    Description: We report the sequence and analysis of the 814-megabase genome of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, a model for developmental and systems biology. The sequencing strategy combined whole-genome shotgun and bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) sequences. This use of BAC clones, aided by a pooling strategy, overcame difficulties associated with high heterozygosity of the genome. The genome encodes about 23,300 genes, including many previously thought to be vertebrate innovations or known only outside the deuterostomes. This echinoderm genome provides an evolutionary outgroup for the chordates and yields insights into the evolution of deuterostomes.〈br /〉〈br /〉〈a Description: Energetic young pulsars and expanding blast waves [supernova remnants (SNRs)] are the most visible remains after massive stars, ending their lives, explode in core-collapse supernovae. The Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope has unveiled a radio quiet pulsar located near the center of the compact synchrotron nebula inside the supernova remnant CTA 1. The pulsar, discovered through its gamma-ray pulsations, has a period of 316.86 milliseconds and a period derivative of 3.614 x 10(-13) seconds per second. Its characteristic age of 10(4) years is comparable to that estimated for the SNR. We speculate that most unidentified Galactic gamma-ray sources associated with star-forming regions and SNRs are such young pulsars.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Abdo, A A -- Ackermann, M -- Atwood, W B -- Baldini, L -- Ballet, J -- Barbiellini, G -- Baring, M G -- Bastieri, D -- Baughman, B M -- Bechtol, K -- Bellazzini, R -- Berenji, B -- Blandford, R D -- Bloom, E D -- Bogaert, G -- Bonamente, E -- Borgland, A W -- Bregeon, J -- Brez, A -- Brigida, M -- Bruel, P -- Burnett, T H -- Caliandro, G A -- Cameron, R A -- Caraveo, P A -- Carlson, P -- Casandjian, J M -- Cecchi, C -- Charles, E -- Chekhtman, A -- Cheung, C C -- Chiang, J -- Ciprini, S -- Claus, R -- Cohen-Tanugi, J -- Cominsky, L R -- Conrad, J -- Cutini, S -- Davis, D S -- Dermer, C D -- de Angelis, A -- de Palma, F -- Digel, S W -- Dormody, M -- do Couto E Silva, E -- Drell, P S -- Dubois, R -- Dumora, D -- Edmonds, Y -- Farnier, C -- Focke, W B -- Fukazawa, Y -- Funk, S -- Fusco, P -- Gargano, F -- Gasparrini, D -- Gehrels, N -- Germani, S -- Giebels, B -- Giglietto, N -- Giordano, F -- Glanzman, T -- Godfrey, G -- Grenier, I A -- Grondin, M-H -- Grove, J E -- Guillemot, L -- Guiriec, S -- Harding, A K -- Hartman, R C -- Hays, E -- Hughes, R E -- Johannesson, G -- Johnson, A S -- Johnson, R P -- Johnson, T J -- Johnson, W N -- Kamae, T -- Kanai, Y -- Kanbach, G -- Katagiri, H -- Kawai, N -- Kerr, M -- Kishishita, T -- Kiziltan, B -- Knodlseder, J -- Kocian, M L -- Komin, N -- Kuehn, F -- Kuss, M -- Latronico, L -- Lemoine-Goumard, M -- Longo, F -- Lonjou, V -- Loparco, F -- Lott, B -- Lovellette, M N -- Lubrano, P -- Makeev, A -- Marelli, M -- Mazziotta, M N -- McEnery, J E -- McGlynn, S -- Meurer, C -- Michelson, P F -- Mineo, T -- Mitthumsiri, W -- Mizuno, T -- Moiseev, A A -- Monte, C -- Monzani, M E -- Morselli, A -- Moskalenko, I V -- Murgia, S -- Nakamori, T -- Nolan, P L -- Nuss, E -- Ohno, M -- Ohsugi, T -- Okumura, A -- Omodei, N -- Orlando, E -- Ormes, J F -- Ozaki, M -- Paneque, D -- Panetta, J H -- Parent, D -- Pelassa, V -- Pepe, M -- Pesce-Rollins, M -- Piano, G -- Pieri, L -- Piron, F -- Porter, T A -- Raino, S -- Rando, R -- Ray, P S -- Razzano, M -- Reimer, A -- Reimer, O -- Reposeur, T -- Ritz, S -- Rochester, L S -- Rodriguez, A Y -- Romani, R W -- Roth, M -- Ryde, F -- Sadrozinski, H F-W -- Sanchez, D -- Sander, A -- Parkinson, P M Saz -- Schalk, T L -- Sellerholm, A -- Sgro, C -- Siskind, E J -- Smith, D A -- Smith, P D -- Spandre, G -- Spinelli, P -- Starck, J-L -- Strickman, M S -- Suson, D J -- Tajima, H -- Takahashi, H -- Takahashi, T -- Tanaka, T -- Thayer, J B -- Thayer, J G -- Thompson, D J -- Thorsett, S E -- Tibaldo, L -- Torres, D F -- Tosti, G -- Tramacere, A -- Usher, T L -- Van Etten, A -- Vilchez, N -- Vitale, V -- Wang, P -- Watters, K -- Winer, B L -- Wood, K S -- Yasuda, H -- Ylinen, T -- Ziegler, M -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2008 Nov 21;322(5905):1218-21. doi: 10.1126/science.1165572. Description: The Stardust spacecraft collected thousands of particles from comet 81P/Wild 2 and returned them to Earth for laboratory study. The preliminary examination of these samples shows that the nonvolatile portion of the comet is an unequilibrated assortment of materials that have both presolar and solar system origin. The comet contains an abundance of silicate grains that are much larger than predictions of interstellar grain models, and many of these are high-temperature minerals that appear to have formed in the inner regions of the solar nebula. Their presence in a comet proves that the formation of the solar system included mixing on the grandest scales.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Brownlee, Don -- Tsou, Peter -- Aleon, Jerome -- Alexander, Conel M O'd -- Araki, Tohru -- Bajt, Sasa -- Baratta, Giuseppe A -- Bastien, Ron -- Bland, Phil -- Bleuet, Pierre -- Borg, Janet -- Bradley, John P -- Brearley, Adrian -- Brenker, F -- Brennan, Sean -- Bridges, John C -- Browning, Nigel D -- Brucato, John R -- Bullock, E -- Burchell, Mark J -- Busemann, Henner -- Butterworth, Anna -- Chaussidon, Marc -- Cheuvront, Allan -- Chi, Miaofang -- Cintala, Mark J -- Clark, B C -- Clemett, Simon J -- Cody, George -- Colangeli, Luigi -- Cooper, George -- Cordier, Patrick -- Daghlian, C -- Dai, Zurong -- D'Hendecourt, Louis -- Djouadi, Zahia -- Dominguez, Gerardo -- Duxbury, Tom -- Dworkin, Jason P -- Ebel, Denton S -- Economou, Thanasis E -- Fakra, Sirine -- Fairey, Sam A J -- Fallon, Stewart -- Ferrini, Gianluca -- Ferroir, T -- Fleckenstein, Holger -- Floss, Christine -- Flynn, George -- Franchi, Ian A -- Fries, Marc -- Gainsforth, Z -- Gallien, J-P -- Genge, Matt -- Gilles, Mary K -- Gillet, Philipe -- Gilmour, Jamie -- Glavin, Daniel P -- Gounelle, Matthieu -- Grady, Monica M -- Graham, Giles A -- Grant, P G -- Green, Simon F -- Grossemy, Faustine -- Grossman, Lawrence -- Grossman, Jeffrey N -- Guan, Yunbin -- Hagiya, Kenji -- Harvey, Ralph -- Heck, Philipp -- Herzog, Gregory F -- Hoppe, Peter -- Horz, Friedrich -- Huth, Joachim -- Hutcheon, Ian D -- Ignatyev, Konstantin -- Ishii, Hope -- Ito, Motoo -- Jacob, Damien -- Jacobsen, Chris -- Jacobsen, Stein -- Jones, Steven -- Joswiak, David -- Jurewicz, Amy -- Kearsley, Anton T -- Keller, Lindsay P -- Khodja, H -- Kilcoyne, A L David -- Kissel, Jochen -- Krot, Alexander -- Langenhorst, Falko -- Lanzirotti, Antonio -- Le, Loan -- Leshin, Laurie A -- Leitner, J -- Lemelle, L -- Leroux, Hugues -- Liu, Ming-Chang -- Luening, K -- Lyon, Ian -- Macpherson, Glen -- Marcus, Matthew A -- Marhas, Kuljeet -- Marty, Bernard -- Matrajt, Graciela -- McKeegan, Kevin -- Meibom, Anders -- Mennella, Vito -- Messenger, Keiko -- Messenger, Scott -- Mikouchi, Takashi -- Mostefaoui, Smail -- Nakamura, Tomoki -- Nakano, T -- Newville, M -- Nittler, Larry R -- Ohnishi, Ichiro -- Ohsumi, Kazumasa -- Okudaira, Kyoko -- Papanastassiou, Dimitri A -- Palma, Russ -- Palumbo, Maria E -- Pepin, Robert O -- Perkins, David -- Perronnet, Murielle -- Pianetta, P -- Rao, William -- Rietmeijer, Frans J M -- Robert, Francois -- Rost, D -- Rotundi, Alessandra -- Ryan, Robert -- Sandford, Scott A -- Schwandt, Craig S -- See, Thomas H -- Schlutter, Dennis -- Sheffield-Parker, J -- Simionovici, Alexandre -- Simon, Steven -- Sitnitsky, I -- Snead, Christopher J -- Spencer, Maegan K -- Stadermann, Frank J -- Steele, Andrew -- Stephan, Thomas -- Stroud, Rhonda -- Susini, Jean -- Sutton, S R -- Suzuki, Y -- Taheri, Mitra -- Taylor, Susan -- Teslich, Nick -- Tomeoka, Kazu -- Tomioka, Naotaka -- Toppani, Alice -- Trigo-Rodriguez, Josep M -- Troadec, David -- Tsuchiyama, Akira -- Tuzzolino, Anthony J -- Tyliszczak, Tolek -- Uesugi, K -- Velbel, Michael -- Vellenga, Joe -- Vicenzi, E -- Vincze, L -- Warren, Jack -- Weber, Iris -- Weisberg, Mike -- Westphal, Andrew J -- Wirick, Sue -- Wooden, Diane -- Wopenka, Brigitte -- Wozniakiewicz, Penelope -- Wright, Ian -- Yabuta, Hikaru -- Yano, Hajime -- Young, Edward D -- Zare, Richard N -- Zega, Thomas -- Ziegler, Karen -- Zimmerman, Laurent -- Zinner, Ernst -- Zolensky, Michael -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2006 Dec 15;314(5806):1711-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Astronomy, University of Washington, Seattle, WA 98195, USA. brownlee@astro.washington.edu〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17170289" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

    Description: One fundamental question about pulsars concerns the mechanism of their pulsed electromagnetic emission. Measuring the high-end region of a pulsar's spectrum would shed light on this question. By developing a new electronic trigger, we lowered the threshold of the Major Atmospheric gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescope to 25 giga-electron volts. In this configuration, we detected pulsed gamma-rays from the Crab pulsar that were greater than 25 giga-electron volts, revealing a relatively high cutoff energy in the phase-averaged spectrum. This indicates that the emission occurs far out in the magnetosphere, hence excluding the polar-cap scenario as a possible explanation of our measurement. The high cutoff energy also challenges the slot-gap scenario.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉MAGIC Collaboration -- Aliu, E -- Anderhub, H -- Antonelli, L A -- Antoranz, P -- Backes, M -- Baixeras, C -- Barrio, J A -- Bartko, H -- Bastieri, D -- Becker, J K -- Bednarek, W -- Berger, K -- Bernardini, E -- Bigongiari, C -- Biland, A -- Bock, R K -- Bonnoli, G -- Bordas, P -- Bosch-Ramon, V -- Bretz, T -- Britvitch, I -- Camara, M -- Carmona, E -- Chilingarian, A -- Commichau, S -- Contreras, J L -- Cortina, J -- Costado, M T -- Covino, S -- Curtef, V -- Dazzi, F -- De Angelis, A -- De Cea Del Pozo, E -- de Los Reyes, R -- De Lotto, B -- De Maria, M -- De Sabata, F -- Delgado Mendez, C -- Dominguez, A -- Dorner, D -- Doro, M -- Elsasser, D -- Errando, M -- Fagiolini, M -- Ferenc, D -- Fernandez, E -- Firpo, R -- Fonseca, M V -- Font, L -- Galante, N -- Garcia Lopez, R J -- Garczarczyk, M -- Gaug, M -- Goebel, F -- Hadasch, D -- Hayashida, M -- Herrero, A -- Hohne, D -- Hose, J -- Hsu, C C -- Huber, S -- Jogler, T -- Kranich, D -- La Barbera, A -- Laille, A -- Leonardo, E -- Lindfors, E -- Lombardi, S -- Longo, F -- Lopez, M -- Lorenz, E -- Majumdar, P -- Maneva, G -- Mankuzhiyil, N -- Mannheim, K -- Maraschi, L -- Mariotti, M -- Martinez, M -- Mazin, D -- Meucci, M -- Meyer, M -- Miranda, J M -- Mirzoyan, R -- Moles, M -- Moralejo, A -- Nieto, D -- Nilsson, K -- Ninkovic, J -- Otte, N -- Oya, I -- Paoletti, R -- Paredes, J M -- Pasanen, M -- Pascoli, D -- Pauss, F -- Pegna, R G -- Perez-Torres, M A -- Persic, M -- Peruzzo, L -- Piccioli, A -- Prada, F -- Prandini, E -- Puchades, N -- Raymers, A -- Rhode, W -- Ribo, M -- Rico, J -- Rissi, M -- Robert, A -- Rugamer, S -- Saggion, A -- Saito, T Y -- Salvati, M -- Sanchez-Conde, M -- Sartori, P -- Satalecka, K -- Scalzotto, V -- Scapin, V -- Schweizer, T -- Shayduk, M -- Shinozaki, K -- Shore, S N -- Sidro, N -- Sierpowska-Bartosik, A -- Sillanpaa, A -- Sobczynska, D -- Spanier, F -- Stamerra, A -- Stark, L S -- Takalo, L -- Tavecchio, F -- Temnikov, P -- Tescaro, D -- Teshima, M -- Tluczykont, M -- Torres, D F -- Turini, N -- Vankov, H -- Venturini, A -- Vitale, V -- Wagner, R M -- Wittek, W -- Zabalza, V -- Zandanel, F -- Zanin, R -- Zapatero, J -- de Jager, O C -- de Ona Wilhelmi, E -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2008 Nov 21;322(5905):1221-4. doi: 10.1126/science.1164718. Description: Microquasars are binary star systems with relativistic radio-emitting jets. They are potential sources of cosmic rays and can be used to elucidate the physics of relativistic jets. We report the detection of variable gamma-ray emission above 100 gigaelectron volts from the microquasar LS I 61 + 303. Six orbital cycles were recorded. Several detections occur at a similar orbital phase, which suggests that the emission is periodic. The strongest gamma-ray emission is not observed when the two stars are closest to one another, implying a strong orbital modulation of the emission or absorption processes.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Albert, J -- Aliu, E -- Anderhub, H -- Antoranz, P -- Armada, A -- Asensio, M -- Baixeras, C -- Barrio, J A -- Bartelt, M -- Bartko, H -- Bastieri, D -- Bavikadi, S R -- Bednarek, W -- Berger, K -- Bigongiari, C -- Biland, A -- Bisesi, E -- Bock, R K -- Bordas, P -- Bosch-Ramon, V -- Bretz, T -- Britvitch, I -- Camara, M -- Carmona, E -- Chilingarian, A -- Ciprini, S -- Coarasa, J A -- Commichau, S -- Contreras, J L -- Cortina, J -- Curtef, V -- Danielyan, V -- Dazzi, F -- De Angelis, A -- de Los Reyes, R -- De Lotto, B -- Domingo-Santamaria, E -- Dorner, D -- Doro, M -- Errando, M -- Fagiolini, M -- Ferenc, D -- Fernandez, E -- Firpo, R -- Flix, J -- Fonseca, M V -- Font, L -- Fuchs, M -- Galante, N -- Garczarczyk, M -- Gaug, M -- Giller, M -- Goebel, F -- Hakobyan, D -- Hayashida, M -- Hengstebeck, T -- Hohne, D -- Hose, J -- Hsu, C C -- Isar, P G -- Jacon, P -- Kalekin, O -- Kosyra, R -- Kranich, D -- Laatiaoui, M -- Laille, A -- Lenisa, T -- Liebing, P -- Lindfors, E -- Lombardi, S -- Longo, F -- Lopez, J -- Lopez, M -- Lorenz, E -- Lucarelli, F -- Majumdar, P -- Maneva, G -- Mannheim, K -- Mansutti, O -- Mariotti, M -- Martinez, M -- Mase, K -- Mazin, D -- Merck, C -- Meucci, M -- Meyer, M -- Miranda, J M -- Mirzoyan, R -- Mizobuchi, S -- Moralejo, A -- Nilsson, K -- Ona-Wilhelmi, E -- Orduna, R -- Otte, N -- Oya, I -- Paneque, D -- Paoletti, R -- Paredes, J M -- Pasanen, M -- Pascoli, D -- Pauss, F -- Pavel, N -- Pegna, R -- Persic, M -- Peruzzo, L -- Piccioli, A -- Poller, M -- Pooley, G -- Prandini, E -- Raymers, A -- Rhode, W -- Ribo, M -- Rico, J -- Riegel, B -- Rissi, M -- Robert, A -- Romero, G E -- Rugamer, S -- Saggion, A -- Sanchez, A -- Sartori, P -- Scalzotto, V -- Scapin, V -- Schmitt, R -- Schweizer, T -- Shayduk, M -- Shinozaki, K -- Shore, S N -- Sidro, N -- Sillanpaa, A -- Sobczynska, D -- Stamerra, A -- Stark, L S -- Takalo, L -- Temnikov, P -- Tescaro, D -- Teshima, M -- Tonello, N -- Torres, A -- Torres, D F -- Turini, N -- Vankov, H -- Vitale, V -- Wagner, R M -- Wibig, T -- Wittek, W -- Zanin, R -- Zapatero, J -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2006 Jun 23;312(5781):1771-3. Description: The atmospheric Cherenkov gamma-ray telescope MAGIC, designed for a low-energy threshold, has detected very-high-energy gamma rays from a giant flare of the distant Quasi-Stellar Radio Source (in short: radio quasar) 3C 279, at a distance of more than 5 billion light-years (a redshift of 0.536). No quasar has been observed previously in very-high-energy gamma radiation, and this is also the most distant object detected emitting gamma rays above 50 gigaelectron volts. Because high-energy gamma rays may be stopped by interacting with the diffuse background light in the universe, the observations by MAGIC imply a low amount for such light, consistent with that known from galaxy counts.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉MAGIC Collaboration -- Albert, J -- Aliu, E -- Anderhub, H -- Antonelli, L A -- Antoranz, P -- Backes, M -- Baixeras, C -- Barrio, J A -- Bartko, H -- Bastieri, D -- Becker, J K -- Bednarek, W -- Berger, K -- Bernardini, E -- Bigongiari, C -- Biland, A -- Bock, R K -- Bonnoli, G -- Bordas, P -- Bosch-Ramon, V -- Bretz, T -- Britvitch, I -- Camara, M -- Carmona, E -- Chilingarian, A -- Commichau, S -- Contreras, J L -- Cortina, J -- Costado, M T -- Covino, S -- Curtef, V -- Dazzi, F -- De Angelis, A -- De Cea Del Pozo, E -- de Los Reyes, R -- De Lotto, B -- De Maria, M -- De Sabata, F -- Mendez, C Delgado -- Dominguez, A -- Dorner, D -- Doro, M -- Errando, M -- Fagiolini, M -- Ferenc, D -- Fernandez, E -- Firpo, R -- Fonseca, M V -- Font, L -- Galante, N -- Lopez, R J Garcia -- Garczarczyk, M -- Gaug, M -- Goebel, F -- Hayashida, M -- Herrero, A -- Hohne, D -- Hose, J -- Hsu, C C -- Huber, S -- Jogler, T -- Kneiske, T M -- Kranich, D -- La Barbera, A -- Laille, A -- Leonardo, E -- Lindfors, E -- Lombardi, S -- Longo, F -- Lopez, M -- Lorenz, E -- Majumdar, P -- Maneva, G -- Mankuzhiyil, N -- Mannheim, K -- Maraschi, L -- Mariotti, M -- Martinez, M -- Mazin, D -- Meucci, M -- Meyer, M -- Miranda, J M -- Mirzoyan, R -- Mizobuchi, S -- Moles, M -- Moralejo, A -- Nieto, D -- Nilsson, K -- Ninkovic, J -- Otte, N -- Oya, I -- Panniello, M -- Paoletti, R -- Paredes, J M -- Pasanen, M -- Pascoli, D -- Pauss, F -- Pegna, R G -- Perez-Torres, M A -- Persic, M -- Peruzzo, L -- Piccioli, A -- Prada, F -- Prandini, E -- Puchades, N -- Raymers, A -- Rhode, W -- Ribo, M -- Rico, J -- Rissi, M -- Robert, A -- Rugamer, S -- Saggion, A -- Saito, T Y -- Salvati, M -- Sanchez-Conde, M -- Sartori, P -- Satalecka, K -- Scalzotto, V -- Scapin, V -- Schmitt, R -- Schweizer, T -- Shayduk, M -- Shinozaki, K -- Shore, S N -- Sidro, N -- Sierpowska-Bartosik, A -- Sillanpaa, A -- Sobczynska, D -- Spanier, F -- Stamerra, A -- Stark, L S -- Takalo, L -- Tavecchio, F -- Temnikov, P -- Tescaro, D -- Teshima, M -- Tluczykont, M -- Torres, D F -- Turini, N -- Vankov, H -- Venturini, A -- Vitale, V -- Wagner, R M -- Wittek, W -- Zabalza, V -- Zandanel, F -- Zanin, R -- Zapatero, J -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2008 Jun 27;320(5884):1752-4. doi: 10.1126/science.1157087.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Universitat Wurzburg, D-97074 Wurzburg, Germany.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18583607" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Knowledge of mammalian diversity is still surprisingly disparate, both regionally and taxonomically. Here, we present a comprehensive assessment of the conservation status and distribution of the world's mammals. Data, compiled by 1700+ experts, cover all 5487 species, including marine mammals. Global macroecological patterns are very different for land and marine species but suggest common mechanisms driving diversity and endemism across systems. Compared with land species, threat levels are higher among marine mammals, driven by different processes (accidental mortality and pollution, rather than habitat loss), and are spatially distinct (peaking in northern oceans, rather than in Southeast Asia). Marine mammals are also disproportionately poorly known. These data are made freely available to support further scientific developments and conservation action.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Schipper, Jan -- Chanson, Janice S -- Chiozza, Federica -- Cox, Neil A -- Hoffmann, Michael -- Katariya, Vineet -- Lamoreux, John -- Rodrigues, Ana S L -- Stuart, Simon N -- Temple, Helen J -- Baillie, Jonathan -- Boitani, Luigi -- Lacher, Thomas E Jr -- Mittermeier, Russell A -- Smith, Andrew T -- Absolon, Daniel -- Aguiar, John M -- Amori, Giovanni -- Bakkour, Noura -- Baldi, Ricardo -- Berridge, Richard J -- Bielby, Jon -- Black, Patricia Ann -- Blanc, J Julian -- Brooks, Thomas M -- Burton, James A -- Butynski, Thomas M -- Catullo, Gianluca -- Chapman, Roselle -- Cokeliss, Zoe -- Collen, Ben -- Conroy, Jim -- Cooke, Justin G -- da Fonseca, Gustavo A B -- Derocher, Andrew E -- Dublin, Holly T -- Duckworth, J W -- Emmons, Louise -- Emslie, Richard H -- Festa-Bianchet, Marco -- Foster, Matt -- Foster, Sabrina -- Garshelis, David L -- Gates, Cormack -- Gimenez-Dixon, Mariano -- Gonzalez, Susana -- Gonzalez-Maya, Jose Fernando -- Good, Tatjana C -- Hammerson, Geoffrey -- Hammond, Philip S -- Happold, David -- Happold, Meredith -- Hare, John -- Harris, Richard B -- Hawkins, Clare E -- Haywood, Mandy -- Heaney, Lawrence R -- Hedges, Simon -- Helgen, Kristofer M -- Hilton-Taylor, Craig -- Hussain, Syed Ainul -- Ishii, Nobuo -- Jefferson, Thomas A -- Jenkins, Richard K B -- Johnston, Charlotte H -- Keith, Mark -- Kingdon, Jonathan -- Knox, David H -- Kovacs, Kit M -- Langhammer, Penny -- Leus, Kristin -- Lewison, Rebecca -- Lichtenstein, Gabriela -- Lowry, Lloyd F -- Macavoy, Zoe -- Mace, Georgina M -- Mallon, David P -- Masi, Monica -- McKnight, Meghan W -- Medellin, Rodrigo A -- Medici, Patricia -- Mills, Gus -- Moehlman, Patricia D -- Molur, Sanjay -- Mora, Arturo -- Nowell, Kristin -- Oates, John F -- Olech, Wanda -- Oliver, William R L -- Oprea, Monik -- Patterson, Bruce D -- Perrin, William F -- Polidoro, Beth A -- Pollock, Caroline -- Powel, Abigail -- Protas, Yelizaveta -- Racey, Paul -- Ragle, Jim -- Ramani, Pavithra -- Rathbun, Galen -- Reeves, Randall R -- Reilly, Stephen B -- Reynolds, John E 3rd -- Rondinini, Carlo -- Rosell-Ambal, Ruth Grace -- Rulli, Monica -- Rylands, Anthony B -- Savini, Simona -- Schank, Cody J -- Sechrest, Wes -- Self-Sullivan, Caryn -- Shoemaker, Alan -- Sillero-Zubiri, Claudio -- De Silva, Naamal -- Smith, David E -- Srinivasulu, Chelmala -- Stephenson, Peter J -- van Strien, Nico -- Talukdar, Bibhab Kumar -- Taylor, Barbara L -- Timmins, Rob -- Tirira, Diego G -- Tognelli, Marcelo F -- Tsytsulina, Katerina -- Veiga, Liza M -- Vie, Jean-Christophe -- Williamson, Elizabeth A -- Wyatt, Sarah A -- Xie, Yan -- Young, Bruce E -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2008 Oct 10;322(5899):225-30. doi: 10.1126/science.1165115.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Species Programme, IUCN, 28 Rue Mauverney, 1196 Gland, Switzerland. jan.schipper@iucn.org〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18845749" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

    Description: We report the draft genome of the black cottonwood tree, Populus trichocarpa. Integration of shotgun sequence assembly with genetic mapping enabled chromosome-scale reconstruction of the genome. More than 45,000 putative protein-coding genes were identified. Analysis of the assembled genome revealed a whole-genome duplication event; about 8000 pairs of duplicated genes from that event survived in the Populus genome. A second, older duplication event is indistinguishably coincident with the divergence of the Populus and Arabidopsis lineages. Nucleotide substitution, tandem gene duplication, and gross chromosomal rearrangement appear to proceed substantially more slowly in Populus than in Arabidopsis. Populus has more protein-coding genes than Arabidopsis, ranging on average from 1.4 to 1.6 putative Populus homologs for each Arabidopsis gene. However, the relative frequency of protein domains in the two genomes is similar. Overrepresented exceptions in Populus include genes associated with lignocellulosic wall biosynthesis, meristem development, disease resistance, and metabolite transport.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Tuskan, G A -- Difazio, S -- Jansson, S -- Bohlmann, J -- Grigoriev, I -- Hellsten, U -- Putnam, N -- Ralph, S -- Rombauts, S -- Salamov, A -- Schein, J -- Sterck, L -- Aerts, A -- Bhalerao, R R -- Bhalerao, R P -- Blaudez, D -- Boerjan, W -- Brun, A -- Brunner, A -- Busov, V -- Campbell, M -- Carlson, J -- Chalot, M -- Chapman, J -- Chen, G-L -- Cooper, D -- Coutinho, P M -- Couturier, J -- Covert, S -- Cronk, Q -- Cunningham, R -- Davis, J -- Degroeve, S -- Dejardin, A -- Depamphilis, C -- Detter, J -- Dirks, B -- Dubchak, I -- Duplessis, S -- Ehlting, J -- Ellis, B -- Gendler, K -- Goodstein, D -- Gribskov, M -- Grimwood, J -- Groover, A -- Gunter, L -- Hamberger, B -- Heinze, B -- Helariutta, Y -- Henrissat, B -- Holligan, D -- Holt, R -- Huang, W -- Islam-Faridi, N -- Jones, S -- Jones-Rhoades, M -- Jorgensen, R -- Joshi, C -- Kangasjarvi, J -- Karlsson, J -- Kelleher, C -- Kirkpatrick, R -- Kirst, M -- Kohler, A -- Kalluri, U -- Larimer, F -- Leebens-Mack, J -- Leple, J-C -- Locascio, P -- Lou, Y -- Lucas, S -- Martin, F -- Montanini, B -- Napoli, C -- Nelson, D R -- Nelson, C -- Nieminen, K -- Nilsson, O -- Pereda, V -- Peter, G -- Philippe, R -- Pilate, G -- Poliakov, A -- Razumovskaya, J -- Richardson, P -- Rinaldi, C -- Ritland, K -- Rouze, P -- Ryaboy, D -- Schmutz, J -- Schrader, J -- Segerman, B -- Shin, H -- Siddiqui, A -- Sterky, F -- Terry, A -- Tsai, C-J -- Uberbacher, E -- Unneberg, P -- Vahala, J -- Wall, K -- Wessler, S -- Yang, G -- Yin, T -- Douglas, C -- Marra, M -- Sandberg, G -- Van de Peer, Y -- Rokhsar, D -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2006 Sep 15;313(5793):1596-604.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Environmental Sciences Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, TN 37831, USA. gtk@ornl.gov〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16973872" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Draft genome sequences have been determined for the soybean pathogen Phytophthora sojae and the sudden oak death pathogen Phytophthora ramorum. Oomycetes such as these Phytophthora species share the kingdom Stramenopila with photosynthetic algae such as diatoms, and the presence of many Phytophthora genes of probable phototroph origin supports a photosynthetic ancestry for the stramenopiles. Comparison of the two species' genomes reveals a rapid expansion and diversification of many protein families associated with plant infection such as hydrolases, ABC transporters, protein toxins, proteinase inhibitors, and, in particular, a superfamily of 700 proteins with similarity to known oomycete avirulence genes.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Tyler, Brett M -- Tripathy, Sucheta -- Zhang, Xuemin -- Dehal, Paramvir -- Jiang, Rays H Y -- Aerts, Andrea -- Arredondo, Felipe D -- Baxter, Laura -- Bensasson, Douda -- Beynon, Jim L -- Chapman, Jarrod -- Damasceno, Cynthia M B -- Dorrance, Anne E -- Dou, Daolong -- Dickerman, Allan W -- Dubchak, Inna L -- Garbelotto, Matteo -- Gijzen, Mark -- Gordon, Stuart G -- Govers, Francine -- Grunwald, Niklaus J -- Huang, Wayne -- Ivors, Kelly L -- Jones, Richard W -- Kamoun, Sophien -- Krampis, Konstantinos -- Lamour, Kurt H -- Lee, Mi-Kyung -- McDonald, W Hayes -- Medina, Monica -- Meijer, Harold J G -- Nordberg, Eric K -- Maclean, Donald J -- Ospina-Giraldo, Manuel D -- Morris, Paul F -- Phuntumart, Vipaporn -- Putnam, Nicholas H -- Rash, Sam -- Rose, Jocelyn K C -- Sakihama, Yasuko -- Salamov, Asaf A -- Savidor, Alon -- Scheuring, Chantel F -- Smith, Brian M -- Sobral, Bruno W S -- Terry, Astrid -- Torto-Alalibo, Trudy A -- Win, Joe -- Xu, Zhanyou -- Zhang, Hongbin -- Grigoriev, Igor V -- Rokhsar, Daniel S -- Boore, Jeffrey L -- BB/C509123/1/Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council/United Kingdom -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2006 Sep 1;313(5791):1261-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Virginia Bioinformatics Institute, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, VA 24061, USA. bmtyler@vt.edu〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16946064" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
