    Description / Table of Contents: The constant evolution of the calculation capacity of the modern computers implies in a permanent effort to adjust the existing numerical codes, or to create new codes following new points of view, aiming to adequately simulate fluid flows and the related transport of physical properties. Additionally, the continuous improving of laboratory devices and equipment, which allow to record and measure fluid flows with a higher degree of details, induces to elaborate specific experiments, in order to shed light in unsolved aspects of the phenomena related to these flows. This volume presents conclusions about different aspects of calculated and observed flows, discussing the tools used in the analyses. It contains eighteen chapters, organized in four sections: 1) Smoothed Spheres, 2) Models and Codes in Fluid Dynamics, 3) Complex Hydraulic Engineering Applications, 4) Hydrodynamics and Heat/Mass Transfer. The chapters present results directed to the optimization of the methods and tools of Hydrodynamics.

    Description: In this study we compare the response of four state-of-the-art Earth system models to climate engineering under scenario G1 of two model intercomparison projects: GeoMIP (Geoengineering Model Intercomparison Project) and IMPLICC (EU project "Implications and risks of engineering solar radiation to limit climate change"). In G1, the radiative forcing from an instantaneous quadrupling of the CO 2 concentration, starting from the preindustrial level, is balanced by a reduction of the solar constant. Model responses to the two counteracting forcings in G1 are compared to the preindustrial climate in terms of global means and regional patterns and their robustness. While the global mean surface air temperature in G1 remains almost unchanged compared to the control simulation, the meridional temperature gradient is reduced in all models. Another robust response is the global reduction of precipitation with strong effects in particular over North and South America and northern Eurasia. In comparison to the climate response to a quadrupling of CO 2 alone, the temperature responses are small in experiment G1. Precipitation responses are, however, in many regions of comparable magnitude but globally of opposite sign.

    Description: The first major differentiation in primitive planetesimals is the formation of metal- or metal-sulfide cores. To constrain the time of asteroidal differentiation, meteoritic metals and silicates coexisting with metals were analyzed for Wisotopes and Hf and W concentrations. The study focused on silicate inclusions in non-magmatic IAB iron meteorites and the corresponding metal phases as well as on winonaites and acapulcoites were analyzed. IAB iron meteorites formed by crystallization of metal ponds under low pressure conditions at or near the surface of their asteroidal parent body. The presence of abundant silicate inclusions reflects either incomplete metal-silicate separation or mixing of metal and silicates by impacts. Hafnium-W measurements were performed on magnetic and non-magnetic separates from seven IAB iron meteorites to constrain the exact timing of metal separation, silicate differentiation and metamorphism.     Description: Several projects initiated and coordinated by the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam ‐ GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences focus on shale gas and may serve as entry points for the understanding of general features for efficient shale-gas production, not only in Europe. The integrated research on European shale gas started by launching the prominent Gas Shales in Europe project (GASH) in 2009 and slightly earlier in 2008 the GeoEnergie project (GeoEn). The Herald Tribune declared in August 2008 “Europe starting search for shale gas”. New on the agenda is the ESOP initiative (European Sustainable Operating Practices) which addresses environmental concerns.

    Description: The driving force of complex biogeochemical reactions in sedimentary environments during early diagenesis is the irreversible redox-conversion of organic matter. Our modeling approach incorporates interdependent diagenetic reactions evolving into a diffusive multi-component and multi-phase system by means of thermodynamic equilibrium calculations of species distribution. The modeling tool is the PHREEQC (version 2) computer code. Reaction kinetics of organic carbon conversion are integrated into the set of equilibrium reactions by defining the type and amount of converted organic matter at a certain time step. The model has been applied so far in different environmental settings: the gas hydrate dominated sediments of Hydrate Ridge (ODP Leg 204), the high accumulation area of the Amazon Fan, and the upwelling area off Peru.
