    Notes: An error estimate for the finite element method is presented in this paper. The error is identified as the response to a set of residual forces, and a complementary analysis provides an upper bound estimate of the global energy of the error. The inequality proposed by Babuška and Miller1 is then employed to bound the error in stress and displacement at a point. The formula is derived for two-dimensional elasticity, but the procedure is general; and can be applied to three-dimensional and other problems. Numerical experiments using the procedure are carried out and the results are given for the four-node bilinear compatible element and plane stress.

    Notes: The reduction of stress concentration around a circular hole in a dynamically loaded plate by introducing auxiliary holes around the original hole is studied numerically. The solution of this plane stress problem is carried out in the Laplace transformed domain with the aid of the boundary-element method, and subsequently the time domain response is obtained by numerically inverting the transformed solution. Numerical examples are presented which demonstrate a stress reduction as high as 18 per pent by the introduction of two auxiliary holes in the loading direction for the uniaxial case.

    Notes: The formation of large gas bubbles at submerged orifices is investigated numerically with a two-dimensional, transient, finite difference model using a volume fraction specification to track the movement of the gas-liquid interface. Experimentally observed features of large-bubble formation such as the initial toroidal shape of the bubbles and the penetration of liquid down the pipe centreline are well predicted by the model. The expected oscillatory nature of growth is also observed. The bubble departure volume corresponds to experiments and to the model of Davidson and Schuler. At present the simulations do not extend far enough to investigate multiple-bubble ejection and important bubble-to-bubble interactions during growth and after departure.

    Notes: A numerical investigation of the flow of two immiscible stratified fluids under an isolated keel has been undertaken. The investigation utilized the two-dimensional Euler equations for incompressible flow, and the solution of these equations has been obtained by using the well-known finite volume marker and cell approach. Experimental drag-force measurements are also presented for a family of two-dimensional topographic models of fixed height with increasing surface slopes in a two-layer density system. The range of flow speeds explored covers the Froude number range from subcritical to fully supercritical. The drag force measurements are augmented by detailed observations of the interface distortion. The results clearly show large drag increases arising from the internal wave systems generated in the stratified flow. Very good agreement has been found between the experimental and numerical results for both the interface shape between the two fluids and the drag force on a variety of keels.

    Notes: A major limitation of the boundary element method (BEM) for the solution of electrical potential problems is the long computational time required. However, a large portion of the calculations involved can be viewed as being parallel in nature and can therefore be computed concurrently. This paper makes an effort to increase the efficiency of the BEM process using transputer-based multiprocessor computing techniques. The algorithms developed may equally well be applied to any multiprocessor system. The application selected to demonstrate the technique is the solution of an electrostatic problem governed by a two-dimensional Laplace equation.A parallel algorithm for problem setup and field extraction using BEM is designed and implemented on a transputer array. Special attention is directed to the utilization of the parallel processors to achieve maximum efficiency. The analysis in this work concentrates on the communication strategies for passing data between processors as well as a consideration of the workload attributed to each processor.The parallel algorithms were implemented using 3L Parallel Fortran; however, the choice of topology for the overall BEM implementation was limited by the fact that certain parts of the algorithm could only utilize a pipeline configuration of processors. Comprehensive results for the parallel BEM algorithm are given and they are encouraging, indicating that parallel processing has much to offer when applied to the boundary element method.

    Notes: It is shown that a triangular membrane finite element with vertex ‘drilling rotations’ which was developed in earlier publications is, in fact, a correct implementation of a variational principle. The existence of a variational principle is a crucial factor which places the earlier work on a secure theoretical foundation.     Notes: A posteriori error indicators for strain energy error in finite-element solutions have recently been shown to be effective. A popular error indicator, usually denoted by η, makes use of ‘error energy’, i.e. strain energy associated with the difference between the conventional element stresses σ and a smoothed stress field constructed from σ. It is intended that η be constructed by summing element contributions and that it be applied at the global level. The present study suggests that an error indicator applicable at the element level can be obtained by combining an element value of η with information about stress gradient and strain energy density. It is also shown how the stress gradient information can be used to obtain more accurate stresses at mesh boundaries.

    Notes: A simple a posteriori local error estimator for time discretization in structural dynamic analysis is presented. It is derived from the difference of the solutions between an ordinary integration method (the Newmark scheme) and another higher-order one which assumes that the derivatives of accelerations vary linearly within each time step. It may be obtained directly without resolving new equations, so the additional computational cost is small and the implementation is convenient. Furthermore, it is shown that this error estimator may also be obtained by Taylor expansion or by a post-processing technique. Accordingly, an adaptive time-stepping procedure, which automatically adjusts the time-step size so that the local error at each time step is within a prescribed accuracy, is described. Numerical examples, including two single-DOF problems, a two-DOF problem and a multi-DOF model, are presented. The results show that the presented local error estimator is simple, reliable and accurate.

    Notes: Calculation of transverse shear stresses in Mindlin plates by the use of the equilibrium equations and the displacement solutions from either finite-strip or finite-element analyses is considered. It is shown that at least quadratic interpolation of displacements should be used for this purpose. Also, a difference in the shear stress distributions obtainable across the plate thickness under linear and geometrically nonlinear analyses is explained.
