    Notes: The microstructure and in-plane magnetic properties of Co72Cr10Pt18/NiAl thin films sputter deposited on (001) single crystal MgO substrates have been investigated. The orientation relationship between the NiAl underlayer and the MgO substrate is determined to be [001](100)NiAl//[001](110)MgO. The CoCrPt films grow in a fibrous manner on the (001) NiAl underlayer and the orientation relationship between the two layers is determined to be [101¯1]CoCrPt//[001]NiAl, and (12¯10)CoCrPt//(100)NiAl (variant 1), or (12¯10)CoCrPt//(010)NiAl (variant 2). The CoCrPt film has two sets of in-plane magnetization easy axes. The major easy axes are along the MgO[100] (i.e., NiAl[11¯0]) and the MgO[010] (i.e., NiAl[110]) directions and the secondary easy axes are along the MgO[110] (i.e., NiAl[100]) and the [1¯10] (i.e., NiAl[010]) directions. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The reciprocal lattices of fibrous and lamellar textured polycrystalline thin films are analyzed on the basis of the number of distinct angles made between planes of {hkl} families with the texture axis. Tables of the maximum possible number of such distinct angles between any given direction/plane and all faces of a given family of planes for all the crystal systems are included in this paper. Based on these reciprocal lattices, parallel and tilted electron-diffraction-pattern characteristics of the textured films are elucidated. A method of indexing the arced electron diffraction patterns of the textured films is proposed. This method can be applied to both the fibrous and lamellar texture films of all crystal structures. Formulas that relate the angles subtended by diffraction arcs to the distribution angle of the texture axis are presented.

    Notes: Electron diffraction patterns of a sputter-deposited poly crystalline MgO thin film on an SiO2 substrate, of a Ta thin film and of CoCrTa/Cr bilayer films on glass substrates are presented and analyzed based on the theory developed in Paper I [Tang & Laughlin (1996). J. Appl. Cryst. 29, 411–418]. It is found that the MgO film is [001] textured with a distribution angle of 13°. The Ta film is composed both of randomly oriented grains and [011] textured grains. The [011] texture axis distribution angle of the Ta film is determined to be 11° (11{\bar 2}O)CoCrTa/(001)Cr and (10{\bar 1}1)CoCrTa/(011)Cr polycrystalline epitaxy are identified in the CoCrTa/Cr bilayer films. Both the bilayer films have a texture axis distribution angle of 6°.

    Notes: Abstract: Two types of mechanisms are proposed for mound coarsening during unstable epitaxial growth: stochastic, due to deposition noise, and deterministic, due to mass currents driven by surface energy differences. Both yield the relation H=(RWL)2 between the typical mound height W, mound size L, and the film thickness H. An analysis of simulations and experimental data shows that the parameter R saturates to a value which discriminates sharply between stochastic ( ) and deterministic ( ) coarsening. We derive a scaling relation between the coarsening exponent 1/z and the mound-height exponent which, for a saturated mound slope, yields .

    Notes: Abstract. The indoleamine melatonin and the synthetic antiestrogenic drug tamoxifen seem to have similar mechanisms in inhibiting the growth of estrogen receptor positive breast cancer cells. In this study, we compared the ability of these molecules, alone and in combination, in stabilizing microsomal membranes against free radical attack. Hepatic microsomes were obtained from male rats and incubated with or without tamoxifen (50–200 μm), melatonin (1 mm) or both; lipid peroxidation was induced by addition of FeCl3, NADPH and ADP. After oxidative damage, membrane fluidity, measured by fluorescence polarization techniques, decreased whereas malonaldehyde (MDA) and 4-hydroxyalkenals (4-HDA) concentrations increased. Incubation of the microsomes with tamoxifen prior to exposure to free radical generating processes inhibited, in a dose-dependent manner, the increase in membrane rigidity and the rise in MDA+4-HDA levels. When melatonin was added, the efficacy of tamoxifen in preventing membrane rigidity was enhanced. Thus, the IC50s for preventing membrane rigidity and for inhibiting lipid peroxidation obtained for tamoxifen in the presence of melatonin were lower than those obtained with tamoxifen alone. Moreover, tamoxifen (50–200 μm) in the presence of melatonin reduced basal membrane fluidity and MDA+4-HDA levels in microsomes. These synergistic effects of tamoxifen and melatonin in stabilizing biological membranes may be important in protecting membranes from free radical damage.

    Description: Earthquakes are generally known to alter the stress field near seismogenic faults. Observations using YRY-four-gauge borehole strainmeters within Yushu (YSH) borehole near the Ganzi-Yushu fault in eastern Tibetan Plateau shows that the azimuth variation of maximum horizontal stress (SH) first decreased and then increased substantially when the earthquakes occurred during the measurement period from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2018. In this period, 38 earthquakes (M ≥ 3) were detected near the fault and the SH orientation showed a drastic change after the 2010 Ms 7.3 Yushu mainshock. We present a discrete element modelling using Particle Flow Code 2D (PFC2D) to simulate a dynamic fault rupturing process and to use the modelling results for interpretation of the stress reorientation. The modelling reveals that dilatation and compression quadrants are formed around a fault rupturing in strike-slip model, resulting in different spatiotemporal changes of the orientation of maximum horizontal stress (Δθ). The value of Δθ in the compression quadrants shows a sharp drop at the time of coseismic slip, then approaches slowly to an asymptotic value. In the dilatation quadrants, Δθ drops by coseismic slip, then increases sharply and finally reaches a stable value. The modelled Δθ by coseismic fault slip agrees with in-situ observations at YSH borehole during 2010 Ms 7.3 Yushu mainshock. It is also found that, the value of Δθ decreases with increasing distance from the rupturing source. We modelled the effect of fault geometry and host rock properties on the Δθ, and found that structural complexity and off-fault damage by coseismic fault slip have significant impact on the stress field alteration near the rupturing source.

    Description: To solve the problem that integer ambiguity between middle-range reference stations in BDS is difficult to be fixed correctly due to the influence of ionospheric delay error and tropospheric delay error, an algorithm of triple-frequency integer ambiguity resolution between middle-range BDS reference stations was proposed. Firstly, the frequency observations of B2 and B3 were used to determine B2-B3 extra-wide-lane integer ambiguity. Then, B1-B3 wide-lane integer ambiguity was solved by using the closer characteristic of ionospheric delay error between B2-B3 extra-wide-lane and B1-B3 wide-lane combination observation, and B1-B2 wide-lane integer ambiguity can be fixed according to the linear relationship of triple-frequency integer ambiguity. Furthermore, B1-B3 and B1-B2 ionosphere-free combination observation and the decomposable characteristic of the corresponding integer ambiguity were used to estimate narrow-lane integer ambiguity and relative zenith tropospheric delay error, and then narrow-lane integer ambiguity can be finally fixed by search mode. This algorithm is tested by the measured triple-frequency data of BDS CORS network. The results show that triple-frequency carrier phase integer ambiguity between middle-range BDS reference stations can be fixed accurately and effectively with the method. © 2021, Editorial Board of Journal of CUMT.
