    Notes: Five species of halophytes were sampled in the salt marshes of the Tagus estuary, dried, ground and digested. They were further extracted with ethanol and the extracts passed through weak and strong cationic ion-exchange resins, purified through TLC and submitted to pyrolysis mass spectrometry and HPLC-ICP/MS. Arsenic content and hydride-forming arsenic species were verified, in each step, by GF-AA and HG-QFAA. A high content of arsenic was found in the samples of halophytes studied, both di- and tri-methylated arsenic compounds being present. A considerable fraction of this arsenic content seems to be refractory to hydride generation. Moreover, the arsenic fraction found seems to have the same ion-exchange behaviour as the refractory fractions formerly studied in estuarine water.A partial characterization of these structures by pyrolysis-GC-MS suggests the presence of arsenobetaine and arsenocholine compounds. Furthermore, HPLC-ICP/MS data seem to confirm the presence of these compounds. In addition, the latter hyphenated technique strongly suggests the presence of a number of other organoarsenicals including tetramethylarsonium (TMAs), trimethylarsine oxide (TMAO), cacodylate (DMA) and possibly an arsenosugar-type compound. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: The explosive performance of ∊-CL-20 was found to be approximately 14% greater than HMX as determined by cylinder expansion and tantalum plate acceleration experiments. This makes it the most powerful explosive ever tested at small volume expansions of the detonation products. In general CL-20 is more sensitive than HMX. However, the sensitivity of CL-20 to one-dimensional shock loading was found to be similar to HMX.

    Description: Multiple endocrine neoplasia-type 1 (MEN1) is an autosomal dominant familial cancer syndrome characterized by tumors in parathyroids, enteropancreatic endocrine tissues, and the anterior pituitary. DNA sequencing from a previously identified minimal interval on chromosome 11q13 identified several candidate genes, one of which contained 12 different frameshift, nonsense, missense, and in-frame deletion mutations in 14 probands from 15 families. The MEN1 gene contains 10 exons and encodes a ubiquitously expressed 2.8-kilobase transcript. The predicted 610-amino acid protein product, termed menin, exhibits no apparent similarities to any previously known proteins.     Description: Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) supports growth and survival of dopaminergic (DA) neurons. A replication-defective adenoviral (Ad) vector encoding human GDNF injected near the rat substantia nigra was found to protect DA neurons from the progressive degeneration induced by the neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) injected into the striatum. Ad GDNF gene therapy reduced loss of DA neurons approximately threefold 6 weeks after 6-OHDA lesion, as compared with no treatment or injection of Ad lacZ or Ad mGDNF (encoding a biologically inactive deletion mutant GDNF).     Notes: The particle sizes and their size distributions of latexes from the dispersion polymerization of styrene using a small amount of ω-methoxy poly(ethylene oxide)n undecyl-α-methacrylate macromonomer (PEO-R-MA-40) as a polymerizable stabilizer in ethanol-water media have been studied. Monodisperse or/and nearly monodisperse latex particles from 0.1 to 1 μm in diameter were readily obtained. The diameter of latex particles follows the relationship Dvad ∝ θ0.33 [PEO-R-MA-40]-0.60 [styrene]01.02 [AIBN]o-0.09, where θ is the fractional conversion of styrene. Except for the styrene concentration dependency, this relationship is in excellent agreement with the model developed by Paine11 and modified by Kawaguchi et al.13 When the surface composition of the grafted PEO macromonomer on the latex particles exceeded 16% as analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the particles were nearly monodisperse. In terms of polymerization, this occurred around 18% conversion of styrene. Beyond this critical state of polymerization, the latex particles grew bigger with more PEO macromonomer-styrene copolymers situated on the particle surface.     Notes: A series of novel structured latex particles with interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) cores and glassy SAN shells were developed in an attempt to investigate the feasibility of these polymers as both toughening and damping agents in thermoplastics. The IPN cores were composed of one impact part (polybutadiene based) and one damping part (acrylic based, with Tg around +10°C). The particle morphologies of these polymers were determined by TEM. The glass transitions and mechanical behavior of the polymers were characterized from DMS. The effect of different components on the final core/shell particle morphologies and mechanical properties was studied. The mechanical behavior of core/shell particles with IPN cores was also compared with that of separate core/shell and multilayered core/shell particles. In addition, normal core/shell synthesis (rubbery part first then the glassy part) and inverted core/shell synthesis (glassy part first then the rubbery part) were performed to provide another access for morphology control. It was found that the core/shell latex particles with poly(butyl acrylate) based copolymers are more miscible than poly(ethylhexyl methacrylate)-based copolymers. The high grafting efficiency of poly(butyl acrylate) plays an important role in governing phase miscibility. The latex particles synthesized by the inverted core/shell mode showed higher miscibility than the normal synthesized ones. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: ---The oxidation and reduction potentials of a series of related even non-alternant derivatives of 7,14-disubstituted acenaphth[1,2-k] fluoranthenes, and also fluoranthene, 7,10-diphenylfluoranthene and 8,9-dihydrodiindeno[1,2-j;2′,1′-] fluoranthene, were determined in organic solvents by cyclic voltammetry. The effects of steric hindrance on conjugation of the substituents with the central polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon nucleus were evaluated. The semi-empirical molecular orbital calculation programs OMEGAMO, Extended Hückel, AM1 and PM3 were used to obtain optimal geometries and calculated HOMO and LUMO energies. As a further refinement, COSMO solvation was included in the AM1 calculations. The redox properties were correlated with data derived from the various semi-empirical calculations and the quality of these correlations is discussed. Inclusion of solvation energies in the computed molecular orbital energies results in a significant improvement in the correlation between observed and calculated oxidation potentials. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: A high-performance liquid chromatographic method has been developed for the analysis of the intermediate imines and end products in an asymmetric isomerization route toward optically active amines. Separation of the imine enantiomers was performed on commercially available Chiralcel OD-H, Chiralcel OJ, and Chiralpak AD chiral stationary phases. All substituted imine enantiomers could be readily resolved with selectivities (α) higher than 1.10 using the Chiralpak AD column. By derivatization with ring-substituted benzaldehydes, aromatic amines were converted into Schiff base derivatives and the enantiopurity of these amines was determined.
