    Description: Work undertaken during the contract and its results are described. Many of the results from this investigation are available in journal or conference proceedings literature - published, accepted for publication, or submitted for publication. For these the reference and the abstract are given. Those results that have not yet been submitted separately for publication are described in detail. Accomplishments during the contract period are summarized as follows: (1) analysis of the snow reflectance characteristics of the LANDSAT Thematic Mapper, including spectral suitability, dynamic range, and spectral resolution; (2) development of a variety of atmospheric models for use with LANDSAT Thematic Mapper data. These include a simple but fast two-stream approximation for inhomogeneous atmospheres over irregular surfaces, and a doubling model for calculation of the angular distribution of spectral radiance at any level in an plane-parallel atmosphere; (3) incorporation of digital elevation data into the atmospheric models and into the analysis of the satellite data; and (4) textural analysis of the spatial distribution of snow cover.

    Description: A method for estimating the biophysical properties of a forest canopy through inversion of microwave scatterometer data is discussed. A C-band scatterometer flown over an aspen site in northern Minnesota during 19 days from May 2 to October 20, 1984, was modified to enable continuous recording of the range of the target. This provided the backscatter cross section as a function of range and was used to study scattering processes within the canopy. The remote estimates of HH, VV, and HV extinction coefficient values agreed well with the estimates obtained with the use of an active radar calibrator.

    Description: The decreased instantaneous field of view (IFOV) is one of the principal advances noted for the Thematic Mapper (TM) sensor. The 42.5 microradian IFOV of TM and the 710 km nominal orbit altitude result in a 30 m nominal spatial resolution at the earth surface. This is a considerable decrease in the projected pixel area when compared to the 79 m nominal spatial resolution of the Landsat Multispectral Scanner (MSS). An experiment was conducted which allowed a rigorous test of the influence of classifier design, with data spatial resolution of TM (30 m) and approximately that of the Landsat MSS (90 m), on classification performance for a particular TM scene. The experiment involved evaluation of the results for the per-point Gaussian maximum likelihood (GML) classifier and the supervised ECHO (Extraction and Classification of Homogeneous Objects) classifier.

    Description: Among the tools used in passive remote sensing of Earth resources in the visible and near-infrared spectral regions are measurements of spectral signature and bidirectional reflectance functions (BDRFs). Determination of surface properties using these observables is complicated by a number of factors, including: (1) mixing of surface components, such as soil and vegetation, (2) multiple reflections of radiation due to complex geometry, such as in crop canopies, and (3) atmospheric effects. In order to bridge the diversity in these different approaches, there is a need for a fundamental physical understanding of the influence of the various effects and a quantiative measure of their relative importance. In particular, we consider scene complexity effects using the example of reflection by vegetative surfaces. The interaction of sunlight with a crop canopy and interpretation of the spectral and angular dependence of the emergent radiation is basically a multidimensional radiative transfer problem. The complex canopy geometry, underlying soil cover, and presence of diffuse as well as collimated illumination will modify the reflectance characteristics of the canopy relative to those of the individual elements.

    Description: Catastrophic flooding associated with deglaciation created unusual landscapes in several areas of northern Sweden. These areas in Swedish Lapland are distinguished by the large grain-size material that forms them. The presence of boulders at both Viking landing sites suggests the relevance of this analog. The Baldakatj area of Swedish Lapland offers terrestrial analogs for erosional remnants on Mars. Although the Baldakatj features are an order of magnitude or more smaller than the Martian forms, they created in boulder-rich till that may be a good approximation of the near-surface material on Mars. The Baldakatj area also includes other landforms that could reasonably be expected to occur with the Martian outflow channels, including boulder deltas, large transported blocks, and large-scale bedforms.

    Description: Classification capabilities with TM data result from the interactive effects of all of the sensor's attributes which complicates a more quantitative evaluation of the effects of individual sensor improvements. An experiment conducted to quantify the effect of individual sensor parameters (e.g., spectral, spatial, and radiometric resolution) on classification accuracy is described on classification accuracy. Preliminary results obtained using TM data acquired over the Washington, D.C., area indicate that the additional number of spectral bands and quantization levels of the TM relative to the MSS increase capabilities for the recognition and discrimination of land cover/use categories by per-pixel maximum likelihood classification. The refinement of spatial resolution, however, seems to hinder classification.

    Description: Analyses of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data were conducted to assess the effects of sensor advancements on the thematic classification of remote sensing data. The effects of altering three sensor characteristics (spatial resolution, data quantization, and spectral band configuration) from Landsat Multispectral Scanner (MSS) specifications were investigated using analysis-of-variance (ANOVA). Analyses were conducted on data from two TM scenes: Washington, D.C. (late autumn) and western Pennsylvania (late summer). Results indicate that the contribution of sensor advancements to thematic classification are highly dependent of spectral and spatial scene attributes.

    Description: An analysis is presented of the magnitude and variability of the effect of the atmosphere on high-altitude Daedalus Airborne Thematic Mapper data. By regressing ATM radiances against ground radiances (from measurements by a helicopter-mounted Barnes Modular Multiband Radiometer), it was possible to account for atmospheric conditions and variability across a 250 km transect in Oregon to estimate coniferous forest leaf area index. The technique permitted scene contrast to be increased, providing an improved capability for measurement of ground feature radiance.

    Description: Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (AIS) data were flown over the Recluse, Wyoming oil field on September 9, 1984. Processing software was developed at Earth Satellite Corporation (EarthSat) for interactive analysis of the AIS data. EarthSat's AIS processing capabilities include destriping, solar irradiance corrections, residual calculations, geometric resampling, equal energy normalization, interactive spectral classifications and a variety of compressive algorithms to reduce the data to 8-bit format with a minimum of information loss. The in-house photolab facilities of EarthSat can routinely produce high-quality color renditions of the enhanced AIS data. A total of 80 lithologic samples were collected under the AIS flight lines. Correlation (within the atmospheric windows) between the laboratory and the AIS spectra of sample sites was generally poor. Reasonable correlation was only possible in large, freshly plowed fields. Mixed pixels and contrast between the natural and sample's surfaces were believed responsible for the poor correlation. Finally, a drift of approximately three channels was observed in the diffraction grating position within the 1.8 to 2.1 micron quadrant.

    Description: The launch of LANDSAT-4 in July 1982 represents a continuation in the remote sensing of earth resources. The 80-m spatial resolution provided by the Multispectral Scanner (MSS) on board the satellite is fine enough to resolve many natural features and land-use details in both rural and urban settings. The second sensor of the spacecraft, the Thematic Mapper (TM), introduce a new era of sensing with refined spatial resolution (30 m) and expanded spectral coverage (7 bands). This paper describes results from engineering studies of the characteristics of digital image data from the two LANDSAT-4 sensors are described. These studies form a part of the LANDSAT-4 Image Data Quality Analysis program (LIDQA). The image data were generally found to be of high quality and the TM provided several improvements over the MSS, in its spatial and spectral characteristics.
