    Description: The solubility of sulfur dioxide in 50% (wt./wt.) sulfuric acid was evaluated by regular solution theory, and the results verified by experimental measurements in the temperature range of 25 C to 70 C at pressures of 60 to 200 PSIA. The percent (wt./wt.) of sulfur dioxide in 50% (wt./wt.) sulfuric acid is given by the equation %SO2 = 2.2350 + 0.0903P - 0.00026P 10 to the 2nd power with P in PSIA.

    Description: Experimental data, together with supporting analysis, are presented on the power conversion performance and blade loading of large, horizontal-axis wind turbines tested at electric utility sites in the U.S. Four turbine rotor configurations, from 28 to 61 meters in diameter, and data from five test sites are included. Performance data are presented in the form of graphs of power and system efficiency versus free-stream wind speed. Deviations from theoretical performance are analyzed statistically. Power conversion efficiency averaged 0.34 for all tests combined, compared with 0.31 predicted. Round blade tips appeared to improve performance significantly. Cyclic blade loads were normalized to develop load factors which can be used in the design of rotors with rigid hubs.

    Description: Annealing of radiation damage was observed for the first time in VPE-grown, 2- by 2-cm, n+/p/p+ GaAs shallow homojunction solar cells. Electrical performance of several cells was determined as a function of 1-MeV electron fluence in the range of 10 to the 13th power to 10 to the 15th power e-/sq cm and as a function of thermal annealing time at various temperatures. Degradation of normalized power output after a fluence of 10 to the 15th power 1-MeV electrons/sq cm ranged from a low of 24 to 31 percent of initial maximum power. Normalized short circuit current degradation was limited to the range from 10 to 19 percent of preirradiated values. Thermal annealing was carried out in a flowing nitrogen gas ambient, with annealing temperatures spanning the range from 125 to 200 C. Substantial recovery of short circuit current was observed at temperatures as low as 175 C. In one case improvement by as much as 10 percent of the postirradiated value was observed. The key features of these cells are their extremely thin emitter layers (approxmately 0.05 micrometers), the absence of any Al sub xGd sub 1-x As passivating window layer, and their fabrication by vapor phase epitaxy.

    Description: Four slip-cast, injection-molded and isostatically-pressed specimens of reaction-bonded silicon nitride (RBSN) were subjected to static oxidation tests at 900 C for 10 hours. Specimens containing 8-10% interconnected open porosity of size greater than one micron exhibited a 20-30% decrease in average room temperature four-point flexure strength, while those with 10% open porosity of magnitudes much smaller than one micron as well as those with 2-4% interconnected open porosity of about one micron did not decrease in strength after 900 C exposure. It was determined that preoxidation treatment at 1350 C prevents the 20-30% strength degradation due to internal oxidation, and evidence is presented which suggests that surface pit formation in some RBSN may result from contamination by the furnace environment rather than any intrinsic material properties.

    Description: High performance channel sealant is based on NASA patented cyano and diamidoximine-terminated perfluoroalkylene ether prepolymers that are thermally condensed and cross linked. The sealant contains asbestos and, in its preferred embodiments, Lithofrax, to lower its thermal expansion coefficient and a phenolic metal deactivator. Extensive evaluation shows the sealant is extremely resistant to thermal degradation with an onset point of 280 C. The materials have a volatile content of 0.18%, excellent flexibility, and adherence properties, and fuel resistance. No corrosibility to aluminum or titanium was observed.

    Description: A method of repairing cracks or damaged areas in glass, in particular, glass coatings provided on tile. The method includes removing the damaged area using a high speed diamond burr drilling out a cavity that extends slightly into the base material of the tile. All loose material is then cleaned from the drilled out cavity and the cavity is filled adjacent the upper surface of the coating with a filler material including chopped silica fibers mixed with a binder. The filler material is packed into the cavity and a repair coating is applied by means of a brush or sprayed thereover. The repair includes borosilicate suspended in solution. Heat is applied at approximately 2100 F. for approximately five minutes for curing the coating, causing boron silicide particles of the coating to oxidize forming a very fluid boron-oxide rich glass which reacts with the other frits to form an impervious, highly refractory layer.

    Description: The technology required to produce graphite-polyimide structural components with operational capability at 598 K (600 F) is considered. A series of polyimide adhesives was screened for mechanical and physical properties and processibility in fabricating large midplane bonded panels and honeycomb sandwich panels in an effort to fabricate a structural test component of the space shuttle aft body flap. From 41 formulations, LaRC-13, FM34B-18, and a modified LaRC-13 adhesive were selected for further evaluation. The LaRC-13 adhesive was rated as the best of the three adhesives in terms of availability, cost, processibility, properties, and ability to produce void fee large area (12" x 12") midplane bonds. Surface treatments and primers for the adhesives were evaluated and processes were developed for the fabrication of honeycomb sandwich panels of very good quality which was evidenced by rupture in the honeycomb core rather than in the facesheet bands on flatwise tensile strength testing. The fabrication of the adhesively bonded honeycomb sandwich cover panels, ribs, and leading edge covers of Celion graphite/LARC-160 polyimide laminates is described.

    Description: The technical progress to provide a critical technology base for utility gas turbine systems capable of burning coal-derived fuels is summarized. Project tasks include the following: (1) combustion - to investigate the combustion of coal-derived fuels and the conversion of fuel-bound nitrogen to NOx; (2) materials - to understand and prevent the hot corrosion of turbine hot section materials; and (3) system studies - to integrate and guide the technological efforts. Technical accomplishments include: an extension of flame tube combustion testing of propane - Toluene Fuel Mixtures to vary H2 content from 9 to 18 percent by weight and the comparison of results with that predicted from a NASA Lewis General Chemical Kinetics Computer Code; the design and fabrication of combustor sector test section to test current and advanced combustor concepts; Testing of Catalytic combustors with residual and coal-derived liquid fuels; testing of high strength super alloys to evaluate their resistance to potential fuel impurities using doped clean fuels and coal-derived liquids; and the testing and evaluation of thermal barrier coatings and bond coatings on conventional turbine materials.

    Description: Ellipsometry, which is the study of optical systems through their effect on polarized light, is a nondestructive technique offering extremely high sensitivity and in situ operation. One of the intriguing possibilities is to make use of the high sensitivity of ellipsometry for studying the very thin interface between an insulating film and a semiconductor substrate. Researchers have been especially interested in native or anodic oxides. In a recent study, Aspnes and Theeten used ellipsometry to study the interface between silicon and its thermally grown oxide, SiO2. These authors were able to conclude that the interface consisted of a 7 +/- 2 A graded region of atomically mixed silicon and oxygen. In this paper we report both analysis and experimental results for the system: sputtered silicon nitride on (100) n-type gallium arsenide.

    Description: The mechanism of deactivation of energy of excitation in a resin system was investigated on optical excitation as well as excitation by high energy electrons. This mechanism involves formation of excited state complexes, known as exciplexes which have a considerable charge transfer character. This mechanism will be used to develop a degradation model for epoxy matrix materials deployed in a space environment.
