Notes: Summary Polyaniline and polyalkylaniline perchlorates were prepared by oxidative coupling polymerization of anilines by the use of copper(II) perchlorate in acetonitrile as an oxidant. The corresponding polymer bases obtained by treating the perchlorates with alkaline solution were soluble in dimethylsulfoxide and partly soluble in tetrahydrofuran. The molecular weights of the THF-soluble components were 2000–6000. The charge transport of the perchlorates is influenced by the chain length and the steric effect of alkyl substituents.

Notes: Abstract Molar excess enthalpies H E at 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure were determined for 12 binary liquid mixtures, 1-fluoropentane, 1-fluorohexane, or 1-fluorononane + a non-polar solvent (hexane, cyclohexane, benzene, or tetrachloromethane) and were interpreted by the DISQUAC group contribution model. 1-Fluoroalkane + n-alkane mixtures are characterized by two types of groups or contact surfaces, fluorine (F) and alkane (CH3, CH2), the remaining mixtures by the additional contact surfaces of the solvents (C6H12 C6H6, or CCl4). The interchange energies, entirely dispersive, of the alkane-solvent contacts were determined independently from the study of solvent-alkane mixtures. The dispersive F-alkane parameters were assumed to equal the parameters of perfluoroalkanes + n-alkanes. The shape of the H E curves of 1-fluorolkane + polarizable solvent (C6H6, CCl4) mixtures are best reproduced by the model when the quasi-chemical F-solvent parameters are assumed to equal zero. The quasi-chemical F-alkane (the same for n-alkanes and cyclohexane) and the dispersive F-solvent parameters were estimated in this work. The 1-fluoroalkane solutions in C6H6 or CCl4 exhibit the characteristic features of polar solute + polarizable solvent mixtures, viz., the deviations from the ideality are less positive than in alkanes and the experimental H E curves are strongly asymmetrical.

Notes: Abstract We apply a method invented by Luttinger to obtain an asymptotic expansion in powers of 1/T forE[e −TF(τ)]. τ is theproportion of local time andE is the expectation for a time-homogeneous Markov process withN states. The result extends the large-deviation result of Donsker and Varadhan by providing a complete expansion as opposed to only the leading term.

Notes: Abstract A radiometric microassay has been developed to measure the indole-3-acetic acid oxidizing activity of plant peroxidases. This was based in a reappraisal of the pre-existing assay of the indole-3-acetic acid oxidase activity based in the decarboxylation of indole-3-[1-14C]acetic acid. The improvement consists in the measurement of the indole-3-acetic acid decarboxylation by the determination of the decrease of radioactivity due to the decarboxylation of indole-3-[1-14C]acetic acid carried out in open vessels, during the steady-state (peroxidative) phase of the oxidation rate. In contrast to the previously reported radiometric methods, the reliability (kinetic stoichiometry of the decarboxylation) of our microassay was studied, and it was supported by the fact that, for steady-state conditions, a kinetic correlation between the disappearance of labelled substrate and the appearance of the first decarboxylate product takes place. The sensitivity and reproducibility of the improved assay was tested with crude protein samples taken from cellular homogenates of lupin hypocotyls.

Notes: Summary In this paper we formualte a master equation approach describing a D+T thermonuclear plasma in a lumped phase space. From the first moments of this master equation and performing the pass to the continuous limit the evolution equations for the expected phase space ion densities emerge. Also we have obtained the evolution equations of the equal time correlation and covariance functions. Finally we have deduced the hydrodynamic equations that arise from a master equation approach.

Notes: Abstract A toxicological assessment of water quality conditions (30 physical-chemical parameters and a screening of organic pollutants by reverse-phase HPLC) was performed in Algeciras Bay, Cadiz, Spain in relation to problems in six floating ponds for gilthead (Sparus auratus) growth. The study was completed with a short-termArtemia toxicity test, and the measurement of heavy metal concentrations in molluscs from different sites of the Bay. Cadmium, lead, and cyanide at sublethal toxic concentrations were found in most of the analyzed samples, and very high concentrations of ammonia, phenols, nitrites, cyanide, and sulphide were found in some sampling sites. In addition, seven water samples showed toxicity onArtemia. The problems in the floating ponds (low growth rates, high mortality, and infectious diseases) can be related, in part, to the very bad water quality conditions.

Notes: Abstract Magnetic disaccommodation is investigated for ferrous ferrites with normal spinel structure. This study shows the presence of a new relaxation process in the temperature region IV (≃285 K) that has not been detected in inverse spinels. A numerical analysis of the isochronal spectra reveals that it is composed of two simple Debye processes with activation energies close to 0.75 eV and 0.80 eV, and preexponential factors 3×10−13 s. This relaxation is attributed to the formation of an induced anisotropy due to jumps of B-Fe ions into vacancies (as process III), but in presence of a divalent cation occupying an A-site.

Notes: Abstract The reduction of 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) by grapevine cells cultured in suspension was studied in order to assess the reliability of using TTC reduction as a measure of cell viability. Similar to the reduction observed in animals cells, TTC can be reduced in grapevine cells by the cytochrome respiratory path of the mitochondria, although it is mostly reduced (about 72 %) by the alternative respiratory path sensitive to salicylhydroxamic acid. Engagement of the alternative path in TTC reduction was calculated through the √Valt plot, and was established to be 89 %.

Notes: Abstract Addition of the l-proline analogue l-azetidine 2-carboxylic acid to growing cultures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. ellipsoideus promoted fast deactivation of the general aminoacid permease, measured as l-valine uptake, without an immediate decrease in the growth rate. Cells preincubated with the analogue for 3 h were unable to restore either growth ability or general aminoacid permease activity in analogue-free medium. Eadie-Hofstee plots of l-valine uptake in the presence of the analogue are consistent with a strong reduction in the number of active molecules of the general amino-acid permease located in the plasma membrane. Inhibitory effects on protein synthesis were seen after preincubations of the yeast with the analogue for 3 h although a 30 min preincubation had no effect.

Notes: Summary Different approaches to the interpretation of solvent effects on reactions between ionic reactants are analysed, taking as a basis the kinetic data corresponding to the sulphite-hexacyanoferrate(III) and peroxodisulphate-hexacyanoferrate(III) oxidations. It is concluded that the approach based on the use of solvent parameters is the more promising, although knowledge of the transfer chemical potentials of the reactants may also be useful in the interpretation of kinetic behaviour.
