Notes: Abstract Excitonic resonance structures in GaAs/AlAs multiple quantum well heterostructures with varying barrier-layer thicknessesL B down to 1.3 nm are investigated for two sets of samples with the nominal well widths ofL Z =9.2 and 6.4 nm, by 2K photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy. The observed resonance energies of then=1 heavyhole (1 hh) and light-hole (1 lh) free excitons imply that quantum confinement effects persist at least down to the decreased barrier-layer thickness ofL B =1.3 nm. This result is inconsistent with the red shifts expected from the simple well-coupling theory within the one-band Kronig-Penney model at theГ point. Instead, blue shifts of 6–8 meV (8–17 meV) are observed for the 1 hh (1 lh) excitonic resonance peaks whenL B is decreased from 10 to 2 nm. A relative decrease of the oscillator strength of the 1 lh transition compared to the 1 hh transition is also observed asL B is decreased. These results manifest important effects of the indirect-gap barrier material for the actual wavefunction matching across the interface and the breakdown of the envelope function approach to GaAs/AlAs quantum well heterostructures with ultrathin barriers.

Notes: Abstract The use of photothermal deflection spectroscopy for a noncontact characterization of photovoltaic cells is presented. It is shown that this technique is capable of providing not only the optimum load resistance and conversion efficiency, but also the value of the internal series resistance of the cell. A comparison with other photothermal detection techniques is also presented.

Notes: Abstract The average wavelength of organised structures in the far wake of a circular cylinder is inferred from several different estimates based primarily on wind tunnel measurements. Spectra of the lateral velocity fluctuation and cross-spectra between this fluctuation and the temperature fluctuation, at either the same point or at a different point in space, provide relatively unambiguous estimates of the average wavelength of the structures. Dye photographs in a water tunnel provide a less accurate estimate of the average wavelength of the structures. However, all estimates indicate that the average wavelength increases with streamwise distance, at a rate consistent with the self-preserving growth of the wake.

Notes: Abstract An original procedure to obtain extruded ceramic fibres of calcium modified lead titanate has been developed. Slurry preparation was made by homogeneous mixture of crystalline ceramic powder with a gel of analogous composition acting as plasticizer. In addition, the gel phase provides a binder elect to the green fibres after extrusion and during the first stage of the firing process. On the other hand, the high reactivity of the gel accelerates the sintering mechanisms. Fibres of ∼ 1 mm final diameter and 97% of the theoretical density were obtained for moderate sintering conditions (1000° C, 3 to 7 h). The microstructure of the fibres was studied in comparison with those of ceramics prepared from each of the two components separately. Since electromechanical properties of these types of ceramics strongly depend on the microstructure, the procedure here developed is considered very appropriate for their processing.

Notes: Abstract When a ceramic with grain Boundaries rich in OPb is poled Beyond 4O kV cm−1 at ferroelectric phase, the highest anisotropy of electromechanical coupling factor is obtained. An attempt to explain this Behaviour is made in terms of domain switching and the strains and cracks generated during cooling down poling. Apart from composition, two more factors are revealed as contributing to the disappearance of radial coupling in Ca-modified lead titanate ceramics: microtexture and electric poling strategy.

Notes: Abstract The influence of processing conditions on the physical properties of transition metal-metalloid based metallic glasses was studied. It was shown that if the melt superheat and cooling rate are changed, the quenched-in stresses and the local environment of the constituent atoms are modified causing remarkable changes in several magnetic, mechanical and chemical properties. In addition, the relaxation characteristics and thermal behaviour were also drastically changed by the processing.

Notes: Abstract The mechanical properties of PRT films feature an interesting temperature and strain-rate dependence. The elastic modulus and yield behaviour have been studied over a wide temperature range from 30 to 650° C. The onset of a structural reorganization is observed at about 300° C. The dependence of yield stress on strain rate at different temperatures was examined in terms of the Eyring theory of an activated rate process. It was found that the stress activation volume varies with temperature. The overall elastic-plastic behaviour as a function of temperature and strain rate was interpreted in terms of a previously suggested model that incorporates residual stresses in a rigid rod-like polymer. Enhancement of modulus was also observed due to deformation of the films under elevated temperatures, where better molecular orientation and lateral ordering are achieved.

Notes: Summary Enzyme assay showed that the commercial cellulase from Trichoderma reesei degraded several polysaccharide substrates; highest activity was on xylan. Transmission electron micrographs showed that the T. reesei cellulase degraded nondecayed wood extensively; the attack always progressed from the point of contact into the cell wall. Cytochemically prepared wood that had been decayed by Poria placenta showed uniform distribution of electron-dense particles throughout the walls; the same results were observed with added T. reesei cellulase. In wood decayed by Ganoderma applanatum without or with added T. reesei cellulase, the progress of degradation was similar to that in nondecayed wood. Negatively stained T. reesei cellulase had 3–7 nm diameter for the smallest particles; the smallest diamaters of electron-dense particles in wood ranged from 3–7 nm. This suggests that the electron-dense particles probably are cellulase molecules.
