Notes: Already for a long time retailers have taken back products. In this paper we explore the factors contributing to the decision of combining vs separating inbound and outbound flows during the return handling process. We do so through a comparative analysis of the operations in nine retailer warehouses, which can be divided into three groups: food retailers, non-food store chains and mail order companies. We identify both aggravating factors and facilitating actions for return handling. Furthermore, we bring about recommendations for practice. At the end we put forward propositions that are useful in feeding studies on return handling efficiency. In particular, we conjecture over the impact that return volume and product diversity have on the decision for combining vs separating the reverse and forward flows.

Notes: In optimized shear plasmas in the Joint European Torus [P. H. Rebut and B. E. Keen, Fusion Technol. 11, 13 (1987)], safety factor (q) profiles with negative magnetic shear are produced by applying lower hybrid (LH) waves during the plasma current ramp-up phase. These plasmas produce a barrier to the electron energy transport. The radius at which the barrier is located increases with the LH wave power. When heated with high power from ion cyclotron resonance heating and neutral beam injection, they can additionally produce transient internal transport barriers (ITBs) seen on the ion temperature, electron density, and toroidal rotation velocity profiles. Due to recent improvements in coupling, q profile control with LH current drive in ITB plasmas with strong combined heating can be explored. These new experiments have led to ITBs sustained for several seconds by the LH wave. Simulations show that the current driven by the LH waves peaks at the ITB location, indicating that it can act in the region of low magnetic shear. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A modified ballistic electron emission microscopy (BEEM) technique using local transport of hot electrons through a buried interface, was successfully applied to study the Al2O3 barrier in the Co/Al2O3/Ru tunnel junction. This technique enabled us to straightforwardly measure an effective barrier height of 1.7 eV and to observe the rise of the barrier height due to continuous current injection into a single point of the junction attributed to charging effects and/or degradation of the barrier structure. Scanning over an area of 510 nm×510 nm showed a spatial inhomogenity of the barrier resulting in different dependencies of the BEEM current on the energy of the injected electrons. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A magnetic "spin filter" tunnel barrier, sandwiched between a nonmagnetic metal and a magnetic metal, is used to create a magnetoresistive tunnel device, somewhat analogous to an optical polarizer-analyzer configuration. The resistance of these trilayer structures depends on the relative magnetization orientation of the spin filter and the ferromagnetic electrode. The spin filtering in this configuration yields a previously unobserved magnetoresistance effect, exceeding 100%. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: : :Soymilk (SM), a potential culture medium for applying conductimetric techniques to evaluate the behavior of probiotic lactobacilli and bifidobacteria was examined. Media LAPTg, LM, and SM was standardized for the growth of Lactobacillus fermentum and Bifidobacterium longum. A dilution of 1/100 for L. fermentum and 1/1 for B. longum were considered optimal to obtain a detection time (DT) between 5 and 10 min. The relationship between the initial number of cells and the DT was linear throughout the incubation period considered (40 h). The effect of temperature (30, 37, and 42 °C) on the metabolic activity of the cells was also determined after 40 h of fermentation. The higher metabolic changes were observed at 42 °C with conductance values from 600 to 800 μS and DT of 5-7 min. Results obtained were confirmed by viable counts.

Notes: Warehousing is becoming more and more a critical activity in the supply chain to outperform competitors on customer service, lead times, and costs. However, if warehousing is to be a source of competitive advantage, then the implementation of a warehouse management information system (WMS) is a necessary condition to achieve efficiently the high performance of warehousing operations required in today's marketplace. A major practical question is then whether a given warehouse should implement a standard or a tailor-made WMS. A standard WMS offers many advantages; it is a proven solution, it is less costly, the implementation lead time is shorter, and the after-sales service is better. On the other hand, a standard WMS remains largely making compromises between the way a warehouse wants to work and the way the system allows the warehouse to work. In certain environments, such compromises might seriously degrade warehouse performance, in which case it then seems better to implement a tailor-made WMS. To answer the above question, we conducted an exploratory field study of warehouses with recently implemented WMSs to first understand the empirical reality and then build up a theory linking the constructs warehouse complexity and warehouse planning and control structure. Warehouse complexity refers to the number and variety of items to be handled, the degree of their interaction, and the number, nature, i.e. technologies used, and variety of processes, determined among others by the warehouse's position in the logistic chain and the nature of its market. Warehouse planning and control structure refers to the management functions that plan, direct, coordinate and control the flow of goods through the warehouse, from the time of receiving to the time of shipping. It is strongly related to the WMS in use. We found that the number of orderlines to be processed per day and the number of stock-keeping units are the two main observable aspects of warehouse complexity; that the more complex the warehouse is, the more tailor-made the planning and control structure should be; that for simple warehouses a standardized planning and control structure suffices; and that the design of a new-to-build warehouse should be carried out in close concert with the design of the warehouse planning and control structure.

Notes: Solid wastes are today one of the worst problems in the word, mainly because of the increase in volume and the high capacity of environmental contamination. The aim of this work is to analyze the possibility of use sawing granite wastes as alternative ceramic raw materials for the production of bricks and roof tiles. Samples were collected from wastes of several granites companies from the northeast region of Brazil. They were submitted to particle size and mineralogical characterization. Some ceramic compositions were prepared with granite waste and submitted to technological tests. The results indicated that the wastes have particle size distribution and mineralogical composition similar to conventional non-plastic ceramic raw materials. These wastes can be used in substitution of conventional raw materials in ceramic formulations in proportions up to 50 per cent. This can be important to save traditional raw materials from the region and decreasing the aggression to the environment.

Notes: The project IDEA - Interactive Database for Energy-efficient Architecture - is a multinational collaborative project to build a European knowledge base on advanced energy conscious building design. At the core of this project are two earlier multimedia developments, the Swiss program DIAS and the German adaptation NESA which present the principles and applications of solar architecture in the respective national contexts. IDEA aims to improve know-how of European professionals and exchange of information between them. The database includes information on exemplary buildings, their technical concepts and on other specific conditions. IDEA presents the existing state of the art in the field of energy-efficient architecture by means of a multimedia database of built examples, an encyclopedia of design concepts and a set of interactive design support tools. The built examples have been selected from around Europe. IDEA assembles technical information on materials and energy-related standards and regulations and provides climatic data from all relevant European regions.

Notes: This paper describes the typical specifications and features of a novel low-cost and high-performance universal transducer interface (UTI). The easy-to-use interface enables fast prototyping of systems with capacitive sensors, platinum resistors, thermistors, resistive bridges and potentiometers. It is shown that a high accuracy and reliability can be obtained by applying a combination of advanced techniques, such as, auto-calibration, advanced chopping and dynamic element matching. Examples of smart sensor systems, using the UTI and the popular microcontrollers, Intel 87C51FX and PIC16C73, have been presented.
