Description: Archaefructaceae is proposed as a new basal angiosperm family of herbaceous aquatic plants. This family consists of the fossils Archaefructus liaoningensis and A. sinensis sp. nov. Complete plants from roots to fertile shoots are known. Their age is a minimum of 124.6 million years from the Yixian Formation, Liaoning, China. They are a sister clade to all angiosperms when their characters are included in a combined three-gene molecular and morphological analysis. Their reproductive axes lack petals and sepals and bear stamens in pairs below conduplicate carpels.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Sun, Ge -- Ji, Qiang -- Dilcher, David L -- Zheng, Shaolin -- Nixon, Kevin C -- Wang, Xinfu -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2002 May 3;296(5569):899-904.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Research Center of Palaeontology, Jilin University, Changchun 130026, China. sunge@jlu.edu.cn〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11988572" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Haplotype-based methods offer a powerful approach to disease gene mapping, based on the association between causal mutations and the ancestral haplotypes on which they arose. As part of The SNP Consortium Allele Frequency Projects, we characterized haplotype patterns across 51 autosomal regions (spanning 13 megabases of the human genome) in samples from Africa, Europe, and Asia. We show that the human genome can be parsed objectively into haplotype blocks: sizable regions over which there is little evidence for historical recombination and within which only a few common haplotypes are observed. The boundaries of blocks and specific haplotypes they contain are highly correlated across populations. We demonstrate that such haplotype frameworks provide substantial statistical power in association studies of common genetic variation across each region. Our results provide a foundation for the construction of a haplotype map of the human genome, facilitating comprehensive genetic association studies of human disease.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Gabriel, Stacey B -- Schaffner, Stephen F -- Nguyen, Huy -- Moore, Jamie M -- Roy, Jessica -- Blumenstiel, Brendan -- Higgins, John -- DeFelice, Matthew -- Lochner, Amy -- Faggart, Maura -- Liu-Cordero, Shau Neen -- Rotimi, Charles -- Adeyemo, Adebowale -- Cooper, Richard -- Ward, Ryk -- Lander, Eric S -- Daly, Mark J -- Altshuler, David -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2002 Jun 21;296(5576):2225-9.
