Description: Yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.) is a serious weed problem in the United States and other countries. An indigenous rust fungus [Puccinia canaliculata (Schw.) Lagerh.], pathogenic on yellow nutsedge, was released in early spring as a potential biological control agent. The fungus inhibited nutsedge flowering and new tuber formation. The fungus also dehydrated and killed nutsedge plants. The successful control of yellow nutsedge by a rust epiphytotic under experimental conditions demonstrates the potential use of the rust in an integrated weed management system.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Phatak, S C -- Sumner, D R -- Wells, H D -- Bell, D K -- Glaze, N C -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Mar 25;219(4591):1446-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17735196" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Previous studies at this laboratory showed that repeated application of inactivated herpes simplex virus type 2 to the mouse cevix produced premalignant and malignant lesions. In the present study mice were inoculated with inactivated herpes simplex virus type 2 or control solution and Freund's adjuvant by intraperitoneal and subcuaneous routes before exposure of the cervix to inactivated virus. It appears that immunization with inactivated virus conferred a protection against the induction of cervical carcinoma.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Wentz, W B -- Heggie, A D -- Anthony, D D -- Reagan, J W -- CA-31973/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Dec 9;222(4628):1128-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6316503" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Thirteen eruptions of Mount St. Helens between June 1980 and December 1982 were predicted tens of minutes to, more generally, a few hours in advance. The last seven of these eruptions, starting with that of mid-April 1981, were predicted between 3 days and 3 weeks in advance. Precursory seismicity, deformation of the crater floor and the lava dome, and, to a lesser extent, gas emissions provided telltale evidence of forthcoming eruptions. The newly developed capability for prediction reduced risk to life and property and influenced land-use decisions.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Swanson, D A -- Casadevall, T J -- Dzurisin, D -- Malone, S D -- Newhall, C G -- Weaver, C S -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Sep 30;221(4618):1369-76.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17759006" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: A biosynthetic experiment with mevalonic acid labeled with carbon-14 showed that the nudibranch Dendrodoris limbata elaborates polygodial, a sesquiterpenoid dialdehyde stored in the mantle, which constitutes its chemical defense against predators. Previously described nudibranchs drew defensive chemicals from their preys.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Cimino, G -- DE Rosa, S -- DE Stefano, S -- Sodano, G -- Villani, G -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Mar 11;219(4589):1237-8.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17771309" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Soft-bodied and lightly sclerotized Burgess shale fossils have been found at more than a dozen new localities in an area extending for 20 kilometers along the front of the Cathedral Escarpment in the Middle Cambrian Stephen Formation of the Canadian Rockies. Five different fossil assemblages from four stratigraphic levels have been recognized. These assemblages represent distinct penecontemporaneous marine communities that together make up a normal fore-reef faunal complex.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Collins, D -- Briggs, D -- Morris, S C -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Oct 14;222(4620):163-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17741659" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Giardia lamblia, a common pathogenic intestinal parasite of humans, was rapidly killed by exposure to normal human milk in vitro. The killing did not depend on secretory immunoglobulin A. Entamoeba histolytica, the dysentery amoeba, was also killed by normal human milk. Giardia-cidal activity cochromatographed with an unusual lipase that is present in the milk of humans but not of lower mammals. Human milk may play a protective role in infants exposed to this parasite.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Gillin, F D -- Reiner, D S -- Wang, C S -- AI19863/AI/NIAID NIH HHS/ -- HD14104/HD/NICHD NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Sep 23;221(4617):1290-2.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6310751" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Pakicetus inachus from the early Eocene of Pakistan is the oldest and most primitive cetacean known. The dentition of Pakicetus resembles that of carnivorous mesonychid land mammals as well as middle Eocene cetaceans. The otic region of the cranium lacks characteristic specializations of whales necessary for efficient directional hearing under water. Pakicetus occurs with a land-mammal fauna in fluvial sediments bordering epicontinental Eocene remnants of the eastern Tethys seaway. Discovery of Pakicetus strengthens earlier inferences that whales originated from terrestrial carnivorous mammals and suggests that whales made a gradual transition from land to sea in the early Eocene, spending progressively more time feeding on planktivorous fishes in shallow, highly productive seas and embayments associated with tectonic closure of eastern Tethys.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Gingerich, P D -- Wells, N A -- Russell, D E -- Shah, S M -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Apr 22;220(4595):403-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17831411" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The saccadic system accurately compensates for perturbations of eye position produced by microstimulation of the superior colliculus. This requires that information about the stimulation-induced change in eye position be provided by an extraretinal source--either proprioceptive endings in extraocular muscles or a centrally generated corollary discharge. It is shown that compensation remains intact after elimination of extraocular muscle proprioception, demonstrating that corollary discharge provides accurate eye position information.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Guthrie, B L -- Porter, J D -- Sparks, D L -- F32 EY05651/EY/NEI NIH HHS/ -- P30 EY03039/EY/NEI NIH HHS/ -- R01 EY01189/EY/NEI NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Sep 16;221(4616):1193-5.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6612334" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Moored current meter, sea level, hydrographic, and surface drifter measurements show the large changes that took place in the eastern tropical Pacific during the onset of the warm episode of 1982. In August the near-surface flow at 0 degrees , 110 degrees W reversed direction to eastward. By October the sea surface temperature in the equatorial zone increased by 5 degrees Celsius above the long-term monthly mean value, sea level rose by 22 centimeters at the Galapagos Islands, and the thermocline was displaced downward by 50 to 70 meters along the equator and the South American coast.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Halpern, D -- Hayes, S P -- Leetmaa, A -- Hansen, D V -- Philander, S G -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Sep 16;221(4616):1173-5.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17811520" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
