    Notes: Unbalanced growth has been studied in HeLa cell cultures maintained in perpetual division synchrony by periodic inhibition of DNA synthesis. Observation of eight independent cellular parameters indicates that once synchrony has been established the degree of unbalanced growth in later cycles is not as great as is observed with the conventional “double-block” technique. This significant diminution of unbalanced growth appears to be related to the significantly shorter periods of inhibition of DNA synthesis used in the resynchronization process.

    Notes: Six enzymes associated with the activities of the nucleus (thymidine kinase), mitochondria (succinate dehydrogenase), lysosomes (acid phosphatase), peroxisomes (catalase), (cytosol lactate dehydrogenase), and the intermembranal mitochondrial space (alkaline DNase) were assayed at 2 hr intervals over the division cycle of repetitively resynchronized HeLa cells. The results indicated a high degree of reproductibility for cells synchronized by the method of perpetual resynchronization and may be of direct use to those interested in subcellular organellogenesis.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Use of Titanium Castings to Produce a Complex Shaped Intermediate Casing of RB 199.This paper describes the present position on a highly stressed casing and its functions in the RB 199-34 R engine. When the parts of the casing are made from solid forged titanium billets, up to 93% of the material used is machined away. For this reason, the most complicated parts of the casing were procured as castings and welded together by TIG welding. The paper describes the present quality standard of the titanium castings. The tests on the materials and their mechanical properties show that the castings are inferior to the forgings only with respect to their HCF behaviour and their elongation at rupture. Macroscopic flaws are not entirely inevitable but can be detected by X-ray tests. The future prospects for titanium castings are considered favourable.
    Notes: Der Bericht beschreibt die Lage eines hochbeanspruchten Gehäuses und dessen Funktionen im Triebwerk RB 199-34 R. Bei der Herstellung der Einzelteile des Gehäuses aus massiv geschmiedeten Titanblöcken wird bis zu 93% des eingesetzten Materials zerspant. Die kompliziertesten Partien des Gehäuses wurden deshalb als Gußteil bezogen und mittels WIG-Schweißung verbunden. Der Bericht beschreibt den heutigen Qualitätsstand der Titangußteile. Die Ergebnisse der Werkstoff- und Festigkeitsuntersuchungen weisen nur im HCF-Verhalten und der Bruchdehnung Nachteile des Gusses gegenüber dem geschmiedeten Material aus. Makroskopische Fehler sind nicht vollständing vermeidbar, aber durch Röntgenprüfung nachzuweisen. Die künftigen Aussichten des Titangusses werden positiv beurteilt.

    Notes: Conformational transitions induced by pH changes in random copolymers of leucine and glutamic acid have been studied. Significant differences were observed in the potentiometric titration curves of copolymers with small (up to 4%) and large leucine contents. The helical stability of copolymers with small leucine content, determined from titration curves by the Zimm and Rice method, decreases slightly with an increase in the leucine content, whereas the helical stability of copolymers with large leucine content increases sharply with an increase of the leucine content. It is shown that copolymers with large leucine content aggregate in the region of transition into the helical state, but the increase of their helical state stability is not connected with intermolecular aggregation, as it was also observed for a nonaggregating fraction isolated from one of the copolymers by gel chromatography. A conclusion is made that the helix-coil equilibrium constant s for leucine does not itself exceed the s constant for uncharged polyglutamic acid. The stabilization of the helical state in copolymers with large leucine content is due to intramolecular aggregation of helices in these copolymers. The analysis of the leucine residue distribution between helical and nonhelical regions in globular proteins also gives no real arguments to ascribe special helix-forming properties to leucine.

    Notes: Nutrient transport rates and cyclic AMP levels have been implicated in the regulation of cell proliferation. In the present study, however, changes in intracellular cyclic AMP level induced in several lines of cultured cells (normal 3T3 and SV40 and polyomavirus-transformed 3T3 cells; 3T6, C6 glioma, mouse L, and Novikoff rat hepatoma cells) by treatment with papaverine, prostagladine E, or isoproterenol did not correlate with the inhibition of the uridine, hypoxanthine or deoxyglucose transport rates by these chemicals. Transport inhibitions by above chemicals or Persantin or Cytochalasin B occurred in most cell lines in the absence of any measurable change in intracellular cyclic AMP concentration. Furthermore, treatment of several cell lines with 1 mM dibutyryl cyclic AMP had no immediate effect on the transport of uridine, thymidine or deoxyglucose, although the transport capacity of the cells for uridine and thymidine, but not that for deoxyglucose, decreased progressively with time of treatment. We also observed that the uridine transport system of all cell lines derived from 3T3 cells and the hypoxanthine transport system of L cells exhibited high degrees of resistance to inhibition by the various chemicals. On the other hand, deoxyglucose transport was inhibited to about the same extent by these chemicals in all the cell lines investigated.

    Notes: A thermodynamic approach to the problem of platelet adsorption out of a suspension on to a smooth and homogeneous solid surface is developed. The interfacial tension values required may be estimated from contact angle data by means of an equation of state relation. According to the thermodynamic approach the functional dependence of platelet adsorption on surface tension of the solid differs according to whether the surface tension of the platelets is smaller or larger than the surface tension of the liquid in which they are suspended. The implications of this thermodynamic approach in situations where plasma proteins are present and the biomaterials surfaces may be heterogeneous and rough are discussed. Previous analyses using the critical surface tension of wetting and other surface-related parameters are compared with the thermodynamic analysis given here.

    Notes: Glow discharge treated (GDT) inorganic materials are sterile and free of all organic contaminants. Such materials implanted in the canine inferior vena cava often demonstrate significant thromboresistance. Standard Pyrex glass tubing was GDT in argon to provide a surface free energy above 70 dynes/cm, slight surface negativity, and other surface-physical modifications of its interface. Chromic acid cleaned lengths of the same tubing, and short segments whose edges were not fire-polished were used as controls. Upon canine implantation, the in vivo results were similar in independent surgical laboratories. The glass was implanted as 1.4 cm long rings or as 5 cm long tubes in separate medical centers according to different protocols. GDT specimens remained patent; all controls accumulated thrombi. A remarkably pure, low critical surface tension, labile protein coating covered all cylindrical lumens after 2 hr in vivo. This coating diminished within 2 weeks and was essentially absent after 480 days, even though scanning EM showed evidence of a micron thick luminal film, probably eroding glass. No emboli were found in the implant animal's kidney or lungs at any stage.

    Notes: A technique is outlined which use the electron microprobe to obtain X-ray absorption spectra, by photon absorption, in the long wavelength region. Spectra are presented for SiO, SiO2, rectorite, talc, vermiculite, V2O5, Cr2O3, Fe2O3, maghemite, Mylar and collodion. For all compounds the main absorption edge is near to 536 eV, which is significantly higher than core binding measured in ESCA studies. The transition metal oxides and organic films show a sharp absorption line near 531 eV in addition to the above edge. This absorption line is very close in energy to the anomalous peak observed in the oxygen K emission spectra when using KAP or other acid phthalate crystals and it seems likely that the two phenomena are associated.

    Notes: Computer fitting techniques have been used to derive a new expression for the relationship between X-ray continuum intensity and atomic number for a range of electron acelerating potentials up to 25 kV, continuum energies up to 10 keV and average atomic numbers up to thirty. A practical approach to background corrections in energy dispersive electron microprobe analysis, which utilizes this expression, is outlined. The procedure should lead to significant improvements in both accuracy and detection limits in this method of X-ray analysis.

XII Mono- and binuclear Sulfinato-S Complexes of Palladium(II)According to equations (1-7) the preparation of new mono- and binuclear sulfinato complexes of palladium(II) of the type Na[PdCl(S(O)2R)2(OH2)], (RS(O)2)2PdLn (R = C6H5, p-CH3C6H4; n = 2: L = H2O, py, PPh3; n = 1: L = bpy, phen, en) and [AsPh4]2[(RS(O)2)2+n Pd2Cl4 - n] (n = 0, 2) is reported. While the pyridine compounds are trans-configurated, all the other mononuclear complexes have cis-configuration. In the binuclear complexes the bridging ligands are chlorine, [AsPh4]2[PhS(O)2)2Pd2Cl4]on the basis of the IR spectra has a center of symmetry. The anionic tetra(organosulfinato-S)palladate(II) complexes [AsPh4]2[Pd(S(O)2R)4] could be obtained for the first time by reaction of [AsPh4]2[PdCl4] with silver sulfinates according to equation (10). In all compounds, the IR and electronic spectra of which are discussed in detail, the RSO2- ligand is coordinated to palladium via sulphur.
    Notes: Über die Darstellung neuartiger ein- und zweikerniger Sulfinato-Komplexe von Palladium(II) des Typs Na[PdCl(S(O)2R)2(OH2)], (RS(O)2)2PdLn (R = C6H5, p-CH3C6H4; n = 2: L = H2O, py, PPh3; n = 1: L = bpy, phen, en) und [AsPh4]2[(RS(O2)2+nPd2Cl4 - n] (n = 0, 2) gemäß Gl. (1-7) wird berichtet. Während die Pyridin-Verbindungen trans-konfiguriert sind, besitzen alle anderen einkernigen Komplexe cis-Konfiguration. In den zweikernigen Komplexen liegen Chlorbrücken vor, [AsPh4]2[(PhS(O)2)2Pd2Cl4] besitzt, wie die IR-Spektren zeigen, ein Symmetriezentrum. Bei der Umsetzung von [AsPh4]2[PdCl4] mit Silbersulfinaten gemäß Gl. (10) konnten erstmals die anionischen Tetra(organosulfinato-S)palladat(II)-Komplexe [AsPh4]2[Pd(S(O)2R)4] erhalten werden. In sämtlichen Verbindungen, deren IR- und Elektronenspektren ausführlich diskutiert werden, ist der RSO2--Ligand über Schwefel an das Palladium koordiniert.
