    Notes: Abstract The use of a multivariate procedure is demonstrated in the analysis of a survey of various firesafety actions and beliefs in a college student population. A canonical correlation analysis identified three significant factors and revealed that performing a safety inspection of one's residence for potential hazards was associated with beliefs in one's personal efficacy in handling fire situations, whereas engaging in more emergency-related actions such as checking to see if one's smoke detector was working properly, knowing the emergency telephone number, having it posted by the telephone, and knowing two exits out of each area of the home was related to beliefs of susceptibility and seriousness concerning fires. A third factor revealed an association between having a sprinkler system (but not a fire extinguisher) present in the place of residence, vacuuming the dust from a smoke detector, and having ever practiced an emergency escape with beliefs reflecting susceptibility to future (but not present) fire hazards, adequacy of firesafety knowledge, and beliefs in the effectiveness of firesafety inspections. It is shown that the results of this analysis can be quite useful in guiding the development of firesafety education materials; also, the need to differentiate the specific motivational approach depending upon the type of firesafety action being promoted with this particular population is revealed.

    Notes: Abstract A model was derived for the length distribution of aluminum etch tunnels, based on an assumed constant death rate per unit length. Both active and dead tunnels were accounted. The model gives reasonable fits to measured tunnel length distribution data with two adjustable parameters, the death rate per unit length and the number of active tunnels. The death rate parameter has a value of about 2% of tunnels dying per μm of growth length for the set of experimental data. The numbers of active and dead tunnels appear to be consistent with other tunnel measurements.

    Notes: Abstract Galvanostatic electrodeposition of polypyrrole from more than 20 nonaqueous and aqueous electrolytes containing anions such as BF 4 − , ClO 4 − , HSO 4 − , Tos−, HCO 3 − , H2PO 4 − , HPO 4 2− , H2BO 3 − and NO 3 − at the substrates Pt, Au, Cu, Ti, stainless steel/V2A and Fe was investigated. The passivating substrates Pt, Au, Ti and V2A could be electrocoated under a broad variety of conditions. Cu dissolved anodically. The same was true for Fe with only one important exception, namely aqueous nitrate. Smooth, well-adhering polypyrrole layers were obtained on iron at NO 3 − concentrations of 0.01–1 M and at current densities of 0.5–10 mA cm−2. The degree of insertion for nitrate ions was abouty=0.25, confirmed by elemental analysis. Current efficiencies with regard to thisy were about 90%. The layers were stable in air for a long time.

    Notes: Abstract Glyphosate was applied to the water surface of four small boreal forest ponds and sixin situ microcosms at a rate of 0.89 Kg a.i./ha. Water samples collected over a period of up to 255 days were analyzed for glyphosate and its primary metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA). Glyphosate dissipated rapidly from all ponds with first order half-lives ranging from 1.5 to 3.5 days. The slowest dissipation rate occurred in the pond with the most calcareous water and sediments. Glyphosate remained at or above the treatment concentration in microcosms containing only water but decreased rapidly in the presence of sediments. AMPA levels in ponds and microcosms were consistently low. Concentrations on microcosm wall samples were temporally variable, probably a result of adsorption to periphytic biofilms. Glyphosate in the sediments of treated microcosms generally increased with time during the period of observation. These results confirm that glyphosate dissipates rapidly from the surfaces waters of lentic systems, and suggest that sediment adsorption or biodegradation were the major means of glyphosate loss from the water column.

    Notes: Abstract The edible parts of several species of fish and other marine organisms inhabiting the Calcasieu River/Lake, Louisiana were analyzed for Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Hg, Ag, Zn, and As. Concentrations of all metals measured in both intra and interspecies showed no significant variation with sample location. Differences in elemental concentrations were related to organism mobility and not to site-specific variations in metal loadings. Different species of finfish contained only trace amounts of Cd (0.02-0.08), Ag (〈0.01–0.3), Pb (〈0.2–0.5), and As (〈0.1–0.3) mg kg−1. Concentrations of Cu and Cr were highly variable, in contrast to Zn, which was present in relatively constant amounts across all species (28 ± 7 mg kg−1). Sessile organisms such as oysters had the highest concentrations of heavy metals, including Cd. Periphyton and Zooplankton were the only groups that showed differences in metal concentrations with sampling location.

    Notes: Summary By means of the [14C]-2-deoxyglucose method the local cerebral glucose utilization (LCGU) was measured in 41 brain regions in autoimmune New Zealand Black (NZB) mice and in Carworth Farm Winkelmann (CFW) mice, which served as the control strain. At the age of 6 months, the mean LCGU of all measured areas and brain stem nuclei was 67.7 μmol glucose/(100 g x min) in the nonautoimmune CFW mice. These LCGU values are within the limits published by other observers. In contrast, in the aged-matched NZB mice the glucose use was markedly reduced, the mean LCGU of all measured areas being 37.7 μmol glucose/(100 g x min). These findings suggest that the immunological, morphological and behavioural abnormalities in the aged NZB mouse correlate with a reduced functional activity of the central nervous system, measured as reduced cerebral glucose utilization.

    Notes: Abstract Intracellular nucleotides of Salmonella typhimurium were separated and quantified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Wild type and specially constructed strains of S. typhimurium, in which uridine and cytidine nucleotides could be manipulated independently, were used in this study. By varying growth conditions it was possible to create different concentrations of uridine and cytidine nucleotides in the cell. The specific activity of ATCase was determined for each condition. Generally, a direct correlation was found: at high nucleotide (UTP) concentrations, maximal repression of ATCase was usually seen; at low nucleotide (UTP) concentrations ATCase was derepressed. However, it was the ratio of the concentrations of UTP-to-CTP rather than either the concentration of UTP or CTP alone that best determined the extent of ATCase expression. This applied to all conditions in the present work as well as to all conditions in work hitherto reported by others. The ratio of UTP/CTP is proposed as a key regulatory parameter for pyr enzyme expression.

    Notes: Abstract Gametes of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii synthesize numerous proteins not observed in vegetative cells and vice versa. Gametogenesis induced changes in gene expression were confirmed by SDS-PAGE of in vitro translation products using total RNA from gametes and vegetative cells. Vegetative cells and gametes thus represent two cell types with distinct patterns of gene expression. The generation of mature gametes from liquid cultures of asynchronously growing vegetative cells was dependent on light. This light requirement could not be substituted for by an organic source of energy and carbon, indicating that light serves as a signal in gametogenesis. The light signal was shown to become effective only after preincubation in nitrogen-free medium. This delayed competence for light indicates that the two external signals — nitrogen-starvation and light —may function in sequence. Execution of the light dependent step in gamete formation required cytoplasmic protein synthesis and RNA synthesis.
