Notes: Abstract The molecular structure of room temperature (RT) nylon 66 and its transition to the high temperature (HT) form have been examined by X-ray crystallographic techniques. An initial literature survey on the RT form revealed a number of anomalies in the spatial relationships of the molecules within the unit cell, namely, poor ethylenic segment packing, distortion of the amide group from a planar configuration and lack of similarity on the projected cell base between RT nylon 66 and RT nylon 6. These anomalies have been resolved, and models proposed which give a better fit between calculated and observed data. The remainder of the paper describes the examination of the HT form with the object of determining whether or not a three-dimensional hydrogen bonded network could exist beyond 180° C. By determining unit cell dimensions and measuring intermolecular hydrogen bond distances it was possible to eliminate certain directions for hydrogen bonded planes. On the basis that any such distance must not exceed about 0.31 nm, which is the maximum hydrogen bond distance reported in the literature, it was concluded that a three-dimensional network could not exist. The cause of the structural transition is attributed to progressive changes in ethylenic segment torsion angles.

Notes: Abstract Ductile yielding of the Dugdale type and brittle fracture in the Barenblatt sense are investigated for regions at the ends of a periodic array of semi-infinite parallel cracks in a stretched orthotropic sheet. Direct transform methods are used to obtain the Wiener-Hopf equation. Factorization of the kernel and several other steps of the analysis can be completed in closed form for a dense class of elastic constants, and asymptotic forms are derived for other cases. The solutions depend upon the finite spacing between cracks and have characteristics which have been observed in experiments: 1) At high load levels the yield zone of the ductile material grows in jumps; 2) For a brittle material the allowable load level increases as the speciman size decreases.

Notes: Abstract The electrical conductivity of liquid sulphur has been measured from the melting point to 900° C, evaporation of the sulphur being prevented by use of an atmosphere of argon at elevated pressure. With rise in temperature, the conductivity increases except at the polymerization maximum near 170° C where a minimum in the conductivity is confirmed. Above 400° C the plot of logσ versus 1/T is linear, and on the assumption that the conductivity at these temperatures is intrinsic, a value of ∼3.1 eV is obtained for the energy gap. Although the rise in conductivity above 400° C is accompanied by a decrease in mean chain length in the liquid, there is no simple relationship between the two properties. The behaviour of sulphur is compared with that of liquid selenium.

Notes: Abstract A degradation in the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of aluminium-coated carbon fibres was associated with the formation of a reaction layer of aluminium carbide during annealing treatments ⩾ 475° C for high tensile fibres (HT) and ⩾ 550° C for high modulus fibres (HM). It was established that for a given annealing treatment, the UTS depended on the square root of the original coating thickness and proposed that fracture was controlled by cracks in the aluminium carbide, with a specific surface energy (γ) and intrinsic crack length (c 0) of 2.33 J m−2 and ∼ 30 nm for HT fibres, and of 0.64 to 0.77 J m−2 and ∼ 20 nm for HM fibres.

Notes: Abstract The process of filament-winding and electroforming is a promising method for the fabrication of fibre-reinforcing metal composites. A simple test has been developed to evaluate some electroplating solutions of interest. It has been found that simple salt solutions work satisfactorily with the process but this was not the case with highly complexed solutions. The observed growth behaviour is explained in terms of the differences in micro-throwing power between the solutions investigated.
