Notes: Abstract The behavior of efficiency in the stochastic DEA model is examined here in terms of the influence curve approach which quantifies the influence of observed data on the empirical fit of the production frontier. Data influence is analyzed here through robustness. Two types of robustness and sensitivity issues are analyzed here in terms of (a) a new class of minimax measures, and (b) a set nonlinear efficiency measures and it is shown through empirical applications that in suitable cases these measures outperform the conventional ones.

Notes: Abstract The Krichever-Novikov (KN) global operator formalism is applied to construct a topological conformal field theory on a compact Riemann surface from an N=2 super-conformal field theory. The topological version of the KN algebra is derived and the BRST charge is shown to be genus-dependent in this formulation. This leads to an interesting cohomology structure for the physical subspace of the Hilbert space.

Notes: Abstract The Neveu-Schwarz-Ramond type II closed superstring is considered to evolve in a curved space-time manifold. The Krichever-Novikov global operator formalism is used to construct the generators of a super-conformal algebra on a Riemann surface Σ. The computation for the quantum algebra of these generators is explicitly presented. It is shown that the theory is free from super-conformal anomalies if the target manifold is ten dimensional and satisfies the Ricci flatness condition.

Notes: Summary Heterotrophic dinitrogen fixation in root associations of successional stages of the tropical mangrove plant community at the Ganges river estuary in India was investigated by excised-root acetylene reduction assay, and enumeration and identification of diazotrophic bacteria from sediment, root and tidal water samples. High to very high rates of nitrogenase activity (64–130 nmol C2H4/g dry root/h) were associated with washed excised roots of seven common early-successional mangrove species at the inundated swamps. Declining, late-successional mangroves at the occasionally inundated ridges had considerably lower values and the “declined” mangroves and other non-littoral species at embankment protected highlands had very low to insignificant values of root nitrogenase activity. Total and inorganic nitrogen contents of the mangrove sediments were low and were positively related to the stages of physiographic succession. Plant-associated sediments of particularly the old formation swamps had very high C/N ratios. Nine isolates of nitrogen-fixing bacteria belonging to all known O2 response groups were distinguished from a large population of diazotrophs associated with roots of mangroves and other associate plant species of the community. The isolates differed with respect to their N2-fixation efficiency and halotolerance in pure culture. There was no specificity of any of the bacterial isolates to any of the plant species of the community but a higher number of efficient isolates were seen to be associated with mangroves at the swampy succession. Sediment-free tidal water also contained a large population of microaerophilic and anaerobic N2-fixing bacteria.

Notes: Abstract A new formulation of garnet-biotite Fe−Mg exchange thermometer has been developed through statistical regression of the reversed experimental data of Ferry and Spear. Input parameters include available thermo-chemical data for quaternary Fe−Mg−Ca−Mn garnet solid solution and for excess free energy terms, associated with mixing of Al and Ti, in octahedral sites, in biotite solid solution. The regression indicates that Fe−Mg mixing in biotite approximates a symmetrical regular solution model showing positive deviation from ideality withW FeMg bi =1073±490 cal/mol. ΔH r and ΔS r for the garnet-biotite exchange equilibrium were derived to be 4301 cal and 1.85 cal respectively. The resultant thermometer gives consistent results for rocks with a much wider compositional range than can be accommodated by earlier formulations.

Notes: Summary A soybean nodulin cDNA clone (E41) hybrid-selected mRNA for three in vitro translation products with apparent molecular weights of 26 kDa, 25 kDa and 24 kDa. Based on Southern analysis of soybean genomic DNA, combined with mapping and sequencing of genomic clones, we identified four genes that are related to E41, one of which was identified to be the previously characterized N-20 gene. Our data indicate the linkage of three of the genes, of which one is a truncated version and suggest that they originated by gene duplication combined with deletion and conversion. The genes are highly expressed and we postulate that the sequence conservation in the 5′ and 3′ flanking regions of all four genes, has a functional role in their expression. Hybrid-selected translation products of E41 are not immunoprecipitable with antibody to the soluble fraction of nodules suggesting that they are membrane associated. The N-20 gene, which is a member of this gene subfamily, showed sequence similarity to four previously characterized nodulin genes and a phylogenetic tree is proposed based on the extent of sequence similarity.

Notes: Abstract Intranuclear cascading mechanism one of the important non-linear effects in high energy nucleusnucleus collisions is investigated. The data on multiplicity (n s ) and pseudorapidity (η) distributions of shower particles produced by32S and16O at 200A GeV,16O at 60A GeV,28Si at 14.5A GeV and He at ≈140A GeV are presented and compared with the string model VENUS, which takes into account the cascade interactions of secondary particles. The effect of the intranuclear collisions on the distributions of 〈η〉 versus 〈n s 〉 is discussed for all the beams.

Notes: Abstract In accordance with high incidence of AIDS cases, there is an epidemic growth of its literature. This unprecedented growth of literature calls for serious scientometric study. Such a study will not only help the scientometrists, information scientists, but also will be very useful to the related research workers. With this in view an attempt has been made to analyse AIDS literature published during the period 1976–1986 to identify its international channel of communication, medium of communication, contributing countries, authorship trends etc. This study is based on data printed in a source document entitledCollected Papers on AIDS Research, 1976–1986 published by BIOSIS which is a retrospective bibliography incorporating valuable references to research on AIDS from 9,000 source titles monitored in BIOSIS data base. The findings of this study have also been compared to those ofWyatt andSelf, Filardo andLancaster.

Notes: Abstract There is a rapid growth of cancer literature. Thousands of papers are being regularly published every year not only in speciality journals, but also in journals of other disciplines. Citation studies are nowadays considered a major basis of science indicators for ascertaining the importance of a scientific journal and that of the published articles on a particular subject. In oncological research the journalCancer is considered as one of the top most journals and is universally well known for its high standard and excellence. In this paper an attempt has been made to find out the importance of all the articles published in it for a particular year. Side by side bibliometric analysis was made to ascertain various other aspects like time lag between publication and first citation of articles, average citation time, subject scattering and identification of most important journals in the field etc. It is believed that this study would be of help to the working oncologists, librarians and information scientists to assess the importance of articles published in a top ranking journal of cancer and also that of different journals publishing oncological research results.
