then decreases in each studied system after attaining a maximum value, while in chloroform-cyclohexane and dioxane-benzene systems values are found to decrease with the decreasing solvent power. The type of the polymer conformation in the binary solvents is found to be dependent on the acetic acid content of the polymer. Studies on the temperature dependence of viscosity in pure and mixed solvent systems indicate that CTA behaves as a stiff chain molecule in the solution.

Notes: In this paper we use probabilistic arguments to derive and discuss the spatial distribution of molecules which are undergoing electrophoresis or centrifugation while at the same time they are switching back and forth between two configurational states. An exact solution is obtained for arbitrary values of the diffusion coefficients of the two isomerizing states. The traditional analytic method of solving this problem, namely, by use of “master equations,” is not completely satisfactory because one can find only the Fourier transform of the solution rather than the solution itself. Our treatment yields the answer one would get if it were feasible to perform the inversion of the Fourier transform.

Notes: Poly(Lys(Cbz)-Ala-Glu(OBzl)) was prepared by the self-condensation of Lys(Cbz)-Ala-Glu(OBzl)-ONSu in dimethylformamide. After deprotection of the side chains, the product was subjected to Sephadex G-50 chromatography. The molecular weight of unfractionated and fractionated poly(Lys-Ala-Glu) was calculated from a calibrated Sephadex G-50 column, spectrophotometrically from Dnp-(Lys-Ala-Glu), equilibrium centrifugation, and viscosity measurements. Approximately 21% of the unfractionated material was polymeric with the remaining 79% being cyclic and monomeric material. Treatment of polymer hydrolysate with L-amino acid and D-amino acid oxidase indicated poly(Lys-Ala-Glu) to be optically pure. The apparent pKa's of the two ionizable groups were 4.1 and 9.7.

Notes: Identification of short side chain sterols in the sponge Damiriana hawaiianaThe steroidal composition of the sponge Damiriana hawaiiana is examined. Twenty-seven components are identified. In addition to the C26-C29, Δ5-mono and diunsaturated sterols, the sponge contains sterols without side-chain: androsta-5, 16-dien-3β-ol(1), androst-5-en-3β-ol(2); sterols with a non-functionalized side-chain consisting of two, three, four, five and six carbon atoms: pregna-5, 20-dien-3β-ol(5), pregn-5-en-3β-ol(6), 23, 24-bisnor-chola-5, 20-dien-3β-ol(7), 23, 24-bisnor-chol-5-en-3β-ol(8), 24-nor-chol-5-en-3β-ol(10), chol-5-en-3β-ol(11), 26, 27-bisnor-cholest-5-en-3β-ol(12), and sterols possessing a short oxygenated side-chain such as 3β-hydroxy-androst-5-en-17-one(3), androst-5-en-3β, 17β-diol(4) and 3β-hydroxy-26, 27-bisnor-22-trans-cholesta-5, 22-dien-24-one(14). The probable biological or dietary origin rather than artifact production of these hitherto undescribed components from marine sources is supported by their relatively high concentration and their relative proportions, both very different from those expected for autoxidation.

Notes: Some structural features of the diagonal problem of reduced density matrix theory are investigated by considering the cone Br introduced elsewhere. In some special cases, we discover a very tight connection between the group structure of Gr, the invariance group of Br, and the convex structure of Br. We also state a general theorem that relates the convex structure of Br to the group structure of Gr.
