Notes: Abstract Ductile yielding of the Dugdale type and brittle fracture in the Barenblatt sense are investigated for regions at the ends of a periodic array of semi-infinite parallel cracks in a stretched orthotropic sheet. Direct transform methods are used to obtain the Wiener-Hopf equation. Factorization of the kernel and several other steps of the analysis can be completed in closed form for a dense class of elastic constants, and asymptotic forms are derived for other cases. The solutions depend upon the finite spacing between cracks and have characteristics which have been observed in experiments: 1) At high load levels the yield zone of the ductile material grows in jumps; 2) For a brittle material the allowable load level increases as the speciman size decreases.

Notes: Summary Tomato plants were cultured at various levels of rubidium and potassium in water culture. Growth as measured by dry-weight accumulation was reduced by the substitution of rubidium for potassium. The reduction in root growth was greater than the reduction in top growth; therefore, increased shoot/root values were noted with increasing rubidium concentration. In other experiments the potassium and rubidium content of the root and aerial portions were determined. It was found that rubidium tended to accumulate in the roots rather than the tops; it is postulated that this accumulation may be responsible for the observed inhibition of root growth. Potassium concentrations were similar in both the roots and tops indicating that the two cations did not behave similarly in these experiments.

Notes: Abstract The dominant complementary genes in the oat variety Bond conditioning resistance to crown rust were isolated by selection from appropriately segregating F3 lines in a cross between the susceptible variety Fulghum and Bond. Their presence and mode of action was confirmed by F2 analysis when certain bulk F4 lines produced in this manner were intercrossed and when one such line was crossed with Bond. The value of these lines in confirming the proposed genotypes of certain other resistant varieties, which have genes interacting with, or allelic with, one of the Bond factors and in fundamental studies on the nature of rust resistance is pointed out.

Notes: Summary Studies of chemical element accumulation in leaf tissue of corn have shown that the level of accumulation is under partial genetic control. Differences in the accumulation level of some elements have been shown to have some relationship to resistance to corn leaf blight (H. turcicum Pass.). One can infer from the large differences in level of accumulation of chemical elements in the F3 from selected F2 plants, that breeding efforts to select for low accumulating genotypes for some elements could serve as a mechanism of reducing the intake of radioactive elements in the food chain should the level of these elements become serious.

Notes: Abstract The reinforcement of metallic matrices with stronger, stiffer ceramic fibres is one approach which is currently being pursued in an effort to develop materials which will withstand the demanding conditions imposed by present-day engineering requirements. The gains in tensile strength which might be obtained by suitable combination of fibres and metal have been widely speculated upon [1] and, recently, experimental verification of some of these predictions has been obtained [2]. As yet, however, little attention has been directed towards assessing the limitations of such composite systems, isolating their causes and attempting to overcome them.
