    Notes: An anion exchange method was employed to determine phytate content of industrial crude and degummed soybean oil and soybean oil purchased at retail. The phytate content of crude oil ranged from 48.9–339.4 ppm and degummed oil ranged from 3.9–50.9 ppm phytate. Degumming removed from 16.1–97.1% of the phytate. Retail oil did not contain detectable amounts of phytate. Peroxide values were measured to test the effect of added phytate on the stability of oil exposed to heat, light and copper. In these tests phytate did not affect oil stability.

    Notes: Summary Managanese deficiency (〈 18 μg g−1 Mn) resulted in decreased levels of phenols in wheat shoots and decreased levels of lignins in both roots and shoots. These observed reductions in phenol contents was due largely to a decrease in the alkaline labile phenol component. Levels of nitrate supplied in solution influenced both phenol and lignin production; high nitrate levels (15 mM) resulted in a reduction in phenol and lignin in the shoot but stimulated lignin production in root tissue.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Les fourmis importées,Solenopsis invicta Buren sont des prédateurs efficaces du charançon du coton,Anthonomus grandis Boheman dans les champs de coton de l'est du Texas. Les charançons n'ont pas causé de dommages économiques en 11 ans à cause de la mortalité attribuée essentiellement à l'action des fourmis. La suppression de celles-ci a provoqué une augmentation des dégâts dus au charançon. Les insecticides employés contre les ravageurs du coton réduisent beaucoup l'abondance des fourmis. Pour préserver cette efficace prédation des charançons par les fourmis, il convient de supprimer les applications d'insecticides qui ne sont pas nécessaires.
    Notes: Abstract Red imported fire ants,Solenopsis invicta Buren, are effective predators of the boll weevil,Anthonomus grandis Boheman, in east Texas cotton fields. Boll weevils caused no economic loss in 11 years due to mortality attributed primarily to ants. Removal of the ants resulted in an increase in crop damage by the boll weevil. Insecticides used for cotton pests greatly reduce the abundance of the ants. To capitalize on this effective predation of boll weevils by ants, unnecessary applications of insecticides should be eliminated.

    Notes: Permanent pastures on acid soils in the northeastern USA produce far below their potential due to lack of legumes in the swards. This experiment was done to study the effects of lime-pelleted white clover seed and fertilizer combinations (B, Cu, K, Mg, Mo, P, S and Zn) on clover nodulation and growth in four acid (pH 4.3–4.9), Vermont permanent-pasture soils in the greenhouse. Potassium was applied in all treatments. Lime pelleting and Mg and P fertilization increased both proportion of plants nodulated and seedling weight. Lime pelleting resulted in the largest increase in nodulation but P application produced the greatest gain in seedling weight. Molybdenum interacted with P to enhance seedling nodulation more than either element applied alone. Phosphorus also interacted with Mg to increase seedling weight more than either one applied alone. Sulphur had no influence on seedling nodulation or yield. Applications of B, Cu and Zn depressed nodulation and yield, possibly because excessively high levels were applied. Using lime-pelleted seed and a fertilizer combination of K. Mg. Mo and P could improve white clover establishment and growth on permanent-pasture soils in the northeast.

    Notes: A Phytophthora species isolated from blighted potato foliage was identified as P. drechsleri, mating type A2. The isolate was found to be weakly pathogenic on a range of hosts. Pairings in vitro of P. drechsleri with British isolates of P. infestans mating type A1 when separated by a polycarbonate membrane resulted in selfed oospores of both species. The possibility that A1 P. infestans is induced to self in the field and the genetic consequences of such selfing are discussed.

    Notes: Marked hatchery-reared smolts were released into the River Bush on the 1 May and 19 May 1980. and the time for their descent to trapping facilities was monitored. Of the smolts recaptured in each experiment 56.2% and 75.8% respectively descended the 3.5 km to the traps within 48 h, and the overall patterns of their downstream movements were found to be correlated to that of wild smolts. Smolts migrating from control tanks did so more slowly than those released into the river, and were not correlated with the movements of wild smolts.The feeding of recaptured hatchery smolts was compared with that of wild smolts for up to 11 days after the start of each experiment. It was found that most invertebrate groupings were not consumed at significantly different levels in the two groups, and that hatchery-reared fish began feeding on invertebrate food within 9 hours of release.

    Notes: Paired halves of 32 lamb carcasses were either electrically stimulated (ES) or not (NES), then assigned to one of the following treatments: (1) hot-boned, cooked prerigor, frozen and reheated (HEPRC); (2) conventionally chilled and boned, cooked, frozen and reheated (CB-ARC); (3) hot-boned, frozen and cooked (HB); and (4) cold- boned, frozen and cooked (CB). Electrical stimulation lowered (P 〈 0.05) peak force (PF) of chops from CB-ARC, HB and CB treatments. Nonstimulated HB-PRC chops had a lower (P 〈 0.05) PF than ES, HB-PRC chops. Lower (P 〈 0.05) compression values were noted for HEPRC and CB-ARC chops than for HB and CB chops. Electrical stimulation reduced (P 〈 0.05) PF regardless of cooking method. Chops cooked in the microwave had lower (P 〈 0.05) work values than chops cooked in the convection oven.
