Notes: Summary Rhesus monkeys evoked a vigorous antibody response to a single heteroimmunization dose of zona pellucida antigens, when these were administered along with complete Freud's adjuvant. The antisera recognized all the three major porcine zona glycoprotein families and the animals were rendered amenorrheic after such immunization. Monkeys immunized with zona without adjuvant, however, failed to show any anti-zona antibody response and had normal menstrual cycles. Zona pellucida glycoproteins are thus not effective immunogens unless administered along with a powerful adjuvant.

Notes: Abstract Spectrophotometric observations of Cornet Hartley-Good (19851) during five nights in 1985 are presented in the wavelength range λλ3200–7000 ». The emission bands due to CN, CH, C2, and C3 molecules are observed. The abundances (N) and production rates (Q) of the molecules are derived.

Notes: Abstract We present spectrophotometric studies of comet Hartley-Good (1985l) in the spectral region λλ3200–7000 Å. The emission features of molecules CN, CH, C2, and C3 are observed. The variation of the emission strength of different species has been studied as a function of heliocentric distance. The abundances (N) and production rates (Q) of the molecules are also estimated.

Notes: Abstract Spectral scans of the head of periodic Comet Halley (1982i) have been presented and analysed in detail in the optical region (λλ3200–7000 Å); for ten nights during pre-perihelion period. Emission features due to NH, CN, CH, C3, and C2 molecules have been identified. The behaviour of the variation of different emission lines strength as a function of heliocentric distance has been investigated. It is found that the comet exhibits night-to-night variation of brightness. The abundances and production rates of CN and C2 species have also been derived.

Notes: Summary On the basis that unbound concentration better correlates with response than total plasma or blood concentration, the inter- and intra-subject variability in the distribution of cyclosporin within blood and to plasma components was studied in renal transplant patients. Pharmacokinetic aspects were also studied. Blood samples were analysed from patients who received the drug both by a 72-h i.v. infusion and orally (7 mg·kg−1 twice daily). Steady-state was reached within 18 h of starting the i.v. infusion; the plasma data were best fitted by a biexponential equation with half-times of 0.13–1.02 h and 4.3–13.9 h, associated with the two phases. The mean plasma clearance was 700 ml/min. Concentrations during the infusions measured by RIA and HPLC were comparable. Oral profiles showed rapid and extensive absorption. The peak plasma concentrations were 1460–1880 µg·l−1 and occurred 2–4 h after dosing, with bioavailability estimates of 41–113%. Concentrations measured by RIA were higher than by HPLC. Blood-to-plasma concentration ratio measurements of cyclosporin at 37°C decreased with increasing plasma concentration and increased with haematocrit. Fraction unbound, measured by ultracentrifugation, was in the range 0.042–0.122 with an average of 0.068, and varied little in some patients but showed systematic changes with time in others. Cyclosporin binding was found to be related not only to the triglyceride but, more particularly, to the cholesterol-related lipoproteins in plasma. Monitoring cholesterol may be helpful in identifying patients with extremes in binding or with widely varying binding.

Notes: Abstract Electron spin resonance, optical spectra and d.c. electrical conductivity of 2Li2O · 3B2O3 glasses doped with V2O5 and CuO were investigated. Spin Hamiltonian parameters of transition metal (TM) ions have been determined. The theoretical optical basicity Λth of these glasses has been calculated and related to the spin-Hamiltonian parameters of TM ions. The variation of electrical conductivity with composition has been explained.

Notes: Abstract The substituted apatites Ca10(PO4)6(1−x)(VO4)6x (OH)2 and Pb10(PO4)6(1−x)(VO4)6x (OH)2, where x is the fraction of vanadate, were prepared in the powdered microcrystalline nature. The X-ray diffraction patterns and the infrared spectra of these substituted apatites were recorded. The analysis of the measurements established that the unit cell parameters did not vary smoothly with the degree of substitution as expected by the Vegard's Law. Two different types of linear behaviour in the two regions 0 to 50% and 50 to 100% were present. Hence, this implies the inadequacy of the Vegard's Law when applied to the whole range of substitutions.

Notes: Abstract The forward energy flow cross section is described in terms of the projectile-nucleon abrasion probability which is calculated in the impact parameter representation within the framework of the Glauber multiple scattering formalism. Realistic nuclear densities and the nucleon-nucleon inelastic cross section have been used in the calculation. The recent WA80 data are in reasonable agreement with the calculation. A simple relationship has been obtained between the abrased nucleons from the target and projectile and the zero degree energy.

Notes: Abstract A study of physicochemical and biological treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater by the activated sludge process was performed in an oxidation ditch. The physicochemical study using different coagulants revealed that all the coagulants used are not effective and their doses required were very high for COD reduction. In the biological oxidation study, it was found that the wastewater could be processed at all organic loadings and phenol concentrations encountered in wastewater. The yield coefficient and decay coefficient were 0.75 (COD basis) and 0.01 day−1 (COD basis), respectively.
