Notes: This paper describes the proper external potential formulation of a cathodic protection system employed for corrosion prevention of structures in infinite electrolytes. The boundary condition associated with the mathematical formulation is not of the standard type encountered in hydrodynamic, electrostatic or heat transfer applications. The developed mathematical model is discretized by the boundary element technique, which is then solved iteratively by the Newton-Raphson method.

Notes: Abstract Some apparatus and instrumentation have been developed for improving the relevance of dynamic test data obtained from human muscle specimens. In the first part of this paper the background is given and a special clamping and mounting arrangement is described which allows a small specimen to be made ready for test in less than a minute. The second part describes a new timing and sequencing instrument for regulating the electrical and mechanical stimulations applied to the specimen. The mechanical displacements are controlled by a type of servomechanism which can be driven from an f.m. tape recorder.

Notes: Abstract The first part of this paper (Fay et al., 1974) presented the background to the work and put forward a design for apparatus for clamping and stimulating a small muscle specimen in a controlled environment. The apparatus described included an electromagnetic actuator and both force and displacement transducers. This concluding part shows how the system is controlled and sequenced.

Notes: Using fast atom bombardment (FAB) ionization combined with tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), the identity of arsenobetaine (AB) in extracts of sole, haddock, lobster and shrimp was unequivocally confirmed. Evidence was also presented for the presence of arsenocholine (AC) in the shrimp extract. Confirmation was obtained by comparing the collision-induced dissociation (CID) daughter ion and parent ion spectra of major ions in the FAB spectra from these extracts with those from the authentic standards.

Notes: A series of radicals formed when a fast beam of deuterated ions, [DCO] +, [DOCO] +, [CD3OD2]+ and [(CD) 2COD] +, is neutralized by electron transfer from K. Na and Zn atoms has been studied by a combination of charge stripping and beam scattering techniques For all systems studied, some fraction of The radicals from charge exchange are formed in excited dissociative states. Radical decomposition products have been identified and fragmentation energies have been measured. A metastable slate of CD3GD2 is observed with a lifetime greater than 0.5 μs. Stable radicals of DCO and (CD3)2 COD are formed by ion-Zn charge exchange. Indirect evidence indicates that [DCO] +-K charge exchang; leads to an excited radiative state of the radical.

Notes: Proton NMR spectra are reported for 15N enriched borazine and a series of 15N enriched derivatives: N-methyl-borazine, N,N′-dimethylborazine and a new photochemical product, 1-methyl-2-aminoborazine. Chemical shifts for the ring (15N—H) protons have been measured. Using a Fourier transform spectrometer, fine structure in the 15N—H doublet is resolved. Ortho and meta ring proton and three-bond 15N to H coupling constants have been determined. Substituent effects on chemical shifts and coupling constants for borazine derivatives are compared with those for analogous benzene derivatives.

Notes: The use of Freon-113 as a reagent gas in the negative chemical ionization mass spectra of phenolic compounds is reported. The dominant mode of ionization is by chloride attachment producing [M + Cl]- ions. The application of this technique to the highly phenolic acid fractions from coal-derived liquids gives spectra containing essentially only [M + Cl]- peaks. This allows relative molecular mass profiles to be obtained. The resultant complex spectra are simplified by dividing them into their homologous series components. Since this is a low-resolution technique, absolute component identification cannot be made; but in conjunction with other analytical methods, tentative identification of series of molecules is possible. Thus, the alkyl-substituent ranges of the different homologous series can be assessed. Comparisons between coal-derived liquids produced under different reaction conditions are made, and composition differences detected.
