    Notes: Abstract Precursor solutions for zirconia films on soda lime silica glass substrate were prepared from zirconium oxychloride octahydrate (ZOO) and acetic acid (HOAC) maintaining the mol ratios, [HOAC]/[ZOO]=2, 4, 6, 8 and 10. A characteristic UV absorption band at ∼280 nm in the ∼120h aged precursor solutions was identified for acetate group of the zirconium acetato complexed species. The presence of acetate ligand coordinated with either ZrOOH+ or [Zr4(OH)8]8+ or with both was predicted by the studies of UV spectra of aged solutions and FTIR spectra of unbaked films on silicon wafer. Dipping technique was followed for film formation. Thicknesses and refractive indices of the baked (450°±5°C) films were in the ranges 1818±20 Å and 1.702–1.762 respectively. The positive SIMS experiment on two typical films baked at 450°±5°C derived from the precursors with [HOAC]/[ZOO]=2 and 6, detected the ionic species, Zr+, ZrO+, ZrO 2 + , Na+, Ca+, Fe+, H+ while the negative SIMS detected O− and Cl−. The relative contents of the ionic species with respect to Zr+ were dependent on the acid content of the precursors. Reflection (%) of the baked films in the UV region was also dependent on the acid content of the precursors. Electron diffraction pattern of the typical baked film derived from the precursor with [HOAC]/[ZOO]=2 exhibited meta-stable cubic phase of zirconia and the grains were found to be elongated (aspect ratio, 2.00–2.33).

    Notes: The objective of this article is to define and validate a mathematical model that desribes the physical and biological processes occurring in a trickle-bed air biofilter for waste gas treatment. This model considers a two-phase system, quasi-steady-state processes, uniform bacterial population, and one limiting substrate. The variation of the specific surface area with bacterial growth is included in the model, and its effect on the biofilter performance is analyzed. This analysis leads to the conclusion that excessive accumulation of biomass in the reactor has a negative effect on contaminant removal efficiency. To solve this problem, excess biomass is removed via full media fluidization and backwashing of the biofilter. The backwashing technique is also incorporated in the model as a process variable. Experimental data from the biodegradation of toluene in a pilot system with four packed-bed reactors are used to validate the model. Once the model is calibrated with the estimation of the unknown parameters of the system, it is used to simulate the biofilter performance for different operating conditions.     Notes: Flow through the spiral casing of a hydraulic turbine was analyzed. Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations were solved using a finite element method. The physical domain was divided into a number of hexahedral elements which are isoparametrically mapped onto standard cubic elements. Numerical integration for the unsteady momentum equation is performed over such hexahedral elements to obtain a provisional velocity field. Compliance with the mass conservation equation and determination of the pressure correction are accomplished through an iterative procedure. The velocity distribution inside the spiral casing corroborates the results available in literature. The static pressure at the midplane generally decreases from the outside wall towards the exit of the spiral casing. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Description: In this paper, we present a multi-threaded approach for the automatic load balancing of adaptive finite element (FE) meshes. The platform of our choice is the EARTH multi-threaded system which offers sufficient capabilities to tackle this problem. We implement the question phase of FE applications on triangular meshes, and exploit the EARTH token mechanism to automatically balance the resulting irregular and highly nonuniform workload. We discuss the results of our experiments on EARTH-SP2, an implementation of EARTH on the IBM SP2, with different load balancing strategies that are built into the runtime system.

    Description: Mesh adaption is a powerful tool for efficient unstructured-grid computations but causes load imbalance among processors on a parallel machine. We present a novel method called PLUM to dynamically balance the processor workloads with a global view. This paper presents the implementation and integration of all major components within our dynamic load balancing strategy for adaptive grid calculations. Mesh adaption, repartitioning, processor assignment, and remapping are critical components of the framework that must be accomplished rapidly and efficiently so as not to cause a significant overhead to the numerical simulation. A data redistribution model is also presented that predicts the remapping cost on the SP2. This model is required to determine whether the gain from a balanced workload distribution offsets the cost of data movement. Results presented in this paper demonstrate that PLUM is an effective dynamic load balancing strategy which remains viable on a large number of processors.

    Description: Understanding the interplay between machines and problems is key to obtaining high performance on parallel machines. This paper investigates the interplay between programming paradigms and communication capabilities of parallel machines. In particular, we explicate the communication capabilities of the IBM SP-2 distributed-memory multiprocessor and the SGI PowerCHALLENGEarray symmetric multiprocessor. Two benchmark problems of bitonic sorting and Fast Fourier Transform are selected for experiments. Communication-efficient algorithms are developed to exploit the overlapping capabilities of the machines. Programs are written in Message-Passing Interface for portability and identical codes are used for both machines. Various data sizes and message sizes are used to test the machines' communication capabilities. Experimental results indicate that the communication performance of the multiprocessors are consistent with the size of messages. The SP-2 is sensitive to message size but yields a much higher communication overlapping because of the communication co-processor. The PowerCHALLENGEarray is not highly sensitive to message size and yields a low communication overlapping. Bitonic sorting yields lower performance compared to FFT due to a smaller computation-to-communication ratio.
