Notes: Abstract Viscoelastic parameters of poly(butylene terephthalate) melt in compression creep have been measured in an Instron Capillary Rheometer. Bulk compression creep complianceB(t) shows plateau regions in the molten state and in the melt crystallized state, both decreasing with increasing stress. Shifting ofB(t) curves provides master curves suitable for analyzing the total (superposed elastic and viscous) bulk compression behavior. Volume viscosity decreases with both increasing stresses and compression rates but seems to be independent of temperature. Its values are larger than those from constant compression rate experiments, possibly due to the presence of elastic effects.

Notes: Abstract We analyse the QCD non-singlet leading order prediction ofR=σ L /σ L using the results of the EMCF 2 fits to proton, deuterium and iron data and we examine in detail its compatibility withR from SLAC. Least squares fits to combined EMC and SLACF 2 andR proton data are carried out at leading order in the non-singlet case. Incompatibilities have been confirmed which, in spite of present uncertainties, require the consideration of power corrections.

Notes: Abstract A probe reaction is proposed to measure the number of active hydrogen atoms on platinum supported catalysts. Adsorbed hydrogen is titrated by ethylene pulses. The reaction product, ethane, desorbs quantitatively and can be measured directly by gas chromatography. This determination yields the total number of active hydrogen atoms per Pt atom (NAH). The method was tested on a set of Pt/Al2O3 catalysts. The results show that NAH can exceed several times the number of metal atoms on the catalyst and increases with the time of catalyst treatment with hydrogen at high temperature. The turnover rate for ethylene hydrogenation is constant when referred to NAH, but not when referred to the percentage of exposed metal atoms, as determined by conventional methods.

Notes: Summary A further inquiry on modern human origins, based on common genetic pool surveys of rigorously selected population samples and highly informative immunological polymorphisms, provides new evidence of an Occidental-Oriental population split as the origin of human gene pool divergencies. The most likely ancestral genetic profile is discussed in the context of the debate raised by preliminary DNA restriction fragment length polymorphism studies, which contradict the conclusions drawn from classical blood group analyses.

Notes: Abstract The systemic induction of expression of the gene for proteinase inhibitor II after wounding different parts of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) plants was analysed at the RNA level. Wounding of either leaves or tubers led to an induction of expression of this gene in non-wounded upper and lower leaves as well as in the upper stem segment, whereas no expression was observed in nonwounded roots or in the lower stem segment. The signal mediating the systemic induction in nonwounded tissue must therefore be able to move both acropetally and basipetally. The systemic wound response is specific for the expression of the proteinase-inhibitor-II gene as no influence was observed for the expression of genes encoding the small subunit of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase and the tuber storage protein patatin which were examined in parallel with the proteinase-inhibitor-II gene.

Notes: Summary We studied the effects of density on the dynamics of seedling growth and canopy microclimate within experimental stands composed of Datura ferox L. seedlings grown in individual pots. Interception of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) by seedlings was evaluated either indirectly, by measuring leaf area, proportion of leaf area shaded by neighbouring individuals and laminar orientation with respect to sunlight, or directly, by measuring PAR at individual leaves at their natural angle of display. An integrating cylinder, with a geometry approximating that of a stem, was used within the canopies to measure the red:far-red (R:FR) ratio of the light flux from all compass points parallel to the soil surface. Seedlings responded rapidly (i.e. 1–2 weeks) to increased density by producing longer internodes and partitioning more dry matter to stems relative to leaves. These responses were observed before either PAR interception of growth rate were reduced by the presence of neighbours. Conversely, morphogenetic adjustment was preceded by a consistent effect of plant density on the R:FR ratio of the light received by the integrating cylinder. Air and soil temperature were not affected by density in these experiments. Differences in wind velocity within the canopy associated with plant density were avoided by the experimental procedure. The results support the idea that the drop in R:FR ratio of the light flux parallel to the ground — e.g. reflected sunlight — is an early signal that allows rapid adjustment of plant form to changes in canopy structure.

Notes: Summary Sustained-release theophylline 10.1 mg/kg b.d. was given with placebo or fenoterol 2.5 mg t.d.s. to 12 patients with chronic airway obstruction. Fenoterol did not significantly affect the steady-state serum theophylline trough level (11.84 µg/ml for fenoterol vs 11.10 µg/ml for placebo). Addition of fenoterol produced no further increase in spirometric function nor in clinical status.

Notes: Summary Rate constants are reported for the oxidation by peroxodisulphate ions of octacyanomolybdate(IV) in concentrated aqueous salt solutions containing up to 6 mol dm−3 salt including mixed salt solutions. The dependence of the logarthm of rate constant on salt concentration is discussed in terms of ionic hydration enthalpies and B-viscosity coefficients. The analysis confirms that ion-pairs play a key role in determining reactivities in these systems.

Notes: Abstract The syntheses, specific optical rotations, spectral features (1H-NMR, UV-visible and IR spectroscopy) and thermal characterization of seven 4-(O-acetyl)-glycopyranosylamino-5-nitrosopyrimidine derivatives are reported. With IR spectroscopy, the starting of the pyrolytic decomposition mechanism of the compounds was established.
