    Notes: Polyperfluorobut-2-yne is prepared by a fluoride ion-induced polymerization of hexafluorobut-2-yne. The mass spectrum indicates a regular fragmentation pattern but the ESCA spectrum establishes the structure as a polyene, rather than a crosslinked system, and the occurrence of a shake-up peak assists in this assignment.

    Description: The status of an investigation of four numerical techniques for the time-dependent compressible Navier-Stokes equations is presented. Results for free shear layer calculations in the Reynolds number range from 1000 to 81000 indicate that a sequential alternating-direction implicit (ADI) finite-difference procedure requires longer computing times to reach steady state than a low-storage hopscotch finite-difference procedure. A finite-element method with cubic approximating functions was found to require excessive computer storage and computation times. A fourth method, an alternating-direction cubic spline technique which is still being tested, is also described.

    Description: Extensive geological and geophysical surveys were carried out at the Marysville geothermal area during 1973 and 1974. The area has high heat flow (up to microcalories per square centimeter-second, a negative gravity anomaly, high electrical resistivity, low seismic ground noise, and nearby microseismic activity. Significant magnetic and infrared anomalies are not associated with the geothermal area. The geothermal anomaly occupies the axial portion of a dome in Precambrian sedimentary rocks intruded by Cretaceous and Cenozoic granitic rocks. The results from a 2.4-km-deep test well indicate that the cause of the geothermal anomaly is hydrothermal convection in a Cenozoic intrusive. A maximum temperature of 95 C was measured at a depth of 500 m in the test well.

    Description: Preliminary findings are presented and applications derived from ERTS-1 satellite imagery of the nearshore coastal processes of the California coast. The objectives were to analyze nearshore currents, sediment transport, and estuarine and river discharges along the California coast through the use of synoptic and repetitive imagery from ERTS as well as aircraft underflights and surface data. The major conclusions are: (1) Distinct seasonal patterns for sediment transport as a function of the oceanic current systems and coastal morphology have been identified. (2) Large scale sediment plumes from intermittent streams and rivers extend offshore to previously unanticipated ranges. (3) Computer generated contouring of radiance levels from computer-compatible tapes result in charts that can be used for determination of surface and nearsurface suspended sediment distribution. (4) Flying spot scanner enhancements result in details of nearshore features. (5) Data is providing significant information for coastal planning and construction projects.

    Description: Long-term periodic features in the meridional wind between 20 and 65 km attitude are analyzed. No appreciable periodic waves are found in the tropics. The quasi-biennial oscillation, annual wave, and four-month wave have maximum amplitudes of about 10, 20, and 10 m/s respectively in the arctic near 45 km. The phase of the annual wave changes by nearly 180 deg in a narrow zone near 45 deg N. The semiannual wave has an amplitude of 10 m/s near 50 deg N above 50 km with equinoctial phase dates in the region of maximum amplitude. The location of this polar semiannual wave corresponds closely to that previously found in the zonal wind.

    Description: The variability of stratospheric meridional winds is examined in both space and time. Height-latitude sections for January along 70 deg E and 90 deg W show a divergence zone above 50 km near 60 deg N and an intense convergence zone 40 km near 50 deg N over North America. This latter structure, with southward winds in the Arctic and northward winds at mid-latitudes over North America, persists from October through April. Tidal winds dominate all other circulation features in summer at all latitudes, and throughout the year at low latitudes. To help understand the observed patterns of variability, long-term periodic features are analyzed.     Description: The buffet prediction method uses rigid wind tunnel model fluctuating pressure data to form a buffet forcing function. The response is then calculated with a mathematical dynamic model of the airplane developed for gust response analysis. By including the extremes of phasing and contribution of symmetric and antisymmetric airplane responses, the upper and lower bounds are established for buffet response. F-111A flight test data show good agreement with predicted bounds for a variety of flight conditions.

    Notes: Earlier work showed that heating causes poly(diethylsiloxane) to undergo a first-order transition from a semicrystalline solid to a more mobile viscous - crystalline material. The latter is composed of two phases and analogies between polymer and liquid crystal morphology and behavior have been made. The viscous - crystalline phase in PDES appears to be unique since the literature is devoid of other documented examples. In this study, spin - lattice and spin - spin relaxation times were measured over a wide temperature range. They show a glass transition at 138°K, a crystal - crystal transition at 206°K, and a transition around 250°K which results from translational motion of the polymer chains with respect to each other. This motion is observed in the amorphous phase at a lower temperature than in the crystalline phase. Translational motion in the crystalline phase is observed on melting of the crystallites. The spin - spin data permitted monitoring of the molecular motions in each phase and the data suggest that these phases exert some influence on the molecular motions of each other. The viscous - crystalline phase in PDES may represent a unique model for studying and understanding “precrystalline” behavior and structure in amorphous solids.
