    Notes: Abstract Electronic root canal length measurement devices have made it easier and faster to measure the root canal length of a tooth compared with the conventional radiographic method. Of these electronic apex locators, the frequency-dependent type features greater accuracy and convenience in operation. However, its accuracy is still influenced by the presence of blood and/or the various electrolytes used in root canal therapy. This study describes the development of a new frequency-dependent electronic apex locator featuring electrolyte compensation, utilising an impedance ratio and voltage difference technique to minimise the influence of electrolytes on the accuracy of root canal length measurement. The errors for distances from file tips to apical constrictions were determined in vivo with the device operating with electrolyte compensation. The measured lengths were compared with the true lengths of the extracted teeth determined using a microscope. The mean error was +0.14±0.27 mm, and 95.2% of the measurements were within the clinical tolerance of ±0.5 mm. It was also found that the degree of accuracy was not dependent on the size of the apical foramen (p=0.74).

    Notes: Abstract Nickel metal introduced into Y-zeolite exhibited a high catalytic activity in the dehydro-genation of methane and in the hydrogenation of carbon dioxide with methane to obtain hydrogen and CO at about 850 K. The activity strongly depended on the nickel amount in NaY, and the catalytic properties were influenced by the kind of cations in the Y-zeolite. The higher CO2 conversion was obtained over Ni supported on non-acidic zeolites.

    Notes: Abstract A composite coating of aluminide-yttrium has shown excellent corrosion resistance in a cyclic high-temperature hot-corrosion environment. To understand the effect of yttrium on the stability of the composite coating, the specimens were prepared with various coating parameters of Y thickness, sequence of post heat treatment and surface condition before Y-ion plating. Performance of the composite coating was evaluated by isothermal oxidation and cyclic high-temperature hot corrosion. Isothermal-oxidation-test results show that the Y in the composite coating helps to form a thick and dense Al2O3 scale which is ductile and resistant to thermal stress. The Y in Al2O3 may act as a donor which leads to an increase in concentration of interstitial oxygen and, thus, increases in oxidation rate. The presence of Y2O3 and (Y, Al) O-type compounds in grain boundaries of Al2O3 and boundaries between the Al2O3 and NiAl effectively prohibits the fast diffusion of oxidants (such as O and S) and Al along grain boundaries. Consequently, it may induce slow diffusion through the matrix, and thus the corrosion resistance of the composite coating under cyclic hot corrosion increases substantially.

    Notes: Abstract An application of direct bonding method for copper to silicon nitride (Si3N4) joining was investigated. Si3N4 was sintered with 5wt% MgO at 1700 ° C for 30 min in nitrogen atmosphere, and oxidized at various temperatures. The bonding was performed at 1075 ° C in nitrogen atmosphere with low oxygen partial pressure. The direct bonding was not achieved for the Si3N4 oxidized below 1200 ° C or nonoxidized. During oxidation, magnesium ion added as sintering aids, diffused out to the surface of Si3N4 and formed MgSiO3, which seemed to have an important role in the bonding. Fracture of the bonded specimen under tensile stress took place within the oxide layer of Si3N4. The bonding strength was decreased with oxidation temperature and time. Maximum strength was found to be 106 kg cm−2 for the Si3N4 oxidized at 1200 ° C for 1 h.

    Notes: Abstract YBa2Cu3O x superconductor was synthesized using Y2BaCuO5, BaCuO2, and CuO powder mixture. Reaction temperatures were identified using differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetry (TG) for syntheses of precursor powders and the powder mixtures. Appropriate reaction temperatures for Y2BaCuO5 and BaCuO2 precursor powders were 950 and 930°C, respectively. Two endothermic reactions involving melt formations were identified on the DTA and TG curves of the powder mixture, and the liquid increased the reactivity of the YBa2Cu3O x formation. Powder mixture samples were sintered at various temperatures ranging from 880 to 1000°C. Microstructural and X-ray powder diffraction studies showed YBa2Cu3O x and impurities to be formed in the samples sintered at various temperatures. The samples sintered at 990 and 1000°C showed dense microstructures. The critical temperature was 84 K for the sample sintered at 880°C and rose to 92 K as the sintering temperature increased.
