Notes: Summary Solar irradiance is estimated on the basis of three hourly cloud observations and compared with the measured irradiance. This indicates that it is possible to predict daily global irradiation to within 15% and thus illustrates the potential for extending the solar energy data base available for heliotechnology in Western Australia.

Notes: Abstract Impedance measurements have been made on Li/SO2(C) cells containing an acetonitrile-based electrolyte in a range of states from newly assembled to completely discharged. The cell behaviour can be explained if it is assumed that the lithium is an irreversible electrode and that the SO2 electrode is reversible. The nominal exchange current density on the lithium is 0.7 mA cm−2 andα ≃ 0.37 for the cell Li/LiBr(2.35 mol dm−3), CH3CN, S2O 4 2− ¦SO2(6.25 mol dm−3)C

Notes: Abstract We present a unified derivation of affine invariant convergence results for Newton's method. Initially we derive affine invariant forms of the perturbation lemma and a mean value theorem. With their aid we obtain an optimal radius of convergence for Newton's method, from which further radius of convergence estimates follow. From the Newton-Kantorovitch theorem we derive other estimates of the radius of convergence. We discuss estimation of the parameters in the expressions we have derived.

Notes: Abstract The use of the continuation principle in the solution of systems of nonlinear equations frequently leads to the need to follow trajectories through turning points. This can be done by using a different parametrization at every step along the trajectory. We show how to construct accurate predictors and adaptive steplength estimators for use in predictor-corrector algorithms which follow trajectories in this way.

Notes: Abstract We present the detailed reaction network used in Paper I of this series and discuss the sensitivity of the calculated abundances of sulphur-bearing species to various parameters including reaction efficiency and elemental depletions. It is shown that while ion-grain reactions can provide appreciable abundances of many S-bearing species, they do not contribute significantly to the abundance of O-bearing molecules. Observations of HDS in interstellar clouds could provide important information on the formation of H2S.

Notes: Conclusions Genes may be relevant not only to predisposition but also to the type of schizophrenic illness which occur, and determine whether symptoms of the type I or type II syndromes or a combination of the two are the major manifestations. Both syndromes, howerver, might be caused by a single agent, e.g.a. virus. Thus, amongst the population of patients at risk there is a group who experience a primary neurochemical disturbance (e.g. of dopaminergic transmission). This becomes manifest in positive symptoms (delusions, hallucinations and thought disorder) and might result from an affinity of the virus for a particular neurochemical structure (e.g. the D2 dopamine receptor or a molecule concerned in its regulation). Within this population however, is a sub-group that is predisposed to a more malignant and widespread disease. In these patients the virus gains further footholds in the nervous system, with the consequence that the disease acquires the characteristics of a chronic encephalitis. It is in these cases that there is evidence of structural change (although the site of the presumed cell loss has yet to be determined) and when present this change is associated with intellectual impairment and negative symptoms (the type II syndrome). Thus the disturbance underlying the type I syndrome is a neurochemical one which accounts for the reversibility of some schizophrenic symptoms and illnesses, and their response to neuroleptic drugs. It is compatible with Bleuler's view of schizophrenia as a functional psychosis which can be clearly distinguished from dementia. The change underlying the type II syndrome is progressive and irreversible and accounts for poor long-term outcome. To this form of illness Kraepelin's term dementia praecox can be applied with the term dementia retaining its contemporary connotation of organic psychosis.

Notes: Summary Speliphron violaceum deposits its larva and a few paralysed spiders inside the holes of electrical sockets. The larva feeds on the spiders, completes development in 6 days and emerges after 18 days of pupation. When provided with spiders to the maximum capacity of the hole, a larva consumed 1.746 KJ and converted 1.360 KJ. Restriction of the quantity of spiders provided, resulted in decreased consumption and extension of larval duration to 7 or 8 days. Consumption of 0.710·718 KJ was the minimum requirement for the completion of larval development. Despite variations in food consumption, assimilation efficiency of the larva remained constant around 97%. Gross production efficiency of the larvae averaged 77%. Larvae ingesting different amounts of host energy emerged with a wide range of body weight (16–62 mg). The efficiency with which pupal energy is transferred to adult was around 30%. Dry weight of meconium egested by the test individuals varied from 1.3 to 4.6 mg. Using simple regression equations, it is possible to predict the bioenergetics components of S. violaceum from the dry weight of meconium.

Notes: Abstract Coupled-wave equations are derived, which describe, in the geometrical-optics limit, the interaction between two beams in a medium having intensity dependent permittivity. These equations are interpreted physically and a solution is presented for the special case of non-uniform plane waves. New results on energy exchange and beam profile distortion are obtained and are contrasted with known results for static grating.

Notes: Summary Total body calcium (an index of skeletal mass), ulnar bone density, and total body potassium (lean body mass) were followed for up to 5 years in 38 patients with Paget's disease during treatment with synthetic human calcitonin. Calcium was measured by neutron activation, ulnar density by X-ray photodensitometry, and potassium by counting its natural40K radioactivity. There was a significant rise in total skeletal mass in a group of 8 patients in the 12 months following the start of therapy, but overall, total bone mass and ulnar density remained constant during treatment. Small mean losses of body potassium were observed (∼4%) after several years elapsed on treatment. Over an average period of 12 months after discontinuation of therapy in 21 patients there was no significant mean change in calcium or potassium. The means of the ratios of total body calcium divided by predicted normal calcium (over the whole period of measurement) were 1.08 (males) and 0.99 (females) and were not significantly different. Comparison of the ulnar densities of patients and normal subjects gave similar results. The average ratio of measured to predicted normal potassium was 1.13 (both males and females). Thus there was no indication of depletion in skeletal mass below normal either in the untreated disease or resulting from treatment.
