Notizen: A D2-m-dodecacarboranesiloxane containing alternating block copolymer \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$\rlap{--}[{\rm A}\hbox{---}{\rm B}\rlap{--}]_n$\end{document} was prepared by the reaction of a ureidosilane-terminated polysulfone hard block with a carboranesilanol-terminated carboranesiloxane oligomer. The resulting block copolymer exhibited thermoplastic elastomeric behavior. This unique polymer had excellent thermal stability up to 400°C.

Notizen: Kinetic and equilibrium studies of blood platelet binding to copolypeptide films show that attachment and serotonin release are not dependent upon the composition of the copolypeptide. Data may be explained by postulating that platelets frequently collide elastically with the surface but leave behind material that modifies subsequent behavior. Similarly, material released from platelets adsorbs at the interface and the extent of attachment and serotonin release are modified and controlled by these adsorbed species. Basically, if the platelet is exposed to a clean surface, its collision with the surface leads to activation and release. In the presence of inert protein, the collision is cushioned by the protein and platelets do not attach or release to any extent. Finally, if protein (or other entities) released from the platelet provide attachment sites, than attachment occurs without release. It is postulated that the behavior of platelets at surfaces is controlled by these interrelated processes.

Notizen: The provision of accurate composition-depth profiles to depths 〉 1 μm is important in the characterization and investigation of thick films, surface coatings, surface treatments and many other technologically important applications. At present, such profiles are usually achieved by sequential ion bombardment and surface analysis and hence involve many difficulties in interpretation due to the non-uniform erosion of surfaces under ion bombardment. In this paper a method of obtaining accurate depth profiles is described using a ball-cratering device. The method employs a rotating ball to fashion a well-defined spherical crater in the sample surface, the depth and width of which can be accurately controlled. The specimen is then cleaned in situ using a scanning ion beam for a short period and the composition-depth profile is obtained either by point-by-point analysis down the sloping sides of the crater wall or by using Auger line-scan techniques across the crater. Coating-substrate interface analysis can also be obtained by sputter-depth profiling at a point on the coating close to the exposed substrate. The method is not only considerably faster than ion etching, but the resulting depth profile also has a well-defined depth resolution. Composition-depth profiles through nitrocarburized mild steel surfaces and protective surface coatings are presented to illustrate the usefulness of the technique.

Notizen: The electroinitiated polymerizations of styrene, 2-vinylnaphthalene, and 9-vinylanthracene were compared in sulfolane and acetone solvents in the presence of ZnCl2. The relative orders of polymerization rates and polymerization efficiencies, in both solvents, were 9-vinylanthracene 〉 2-vinylnaphthalene 〉 styrene, with faster rates and higher efficiencies occurring in sulfolane. Data obtained from viscosity and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) studies indicate that the molecular weights of the polymers produced in these systems are extremely low, 〈5000. Chemical composition and infrared (IR) spectral data suggest that abnormal transfer reactions (possibly from solvent) may be occurring in the electroinitiated 9-vinylanthracene polymerizations. The polymerization mechanism appears to be cationic in these monomer-solvent systems with ZnCl2.

Notizen: To elucidate mechanisms in electroinitiated polymerization reactions a comparison was conducted between ultraviolet (UV) photoinitiation and electroinitiation of N-vinyl phthalimide with zinc chloride as a catalyst. Both methods give low yields of a complex polymer product. A detailed analysis, infrared (IR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), elemental, and molecular weight, conducted on the polymeric products, indicated that phthalimide ring opening was occurring and that complex mixtures of poly(N-vinyl phthalimide) derivatives were formed. Both initiation methods gave comparable results, which further indicated mechanistic similarity between photo-and electroinitiation in these donor-acceptor charge transfer polymerizations.

Beschreibung: Described in detail is a laser induced fluorescence system which has been successfully interfaced with two aircraft sampling platforms (i.e., Sabreliner jet and an L-188C Electra). This system, which has been under development for four years, presently consists of the following major components: (1) a Nd-Yag laser driven oscillator-amplifier dye laser; (2) a sampling manifold with associated fluorescence detection optics; (3) an OH calibration chamber; (4) a laser beam steering assembly; and (5) sampling electronics and data processing hardware. During the last three years, this system has been flown some 50,000 air miles making tropospheric OH radical measurements over the latitude range of 70 N to 57 S. OH concentrations measured during these flights have ranged from 30 parts-per-quadrillion (3.7 x 10 to the 5th molecules/sq cm) at altitudes of 6 km to 0.8 parts-per-trillion (2.0 x 10 to the 7th molecules/sq cm) at 0.5 km. Computations have been completed which indicate that the existing aircraft system with modest modifications should also be capable of detecting natural tropospheric levels of NO, SO2, CH2O, NO2, HNO2, NO3, H2O2 and CS2 by using both conventional laser-induced fluorescence methodology and multiphoton techniques.

Beschreibung: The response of a tungsten-scintillator ionization spectrometer to accelerated particle beams has been investigated. Results obtained from exposure of the approx. 1000 g/sq cm apparatus to 5, 10, and 15 GeV/c electrons and pions as well as to 2.1 GeV/nucleon C-12 and O-16 ions are presented. These results include cascade-development curves, fractions of the primary energy measured by the spectrometer, and resolutions of the apparatus for measuring the primary energies. For 15 GeV/c electrons, an average of about 82% of the incident energy is measured by the apparatus with resolution (normal standard deviation) of about 6%. For 15 GeV/c pions, an average of about 65% of the incident energy is measured with resolution of about 18%. The energy resolution improves with increasing energy and with increasing depth of the spectrometer.

Notizen: Two kinds of errors are found in protein models made with the tool of Rubin and Richardson. Global errors result from the accumulation of many errors too small to localize, while local errors are assignable to particular bends in the model. We here locate the sources of local errors, and show how to minimize both kinds of errors.

Notizen: About one hundred samples of poly(1,3-cyclopentylenevinylene) (2) were prepared by ring-opening polymerization of norbornene using a variety of metathesis catalysts based mainly on WCl6 or MoCl5, with EtAlCl2, BuLi, Ph4Sn, and (CH2=CHCH2)4Sn as cocatalysts, and with methyl acrylate, diethyl maleate or diethyl fumarate as additives. Ir, Re, V, and Os compounds were also used as catalysts. The double bond pair sequences, trans-trans (tt), trans-cis (tc) etc. were determined from the 13C NMR spectra of these samples and the ratios rt(=tt/tc) and rc(=cc/ct) examined as a function of the fraction of double bonds σc having cis structure. For σc up to 0,35 all polymers showed random distribution of cis and trans structures (rtrc = 1), corresponding to a single type of propagating species. Polymers having σc = 0,35-0,85 invariably gave rtrc ≥ 1, with values greater than 5 in some cases. It is proposed that steric crowding of the active site leads both to high values of σc and to restriction of rotation about the metal-carbene bond of the propagating metalcarbene species, such as to give rise to kinetically distinct conformations which tend to regenerate their own kind on addition of monomer.

Notizen: Solvent barrier studies for fluorinated polyethylene have shown that the fluorinated surfaces reduce the rate of permeation for many solvents. The barrier property has been related to physical and chemical properties of the solvent. For instance, solvents having a dielectric constant between 7 and 10 were not retained as well as solvents with a dielectric constant less than 7.
