Notes: This investigation was undertaken to examine the observations of Becker ('72) pertaining to the electrical facilitation of partial limb regenerative responses by means of Ag-Pt wire couples applied to the limb stumps of young, forelimb-amputated white rats. Additionally, in order to examine the possible role of mechanical effects of such device implantations, we have employed uncoupled devices delivering no current or potential difference. In the present experiments, in response to coupled device implantation, cartilage and bone were actively formed in the vicinity of the Pt electrode tip. These tissues contributed to the lengthwise extension of the limb and to the partial restoration of the distal humeral extremity. In limbs bearing the uncoupled electrical devices, qualitatively similar responses were noted, but osteogenesis was diminished in extent compared to that seen in limbs bearing the active or coupled devices. It is therefore necessary to consider the role of mechanical factors in the elicitation of the observed regenerative responses. Myogenesis was enhanced in electrically stimulated limbs, but not in those rats bearing uncoupled devices.

Notes: Much controversy regarding the relationship between nutrients and serum in regulation of cell growth can be reconciled by recognizing that serum contains multiple factors which regulate different events in the cell cycle. Serum was fractioned into a platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), which induces cells to become competent to synthesize DNA, and plasma which allows competent cells to traverse G0/G1 and enter the S phase. Nutrients are not required for the cellular response to PDGF; however amino acids are required for plasma to promote the entry of PDGF-treated, competent cells into S phase. The nutrient independent, PDGF-modulated, growth regulatory event (competence) is located 12 hours prior to the G1/S phase boundary in quiescent, density-arrested Balb/c-3T3 cells. The nutrient dependent, plasma-modulated event is located six hours prior to the G1/S phase boundary and corresponds in time to a plasma dependent growth arrest point. Moreover, plasma controls the concentration of amino acids required for DNA synthesis. Infection of density-arrested Balb/c-3T3 cells with SV40 overrides both the nutrient independent and the nutrient dependent growth regulatory events.

Notes: Stimulation of Balb/c-3T3 cell growth by TPA requires factors found in serum. We examined the interaction between TPA and serum growth factors in the stimulation of cell growth. The number of cells synthesizing DNA (incorporating 3H-thymidine) within 24 to 30 hours after the addition of TPA and the growth factors to density-inhibited Balb/c-3T3 cultures in serum-free medium was determined by autoradiography. With no additions or with TPA (30-300 ng/ml) alone, only 3-7% of cells synthesized DNA. However, TPA synergistically promoted DNA synthesis in combination with each of the defined serum growth fractions, platelet derived growth factor and platelet poor plasma. TPA also synergistically promoted DNA synthesis in combination with purified growth factors including fibroblast growth factor, insulin (10-6-10-5 M), and epidermal growth factor. In all conditions, TPA enhancement of DNA synthesis also resulted in an increase in cell number. Because TPA synergistically enhanced the activity of each growth factor tested, it did not act identically to any of the growth factors.

Description / Table of Contents: Crystal Structure of Thallium(I) Hexaiodomercurate(II), Tl4HgI6In the structure of the tetragonal Tl4HgI6 (a = 944.6 pm, c = 926.0 pm, Z = 2, space group P 4/mnc) isolated, in c-direction compressed HgI6 octahedra are situated. The mercury atoms are disordered; they occupy statistically 4 positions in the equatorial plane of the octahedra in such a manner that strongly deformed HgI4 tetrahedra are produced. The thallium atoms are eightfold coordinated like a bicapped trigonal prism. The relationship between the Tl4HgI6 structure and the cubical K2PtCl6 type will be discussed.

Description: A preliminary evaluation of the feasibility of the use of prestressed concrete as a material for low cost blades for wind turbines was conducted. A baseline blade design was achieved for an experimental wind turbine that met aerodynamic and structural requirements. Significant cost reductions were indicated for volume production. Casting of a model blade section showed no fabrication problems. Coupled dynamic analysis revealed that adverse rotor tower interactions can be significant with heavy rotor blades.

Description: The validation of a 20-year service life for low-cost photovoltaic arrays is a critical requirement in the Low-Cost Solar Array (LSA) Project. The validation is accomplished through accelerated life-prediction tests. A two-phase study was conducted to address the needs before such tests are carried out. The results and recommended techniques from the Phase 1 investigation are summarized in the appendix. Phase 2 of the study is covered in this report and consisted of experimental evaluations of three techniques selected from these recommended as a results of the Phase 1 findings. The three techniques evaluated were specular and nonspecular optical reflectometry, chemiluminescence measurements, and electric current noise measurements.

Description: An advanced technology, fully dedicated nuclear-electrolytic hydrogen production facility is presented. This plant will produce hydrogen and oxygen only and no electrical power will be generated for off-plant use. The conceptual design was based on hydrogen production to fill a pipeline at 1000 psi and a 3000 MW nuclear base, and the base-line facility nuclear-to-shaftpower and shaftpower-to-electricity subsystems, the water treatment subsystem, electricity-to-hydrogen subsystem, hydrogen compression, efficiency, and hydrogen production cost are discussed. The final conceptual design integrates a 3000 MWth high-temperature gas-cooled reactor operating at 980 C helium reactor-out temperature, direct dc electricity generation via acyclic generators, and high-current density, high-pressure electrolyzers based on the solid polymer electrolyte approach. All subsystems are close-coupled and optimally interfaced and pipeline hydrogen is produced at 1000 psi. Hydrogen costs were about half of the conventional nuclear electrolysis process.

Description: This paper presents evaluation of a variety of thermionic converter configurations to obtain improved efficiency. A variable-spacing diode using an iridium emitter gave emission properties comparable to platinum, but the power output from a sintered LaB6 collector diode was not consistent with its work function. Reflectivities above 0.5 were measured at thermal energies on oxygenated-cesiated surfaces using a field emission retarding potential gun. Performance of converters with structured electrodes and the characteristics of a pulsed triode were studied as a function of emitter, collector, cesium reservoir, interelectrode spacing, xenon pressure, and pulsing parameters.
