    Notes: Kinetic studies were carried out on the reaction between ethylenediamine and C21 cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic acid, prepared from dehydrated castor oil fatty acids and acrylic acid, in melt phase. The reaction was performed at six different temperatures ranging from 210 to 260°C and followed by determining the acid value of the product. The polyamidation reaction was found to follow an overall third order kinetics with an activation energy of 15.5 kcal/g mol.

    Notes: The structures of ZI- and ZII- form RNA and DNA oligonucleotides were energy minimized in vacuum using the AMBER molecular mechanics force field. Alternating C-G sequences were studied containing either unmodified nucleotides, 8-bromoguanosine in place of all guanosine residues, 5-bromocytidine in place of all cytidine residues, or all modified residues. Some molecules were also energy minimized in the presence of H2O and cations. Free energy perturbation calculations were done in which G8 and C5 hydrogen atoms in one or two residues of Z-form RNAs and DNAs were replaced in a stepwise manner by bromines. Bromination had little effect on the structures of the energy-minimized molecules. Both the minimized molecular energies and the results of the perturbation calculations indicate that bromination of guanosine at C8 will stabilize the Z forms of RNA and DNA relative to the nonbrominated Z form, while bromination of cytidine at C5 stabilizes Z-DNA and destabilizes Z-RNA. These results are in agreement with experimental data. The destabilizing effect of br5C in Z-RNAs is apparently due to an unfavorable interaction between the negatively charged C5 bromine atom and the guanosine hydroxyl group. The vacuum-minimized energies of the ZII- form oligonucleotides are lower than those of the corresponding ZI- form molecules for both RNA and DNA. Previous x-ray diffraction, nmr, and molecular mechanics studies indicate that hydration effects may favor the ZI- conformation over the ZII- form in DNA. Molecular mechanics calculations show that the ZII-ZI energy differences for the RNAs are greater than three times those obtained for the DNAs. This is due to structurally reinforcing hydrogen-bonding interactions involving the hydroxyl groups in the ZII form, especially between the guanosine hydroxyl hydrogen atom and the 3′-adjacent phosphate oxygen. In addition, the cytidine hydroxyl oxygen forms a hydrogen bond with the 5′-adjacent guanosine amino group in the ZII- form molecule. Both of these interactions are less likely in the ZI- form molecule: the former due to the orientation of the GpC phosphate away from the guanosine ribose in the ZI form, and the latter apparently due to competitive hydrogen bonding of the cytidine 2′-hydroxyl hydrogen with the cytosine carbonyl oxygen in the ZI form. The hydrogen-bonding interaction between the cytidine hydroxyl oxygen and the 5′-adjacent guanosine amino group in Z-RNA twists the amino group out of the plane of the base. This may be responsible for differences in the CD and Raman spectra of Z-RNA and Z-DNA.

    Notes: N,N′-bis(3,3′-itaconimidophenyl) sulfone has been synthesized by reacting itaconic anhydride with 3,3′-diamino diphenyl sulfone. The bisitaconimides and the intermediates were characterized by chemical analysis, IR, NMR, TG, and GPC. The degree of polymerization (DP) of the prepolymers of the bisitaconimide was followed by GPC and from the NMR data on vinylidene and aromatic proton ratios. The correlation between DP and intrinsic viscosity of the prepolymers was made use of to determine the Mark-Houwink constants (K and α). The thermal stability and the decomposition kinetics of the prepolymers were evaluated from TG data. The kinetic parameters, viz. energy of activation, E, and preexponential factor A, were computed using four nonisothermal integral equations, and their values are not appreciably affected by the degree of polymerization, within the range studied.

    Notes: Bismaleimides containing ester, amide, urethane, and imide groups in the backbone were synthesized from maleimido benzoic acid via its acid chloride or isocyanate with 4,4′-dihydroxy-diphenyl-2,2-propane, 3,3′-diamino diphenyl sulfone, and 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid anhydride by simple condensation or addition reaction. The new bismaleimides are characterized by IR, 1H-NMR, and elemental analysis. DSC studies of these bismaleimides indicated a curing exotherm in the temperature range 150-270°C with heat of polymerization 30-50 J/g. Thermogravimetric analysis of the uncured resins showed high thermal stability and char yield for imide containing bismaleimide. The observed char yields of the bismaleimide resins are in accordance with the calculated C/H ratios.

    Notes: Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) γ-irradiated in air at room temperature and recorded at room temperature and at liquid-nitrogen temperature have been studied to identify the radiation products. The ESR spectra are composed of eight lines with hyperfine splittings of 23 ± 1 G and 11 ± 1 G. The method of least-squares total curve fitting, employing the Lorentzian line shape function, to the observed spectra enabled the assignment of the spectra. Computed spectra obtained by the superposition of a singlet and the spectra due to chain radicals are considered to give the best fits to the observed ESR spectra. The singlet is assigned to the radicals COOH, and the component 10-line spectra are assigned to the chain radicals CH3—CH—CH2 ∼ and/or ∼ CH2—CH—CH2 ∼. The observed change in line shape with temperature of the ESR spectra is attributed to the hindered oscillations of the methyl groups about the Cα—Cβ bond axis of the chain radicals. The existence of the methyl groups is confirmed by the measurement of infrared absorption.

    Notes: Phase behavior of blends of a liquid-crystalline (LC) polymer with a non-LC polymer and of a series of copolymers containing mesogenic and nonmesogenic units was studied by thermal, optical, and dynamic mechanical methods. The polymers composing the blends and the copolymers had the same constituent monomers. The blends exhibited phase separation over the whole range of compositions studied as observed by DSC and dynamic mechanical analysis. Two glass transition temperatures (Tg) corresponding to the two components and independence of melting (Tm) and isotropization temperatures (Ti) to changes in composition were observed for the blends. The copolymers did not show phase separation over most of the composition range studied. Only one Tg corresponding to that of the major component could be detected for the copolymers, and the Tg was found to increase with an increase in the amount of nonmesogenic monomer in the copolymers. The difference in phase behavior was explained on the basis of the chemical environment of the constituent units in the blends and in copolymers. Phase inversion in the blends was observed by microscopy when the blends contained 60 mol% or more of the non-LC polymer.

    Notes: Different formulations of rubber with chopped coconut fiber (treated and untreated) as reinforcing agent were prepared. These reinforced systems were vulcanized at 153°C and the properties of the vulcanizates were studied by stress-strain, shore A hardness, and abrasion loss measurements. The bonding between the rubber and fillers were improved by the addition of bonding agents. The bonding effect of different bonding agents were compared. The reinforcing property of the treated fiber was compared with the untreated one. Aging resistance of the composites were studied. The fracture surfaces have been studied by scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM) and the failure mechanism has been explained.
