Notes: Abstract The X-ray structure determination of (η 5-C5H5)Co(HNC6H4NH) (Ib) reveals that the compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space groupP21/n witha=12.479(3),b=8.865(2),c=17.817(5) Å, {iβ}=94.70(2)°,V=1964.4(6) Å3,Z=8 (two independent molecules form the asymmetric unit). Least-squares refinement based on 1894 independent observed reflections,I≥2.5σ(I), resulted in a finalR value of 0.054. A pattern of somewhat shortened Co-N bonds (〈av〉 1.83 Å), short C-N bonds (〈av〉 1.34 Å), Co-N-C bond angles consistent with trigonally hybridized N, and a nearly planar metallocyclic ring suggest that some electron delocalization may exist in the ring. This pattern, however, may also be explicable in terms of factors other than delocalization; alternatives are discussed. The structure may best be regarded as a CoI complex containing ano-quinonediimine ligand.

Notes: Conclusions Pollution abatement technologies instituted by recycling paper mills have resulted in a decrease in PCBs in final effluents discharged to the Lower Fox River. Concurrent declines in fish PCB body burdens have also been noted. It is not certain, however, whether the resultant decrease in PCB final effluent concentrations is sufficient to protect aquatic life from bioaccumulation of PCBs above an acceptable level. Furthermore, sediment PCB concentrations remain high in previously impacted areas.

Notes: Summary A simple method for the in situ embedding of cell cultures for electron microscopy has been developed. The procedure is carried out in its entirety within the culture flask, using only standard fixing and embedding reagents. Precoating of the supporting surface of the flask with alternative substrates is not required. This method permits precise orientation of samples with respect to the phase-contrast image of living cultures.

Notes: Abstract The effect of light on the size of intact protoplasts isolated from the primary leaves of etiolated Triticum aestivum was studied. A 2-min red-light irradiation in the presence of 1 mM KCl was sufficient to cause a swelling of protoplasts compared with those maintained in darkness. The effect was photoreversible by far-red light over two light cycles, indicating the involvement of phytochrome. At 4°C, escape from reversibility occurred between 2 and 5 min after the exposure to red light. In exposure-response experiments, 20 s red light at 27 μmol m-2s-1 was sufficient to saturate the response. Exogenous gibberellic acid added in darkness in the presence of KCl also induced protoplast swelling. Gibberellins may act as an intermediate in the phytochrome-induced swelling of protoplasts.

Notes: Synopsis Observations of reproductive features and body measurements were made on wild-caught, freshwater stingrays, Potamotrygon circularis and P. motoro, from the Amazon drainage of western Brazil and southern Colombia. Further observations were made in Detroit's Belle Isle Aquarium on a captive pair of P. motoro and their descendants, which constitute the first known captive breeding colony of potamotrygonids. The gross structure and function of female and male reproductive systems are described. There is no obvious difference between those of the two species. They are aplacentally viviparous, the young being nourished in advanced stages by uterine milk secreted by trophonemata. Size at onset and completion of sexual maturation, breeding season and behavior, gestation period, litter size and sex ratios are discussed. Up to 21 proportional measurements were made on several fetal and postnatal stages of both species. Several proportional changes occur in very early fetal life, but most body proportions undergo only minor changes from advanced fetal through adult stages. A growth curve is proposed for P. motoro based on observations of the captive colony.

Description / Table of Contents: 31P and 195Pt N.M.R. Investigations on Diplatinum (I) Complexes of the Type [Pt2(μ-SPR2)2L2] (L = PR3, PhP(OPh)2, P(OPh)3, CNR)31P-, 195Pt-chemical shifts and 195Pt-31P- resp. 31P-31P-coupling constants of a series of doubly bridged diplatinum(I) complexes are reported. 31P-coordination chemical shifts of the terminal ligands of complexes of type [Pt2(μ-SPR2)2(P′R3′)2] and some of the various coupling constants are strongly influenced by the π-acceptor strength of these ligands. J(195Pt-195Pt) is found to change the sign among the series of complexes investigated. Thermal singlett triplet exitation giving rise to the paramagnetism of these complexes observed by preliminary EPR-measurements and confirmed by EHT-calculations is deduced from the large values of 2J(P-P′) and 3J(P′P′) as well as the unusually high temperature dependence of some coupling constants and other NMR features. The chemical stability of the doubly bridged core, the coordination shifts of the bridging phosphorus atoms and EHT-calculations suggest a view of aromaticity of the [Pt2(μ-SPR2)2](M-M) unit of these complexes.

Description / Table of Contents: NMR Spectroscopic Studies of 15N Labelled PhenylamidochlorocyclotetraphosphazenesSome endocyclically 15N labelled phenylamidochlorocyclotetraphosphazenes, 15N4P4Cl7NHPh, 6,8-15N4P4Cl6(NHPh)2 and 4,8-15N4P4Cl6(NHPh)2, as well as the corresponding exocyclically 15N labelled compounds N4P4Cl715NHPh, 6,8-N4P4Cl6(15NHPh)2 and 4,8-N4P4Cl6(15NHPh)2 were prepared, and the 31P and 15N NMR spectra were recorded. In the case of the endocyclically labelled compounds it is possible to determine the relative signs of the coupling constants 1JPN by means of spectra simulation. In order to interprete the relatively large coupling constants 3JPN to the exocyclic nitrogen a Karplus diagram was calculated and discussed.
