Notes: Molecular beam epitaxy of rare-earth-doped CaF2 layers has already been demonstrated. Optical waveguiding can be obtained if the refractive index variation due to the rare-earth doping is high enough. To tailor separately the refractive index profile and the active ion profile in the layer, the former should be modified by a passive impurity. This letter demonstrates that passive waveguides can be obtained in CaF2 epitaxial layers by the introduction of moderate concentrations of Pb. Monomode planar waveguides with a steplike index variation ranging from 0.2% to 1.2% (relative to CaF2) have been grown and characterized, paving the way for the independent engineering of refractive index and active center distributions in optical active waveguide devices made of this kind of material. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: CdTe layers were grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) on different substrates like sapphire, GaAs, and CdTe wafers. The growth was carried out at the temperature 340 °C and time in the range of 2–4 h using dimethyl-cadmium and diisopropil-tellurium as precursors. The layers were studied by scanning electron microscopy, Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy, and high resolution low-temperature photoluminescence spectroscopy. The surface morphology and RBS and PL spectra of CdTe MOVPE layers are reported and the substrate effect on the layer properties is demonstrated. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: GaN photoconductive detectors have been fabricated on sapphire substrates by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy and gas-source molecular beam epitaxy on Si (111) substrates. The photodetectors showed high photoconductor gains, a very nonlinear response with illuminating power, and an intrinsic nonexponential photoconductance recovery process. A novel photoconductor gain mechanism is proposed to explain such results, based on a modulation of the conductive volume of the layer. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This note describes some of the safety and security concerns posed by the transportation of highly enriched uranium (HEU) from a nuclear research reactor located in Bogota (Colombia) to a port on the Colombian Caribbean coast. The operation was made at a moment of extremely high guerilla activity in Colombia, so that the decision-problem belongs in the extension of risk analysis known as threat analysis. By invoking a principle of dispreference for probability based on the concept of stochastic dominance, a qualitative risk comparison was made between the road and air alternatives.

Notes: We report here the molecular organization of the capsular locus (cap1 ) of the type 1 pneumococcus. This locus is located between dexB and aliA and flanked by IS1167 insertion elements. Sequence analysis showed that the cluster contains 11 genes (cap1A to cap1K ), which are apparently arranged as a single transcriptional unit. The presence of a functional promoter (cap1p ) located upstream of cap1A has been demonstrated and the transcription start point was mapped by primer-extension analysis. A 14.3 kb fragment containing the genes cap1ABCDEFGHIJK and including cap1p was sufficient to allow the synthesis of a type 1 capsule in Streptococcus pneumoniae. An internal deletion of cap1E leads to an unencapsulated phenotype demonstrating that this gene is essential for capsular production. The cap1K gene has been expressed in Escherichia coli resulting in UDP-glucose dehydrogenase (UDP-GlcDH) activity. Moreover, this gene was able to restore the synthesis of type 3 capsule when cloned into a plasmid and introduced by transformation into S. pneumoniae cap3A mutants deficient in UDP-GlcDH. In marked contrast with what was previously thought, recombination between cap1K and cap3A does occur. We provide data on the molecular mechanism that leads to the formation of binary encapsulated pneumococcal cells, i.e. strains that simultaneously produce type 1 and type 3 capsules. Downstream of cap1K, one truncated and three complete open reading frames homologous to those involved in the biosynthesis of dTDP-rhamnose, a monosaccharide that does not participate in the formation of type 1 polysaccharide, have been identified in all the clinical strains of type 1 pneumococcus tested. Our results provide new insights into the generation of capsule diversity in pneumococci.

Notes: Previous studies have indicated that the rate of photorespiration in C4 plants is low or negligible. In this study, wild-type and mutant leaves of the C4 plant Amaranthus edulis were treated with the glutamine synthetase inhibitor, phosphinothricin and the glycine decarboxylase inhibitor, aminoacetonitrile, at different concentrations of CO2. The time course of ammonia accumulation in leaves of the wild type was compared with a mutant lacking phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase activity (EC 4.1.1.31), and with three different mutants that accumulated glycine. The increase in the concentration of ammonia in the leaves, stimulated by the treatments was used as a measurement of the rate of photorespiration in C4 plants. The application of glutamine and glycine maintained the rate of photorespiratory ammonia production for a longer period in the wild type, and increased the rate in a mutant lacking phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase suggesting that there was a lack of amino donors in these plants. The calculated rate of photorespiration in Amaranthus edulis wild-type leaves when the supply of amino donors was enough to maintain the photorespiratory nitrogen flow, accounted for approximately 6% of the total net photosynthetic CO2 assimilation rate. In a mutant lacking phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase, however, this rate increased to 48%, when glutamine was fed to the leaf, a value higher than that found in some C3 plants. In mutants of Amaranthus edulis that accumulated glycine, the rate of photorespiration was reduced to 3% of the total net CO2 assimilation rate. The rate of ammonia produced during photorespiration was 60% of the total produced by all metabolic reactions in the leaves. The data suggests that photorespiration is an active process in C4 plants, which can play an important role in photosynthetic metabolism in these plants.

Notes: A prospective study was carried out to determine the prevalence rates of microsporidiosis and other enteroparasites in HIV-positive children in the Madrid area. HIV-positive pediatric patients from three hospitals were entrolled in the study. A total of 293 samples (158 stool and 127 urine) were collected from 83 children whose mean age was 6.3 years and hed a mean CD4 count of 504.7/mm3 (range 1-2,220/mm3), 48 of whom suffered diarrhea at the time of the study. Microsporidia indentification was investigated in stool and unrine samples using Weber's chromotrope-based strain, IIF and PCR species-specific tests. Enteric parasites were identified in 32.5% of the children. Cryptosporidium sp. was the most common parasite encuntered (14.4%), followed by Blastocytis sp. (9.6%) and Giardia duodenalis (8.4%). Microsoridia was only found in the stools of one child (1.2% of total and 2% of those with diarrhea) and Enterocytozoon bieneusi was demonstrated by PCR. The patient was 10 years old, Presented non-chronic diarrhea and his CD4 count was 298/mm3. These date differ from those previously reported by us in HIV-positive adults (13.9%) in the same area, although this group showed more severely depressed CD4 lymphocyte counts than children. New epidemiological studies should be carried out to elucidate whether additional risk factors exist betwen these groups.
